  23. Welcome to ArcWeb</h1>

  25. <strong>ArcWeb</strong> is a World Wide Web browser for Acorn RISC OS
  26. computers. It is a constantly evolving piece of software, which is updated
  27. fairly frequently.  If you want to be informed about the release of new
  28. versions, then there is a <a href="maillist">mailing list</a> to which you
  29. can subscribe in order to receive announcements via e-mail.  There is a page
  30. listing <a href="What'sNew">what's new in recent versions</a>, including new
  31. features such as <a href="interedit">Interactive Editing</a> and <a
  32. href="ftpupload">FTP uploads</a>.

  34. If you come across a problem with your version, please check
  35. first whether you are using the latest version or not.  You can do this by
  36. checking the <a href="http://ftp.dsse.ecs.soton.ac.uk:8080/ftp/ArcWeb/">primary
  37. FTP site</a> at my lab at the <a href="http://www.soton.ac.uk/">University of
  38. Southampton</a>.  If you need to send me a bug report then
  39. please first read the <a href="bugreports">bug report instructions</a> as
  40. this will tell you how you can enable me to find your problem much faster.

  44. <h2 align=center>Beginner's Guide to the Web</h2>

  46. This is a <a href="index">hypertext</a> link to the manual index page.  Under
  47. a default desktop palette, the text is black and the hypertext is blue.  This
  48. can be changed by choosing the <em>Colours ...</em> item on the Options menu.
  49. You will notice a much higher quality of rendition if you use a screen mode
  50. with 256 or more colours, since the anti- aliasing provided by the RISC OS
  51. Font Manager is able to do a much better job with more colours available. If
  52. you are using RISC OS 3.70 and switch on the background font blending, then
  53. you will notice an extremely high quality rendering against background images
  54. as the Font Manager's dynamic anti-aliasing comes into action.  NOTE: If you
  55. enable this and you have Virtualise® running, you must NOT make the Dynamic
  56. Area called "Inverse Table" virtual, unless you want everything to
  57. be unreadable.

  61. ArcWeb provides facilities for browsing documents on your own local system
  62. and over the Internet.  ArcWeb can be used for viewing resources whose URLs
  63. start with local, http, <a href="ftpinst">FTP</a>, news, nntp, mailto, telnet,
  64. finger, gopher and
  65. WAIS with Acorn TCP/IP or FreeNet.  All but the last is supported natively,
  66. as WAIS requires a <a href="proxy">proxy</a> such as that found at
  67. wwwcache.ja.net or www-cache.demon.co.uk.  <em>telnet</em> requires
  68. either <a href="http://www.xargle.demon.co.uk/2020/freeterm.html"><img border=0 alt=FreeTerm align=top src="#!freeterm"></a> or Acorn's <img
  69. align=top alt="!VT220" src="#!vt220"> or  to be loaded and running.

  89. Sometimes it is difficult to find the information that you are looking for on
  90. the web.  This is where <em>search engines</em> help.  When you connect to the
  91. search engine, it allows you to enter a keyword and it will return a list of
  92. sites which <em>may</em> be contain relevant information.  There are several
  93. around, but some of the most well known are linked to from this page.  Many
  94. even carry links to other search engines!

  107. If you need to search UseNet news, then there are two major sites
  108. which support this: <ul><li><strong>
  109. <a href="http://www.dejanews.com/">DejaNews</a></strong>.  This is an extremely
  110. powerful search engine and very useful for looking up subjects that
  111. have been discussed in a particlar newsgroup (or set of groups) in the
  112. past.<li><strong><a href="http://www.altavista.digital.com/">Alta Vista</a>
  113. </strong> is the other one, hosted by Digital Equipment Corporation, and can
  114. search either UseNet or the Web.  This also has a <a href="http://www.altavista.telia.com/">
  115. European mirror site</a> which may be quicker for European users to access.
