Acorn and Cambridge Regional College Run Multimedia Workshop for Unemployed
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Acorn Computers, the market leader in RISC-based personal computers and the
biggest IT supplier to UK schools, is teaming up with Cambridge Regional
College to run a multimedia training course specifically designed to equip
longer term unemployed adults with up-to-the-minute technology skills that
will assist them in their quest to return to work.
The initiative, which is being financed with European funding, takes place
over two weekends during March at Acorn's Training Centre in Newmarket Road,
Cambridge. Up to 10 participants, specially selected by Cambridge Regional
College, will attend an initial two day session on 5/6th March to learn
about the concepts and techniques involved in developing multimedia
applications. Three weeks later, having prepared a design project, the same
group will reconvene to spend the second weekend developing their own
example multimedia applications.
Multimedia is the term used commonly in the computer world to describe the
combination of graphics, sound, video, animation and text in one
application. Once created, multimedia applications can be used,
interactively if desired, by others as a training tool, information source
or presentation device. As well as developing an understanding of multimedia
and its increasing potential, participants will also be able to brush up on
other skills such as the use of IT, graphic design, training, presentation
and organisational abilities.
Acorn's Training Manager, Garry Neale, commented: "Acorn has an excellent
reputation for developing leading-edge technology solutions and our
computers offer the level of performance required to produce effective
multimedia applications. Over the last 12 months, interest in the use of
multimedia has rocketed. Although this particular course was designed as a
one-off initiative for unemployed adults, we are now planning to run similar
workshops for businesses and individuals, and anyone interested should
contact us at the Acorn Training Centre on Cambridge 254386."
Mike Platten, Enterprise and Training Schemes Manager for the College, said:
"As a major provider of training in Cambridge, we're delighted to be joining
forces with Acorn, leaders in the IT field. We hope the relationship
develops further. This programme is full already and we hope to run it again
in the future. Anyone who is interested in attending should telephone John
Jullien on Cambridge 881636."
Founded in 1978, with 1992 revenues of #48.2m, Acorn Computers is the
premier supplier of IT solutions to UK education and has been the leading
provider of 32-bit RISC based personal computers since 1987. In 1990, Acorn
established an associate company, Advanced RISC Machines (ARM), in a joint
venture with Apple Computer and VLSI Technology Inc to develop and exploit
further Acorn's RISC processor technology. Acorn works closely with a strong
community of industry partners, users and software developers to provide
innovative technology solutions for the education, consumer, publishing and
international markets. Acorn Computers Limited is part of the Acorn Computer
Group plc, which went public on the USM is 1983.
