Help for !!FastDesk
===================
!!FastDesk speeds up mounting of a disc by 'cacheing'
the icons and booting information in two large files
instead of the usual many little files. These two files
can then be loaded a lot faster than many small ones.
e.g. with 'App1', mounting now takes 5s instead of 9s.
To install !!FastDesk, copy the !!FastDesk application
onto the disc (or into the directory) you want it on,
rename it (see below), and then run it (by double-
clicking it's icon).
You will be asked for each application on the disc in
turn if you want to process (include) that application's
files in the !!FastDesk files. Hit 'Y', or click Select
to add applications. After that, the disc should be
mounted faster.
It is preferable that you rename the application when
you copy it elsewhere, as it only 'works' the first time
it is 'seen'. As a general convention, rename it to
the name of the disc or directory you put it in, e.g.
If in the root of disc 'App1', rename to !!App1
If in a directory 'SmallApp', rename to !!SmallApp
Note that it is necessary to precede the name with the
'!!', so that it is the first application the filer
'sees', or it will be ineffective.
If you add more applications to the disc later, then
just re-run !!FastDesk to update it.
NOTES: To make it work in several places properly:
Rename the application (by clicking Menu over
it's icon, and choosing
'App FastDesk ⇨ Rename'
from the menu that appears. You can change
it's name to anything you like, just so long
as you leave the '!!' at the start of the name
(It MUST be the first application the filer
'sees' when you open the directory or mount
the disc !!FastDesk is on)
Applications that run files or do anything
'nasty' in their !Boot files may cause errors
when mounting (e.g. Attempting to load a file
causes problems, as the !boot code is now in the
!!FastDesk application directory, NOT where it
THINKS it is!)- If this occurs, re-run !!FastDesk,
and click Adjust or hit 'N' when asked if you
want to include the offending application's boot
information- This means that mounting will be
slightly slower (though still faster than before).
!!FastDesk now fakes the 'Obey$Dir' variable, so
it is unlikely that any applications will cause
you trouble.
To make life easier when examining the !!FastDesk
!Boot file, each application's !Boot code is
preceded by "Application xxxx's !Boot follows:"
-Thus, each application's !Boot code can be easily
found, and any offending code can be swiftly dealt
with.
When compiling the !Boot files from other
applications, !!FastDesk will replace <Obey$Dir>
with the full pathname of the application's
directory.
