  3. The Story So Far...

  5. After years of letting P.D. authors get on with
  6. the task of killing viruses, Acorn finally
  7. released their own virus killer in January 1992.
  8. At first everyone thought how kind and generous
  9. Acorn were to bring out such a versitile virus
  10. killer an distribute it to the public for no
  11. charge, but by the summer messages started
  12. appearing telling users that 'This version is too
  13. old.  Please update it.  Contact Pineapple
  14. Software, UK, 081 599 1476'.  Whether or not there
  15. were any new viruses about, Acorn/Pineapple wanted
  16. to make sure they got their hands on the public's
  17. money as soon as possible.  To this end, they had
  18. placed an instruction at the begining of their
  19. (ABC compiled) !RunImage file which checked the
  20. computer's internal clock, and refused to continue
  21. unless it considered itself up to date.  Getting
  22. an 'up to date' version, of course, would cost you
  23. plenty of money.

  25. What the applications do:
  26.  
  27. !ClockBack and !ClockNorm override the automatic
  28. date checking by simply changing the date on the
  29. internal clock.  !ClockBack takes it back 10
  30. years, and !ClockNorm brings it forwards again.
  31. Unlike some viruses, !Killer does not use an
  32. internal counter of it's own, so is extreemly easy
  33. to fool.  Maybe what the applications do is not
  34. entirely honest, but nobody can take you to court
  35. for changing your internal clock!

  38. freely copied provided that they are not sold for
  39. profit and are not modified in any way.  No single
  40. file or part of file should be copied without the
  41. rest of the application from which it came.
