  9. This version of !Pennies (!Farthing) is compressed and needs to be
  10. decompressed to run correctly. It is set up to run with a set of
  11. demonstration data initially, it can also be used to create and store
  12. your own data by following the instructions in the 'New' directory.
  13.  
  14. TO DECOMPRESS/RUN
  15.  
  16. HARD DISC owners: Run ArcFS and drag !Farthing, Examples, Guide and
  17. New into one directory on your hard disc. To run the demo double click
  18. on !Farthing and follow the instructions in the Guide text.

  20. SINGLE FLOPPY owners: Run ArcFS and then create a RAM disc of 800k.
  21. Drag !Farthing to this RAM disc.
  22.  
  23. If you have a 2Mb machine then you may run the demo merely by then
  24. double clicking on the !Farthing icon in your RAM disc - this will run
  25. the demo using the RAM disc as if it were a floppy disc. The Guide
  26. text should be loaded directly from the original disc to take you
  27. through the demo. If you intend to use the program further it should
  28. be copied as described below.

  30. If you have a 1Mb machine or for permanent use first copy !Farthing
  31. from the RAM disc to another floppy then copy Examples, Guide and New
  32. to another floppy. To run the demo first load the Guide text and then
  33. Double click on !Farthing

  38. !FARTHING 
  39.  
  40. This version of !Pennies is a cut down version of the full application
  41. but any data created within it is entirely compatible with the full
  42. application. However, there are a number of facilities such as PRINT
  43. missing from this version together with some restrictive limits on the
  44. amount of new data that it will accept, these limitations are
  45. explained fully in the 'Technotes' help text (from !Pennies icon bar
  46. menu).

  49. GUIDE AND HELP
  50.  
  51. The Guide text will take you through a tour of !Pennies and describe
  52. how to start your own accounts. The full version of !Pennies is
  53. provided with a manual and set of 2 tutorials which provide a more
  54. complete guide to the application. Both versions include full on line
  55. help in the form of help texts available from within each window and
  56. support for Acorn's Help application. To start the tour double click
  57. over Guide to load the text and then follow the instructions.

  59. YOUR OWN ACCOUNTS
  60.  
  61. To run this version of !Pennies with your own data you will need to
  62. replace the demonstration data with a new set. To do this open the
  63. 'New' directory on the original disc and follow the instructions
  64. provided there. In the full version you can simply create and run as
  65. many sets of data as you wish, this version has been configured
  66. differently to allow it to fit onto one 800k floppy and it is thus not
  67. quite as versatile as the full version.

  72. !Farthing will happily load and run from the compressed state if you
  73. double click on it's icon on the original disc, however because it
  74. cannot then write to it's internal data store (because you have the
  75. Read Only version of ArcFS) it will then hang and you may not be able
  76. to quit satisfactorily. CTRL-Break/Reset/On-Off may then be needed to
  77. restore your machine. This will not damage the program in any way but
  78. it is very annoying so please decompress !Farthing by copying it
  79. before using it for your own data.
