  6.     DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SIBELIUS 6, SIBELIUS 7 STUDENT & SIBELIUS 7

  8. Sibelius Software now sells three different music processors, called
  9. Sibelius 6, Sibelius 7 Student and Sibelius 7.
  10.  
  11. Sibelius 7 is the full professional version.
  12.  
  13. Sibelius 7 Student is a slightly cut-down version suitable for about A-level
  14. standard. (We used to have an amateur/educational discount for Sibelius 7;
  15. Sibelius 7 Student replaces this, and is available to anyone - not just
  16. students.)

  18. Sibelius 6 is a further cut-down version for home use and up to about GCSE
  19. standard.

  25. Sibelius 7's additional features are mostly of interest to professional
  26. composers, arrangers and publishers. For simplicity we don't give a full
  27. table or list here. If you are specifically interested in getting Sibelius 7

  33. ------INSTRUMENTS

  35. On Sibelius 6 you can't define your own instruments or modify the name,
  36. transposition etc. of existing ones. This means that you can't (say) put the
  37. name of a person against their stave in a musical, or create unusual
  38. instruments.

  40. Sibelius 7 and 7 Student instead let you define your own instruments and
  41. modify the name etc. of the predefined ones.

  43. Sibelius 7 and 7 Student also provide automatic numbering of players for
  44. orchestral scores, so you can write (say) three trumpets on one or two
  45. staves.

  47. Sibelius 7 and 7 Student let you extract several instruments into a
  48. single part - e.g. for making a piano-vocal score - whereas Sibelius 6 can
  49. only extract one at a time. Sibelius 7 and 7 Student also let you use small
  50. notes for cues in parts.

  53. ------BIG SCORES

  55. Sibelius 6 allows up to 16 instruments with 1 or 2 staves each. This is
  56. fine for a lot of music, but probably not for largish groups such as brass
  57. bands or orchestras.

  59. Sibelius 7 Student allows 24 instruments, with up 3 staves per instrument
  60. (e.g. for piano or organ), and has extra facilities for doing larger scores,
  61. such as rehearsal marks beyond 'Z'.

  63. Sibelius 7 can handle up to 128 instruments each with up to 128 staves, 
  64.  
  65. Sibelius 6 and Sibelius 7 Student are limited to 512 bars of music, whereas
  66. Sibelius 7 has no limit.

  69. ------PRINTING AND STYLE

  71. Sibelius 7 and 7 Student can use any page size up to 999x999mm, with any
  72. stave size up to 20mm. Sibelius 6 is restricted to A4 only, with a choice of
  73. 5 stave sizes.

  75. Sibelius 7 and 7 Student have a complete menu of 'house style' options for
  76. specifying variations in marking designs, slur shapes, spacings etc.
  77. Sibelius 6 lacks this menu.

  79. Sibelius 7 (only) can use crop marks, can print scaled (e.g. for miniature
  80. scores), and will export EPS files for transferring pages to document
  81. processors on other computers.

  86. Sibelius 7 and 7 Student have fully editable text styles; those in Sibelius
  87. 6 are largely fixed.

  89. Sibelius 7 and 7 Student have about 200 miscellaneous symbols ('transfers');
  90. Sibelius 6 has 42. There are many other extra bits of notation, particularly
  91. for modern and early music.
