- Games tried 'n' tested
- Document d05/05 AjC
- =============================================================================
-
- This document details all games tested with Desktop Hacker by its author,
- and any unusual bits of games which can cause confusion when hacking. Most
- are not problems with Desktop Hacker as such, but you should be aware of
- them. If you find a game that won't hack or produces unexpected results, and
- it isn't documented here, please send a report to DoggySoft.
-
- * 2067BC. OK
- * Aggressor. OK
- * Aldebaran. OK
- * Arcade Soccer. OK
- * Asylum. OK
- * Axis.
- This game has stupid protection on to stop you from using games hackers.
- You can always use the cheat module.
- * Battle Chess. OK
- * Black Angel. OK
- * Blood Sport. OK
- * Blitz. OK
- * Blowpipe. OK
- * Bug Hunter. OK
- * Bug Hunter in Space. OK
- * Caverns. OK
- * Chuck Rock. OK
- * The Crystal Maze. OK
- * Cycloids.
- The original Software 42 release hacks OK. It had protection on, but a
- recent fix to Desktop Hacker has (accidentally) got round this. The Games-
- Ware re-release has not been tested, but has a new protection system on.
- It might work.
- * The Dungeon. OK
- * Demon's Lair. OK
- * Diggers.
- Reports suggest you should only interrupt whilst in the actual game-playing
- bit, else the desktop goes funny and unusable.
- * Dragon Ball. OK
- * Elite. OK
- * Fervour. OK
- Remember the game only starts when you run the levels directory at the
- start - so drag that, not the !Fervour application, to Desktop Hacker.
- * Firebolt. OK
- * Flashback. OK
- * FRED.
- See Cycloids.
- * Galactic Dan. OK
- * GODS. OK
- * Greivous Bodily 'Arm. OK
- * Gribbly's Day Out. OK
- VIDC poking produces odd-looking screens on returning
- * Guile. OK
- * Hamsters. OK
- * Haunted House. OK
- * Heimdall. OK
- * Lemmings 2.
- Hacks perfectly outside the main game screen. Otherwise hacks OK, but
- during interrupt, the keyboard is disabled, and the hard disc won't work.
- You can get round this by typing any numbers (into the search window, for
- example), at aonther screen, then interrupting and performing the search.
- Other strange things happen to the time whilst interrupting - buttons don't
- slab in, and Desktop Hacker's auto-scrolling scroll bars eat the pointer.
- Take care with this game. It does lots of horrid things.
- * Mad Professor Mariarti. OK
- * Magnetoids.
- The demo hacks fine; the full version does not. I have no idea why this is,
- and I'm looking into it.
- * Magic Pockets. OK
- * Moon Dash. OK
- * Nebulus. OK
- * Paradroid 2000. OK
- * Phaethon. OK
- * Populous. OK
- * Premier Manager. OK
- * Quark.
- Doesn't work. I'm not sure quite why, but it has always caused problems
- with other hacking tools too, and it won't work on the Risc PC...
- * RedShift. OK
- Hacks fine, but sets the mouse multipliers to 0 so that the mouse pointer
- will not move (in fact the ship graphic is the mouse pointer!) and you
- can't operate the desktop. To replace the mouse multipliers, press F12,
- *Basic, and enter "MOUSE STEP 3" and "QUIT".
- * Repton 2.
- Doesn't work. Apparently.
- * Sensible Soccer. OK
- See Zool. However, Renegade have obviously noticed that the ScreenBlanker
- can lose the colours, and have helpfully provided a key to redraw the
- colours, which you can use after Desktop Hacker. It's Space.
- * Stunt Racer 2000.
- Doesn't work - crashes when you run it. Don't know why, and I can't test it
- at the moment as it won't work on the Risc PC either. But I expect it's
- something to do with the disc protection.
- * Spheres of Chaos. OK
- * Sim City. OK
- * Small. OK
- This game's memory set-up sequence complains if it can't shrink the font
- cache to 0K, even if it doesn't need the memory. So when running it, you
- must make sure nobody is using outline fonts at all. Desktop Hacker must
- be configured to use the system font instead of outline fonts (the Choices
- window), and no other tasks should be loaded. If you can, poke the memory
- set-up utility so that it doesn't mess around with the memory, to avoid
- these problems.
- * Super Pool. OK
- * Speedball 2. OK
- * Styx. OK
- * Swiv. OK?
- According to Berty this DOES hack fine, unless you alter the RAM disc
- whilst hacking, when it crashes on returning. Reason unknown. I haven't
- tested this (I can't now), but I'd be surprised if Desktop Hacker could
- hack it at all, what with all its funny interrupts.
- * Terramex. OK
- * Tertis.
- Doesn't work, apparently.
- * The Time Machine. OK
- * Top Banana. OK
- * Tower of Babel. OK
- * Twin World. OK
- * Xenon 2. OK
- * Zool. OK
- Hacks fine, but on returning the screen will be all black, so you can't see
- what's happening (the same happens if the ScreenBlanker cuts in). You will
- either have to get killed or find a bonus that makes the screen flash to
- restore the colours. Or use the ZoolPatch raster bars program.
