- Utility Disc 2
- --------------
- © Data Store 1990
-
- Welcome to our second Utility Disc. This file
- contains some general information to get you
- started, and details of facilities that are common
- to more than one of our applications.
-
- Acknowledgements and Copyright Messages
- ---------------------------------------
- Programs on this disc have been written by
- Jonathan Durrant, Steve Sims (Dreamsoft) and David
- Coronel for The Data Store, and all are copyright.
- This means that you should not copy them and
- distrubute them to other people. We are however
- making one exception to this, which is the program
- you are using now. This is called !Manual, and can
- also be found within all the applications supplied
- on this disc. If you wish to use !Manual within
- any software you write yourself, please feel free
- to do so, and you can make as many copies of it
- for distribution as you like. Instructions on its
- use can be found by reading its own on-line
- manual, and details on how to do that (if you have
- not already worked it out!) can be found later on
- in this document. We do make two stipulations if
- you want to use !Manual in your own software:
- firstly that you do not alter the code of the
- program, but just include your own textfile; and
- secondly that our copyright message in the Info
- box is left unchanged.
-
- Thanks are also due to the following persons whose
- help and suggestions during development of these
- programs have been invaluable: Dr.Tony Seddon,
- Oliver Gunasekara, Lawrence Liffchak, Clive
- Tanner, Charles Durrant, and albeit unbeknown to
- them, all the guys at Acorn Computers Ltd. who
- were responsible for creating the amazing computer
- system you are currently using.
-
- Updates
- -------
- All Data Store software is unfinished, that
- is to say, we are always looking to improve it!
- This means that from time to time we will change
- the release versions of the applications on this
- disc. If you have any problems running our
- software, or indeed if you have any suggestions
- for its improvement, do not hesitate to write to
- us, enclosing the original copy of this disc, a
- first-class stamp for its return to you, and a
- sticky self-addressed label, all in a re-usable
- envelope (let's do our bit for the environment,
- folks!) We guarantee to reply, and we may be able
- to supply updated versions of the software to cure
- your problems straight away. If you are the first
- to report a problem, there may be some delay
- whilst we deal with it, so be patient. Our address
- is: Data Store Software

- The Programs and how to get at them
- -----------------------------------
- For reasons of space, we have had to compact all
- the applications into an 'archive' file. In order
- to use them, they must be extracted from the
- archive first. This process is achieved by a
- public domain utility called '!SparkPlug', which
- is supplied on this disc. To make the process
- simple for you, we have created an application
- called !Programs, which contains both !SparkPlug
- and the archive file. When you run !Programs, a
- window will appear on the screen, looking much
- like a normal directory viewer, and containing all
- the Data Store applications. This is NOT a
- directory viewer, however; it is a viewer showing
- the contents of the archive file. If you try to
- double-click on one of the programs, an error box
- will appear, telling you that you must extract the
- application from the archive before trying to run
- it. This is easily achieved: just drag the icon of
- the application (or applications) you want to
- extract out of the archive viewer into a normal
- directory viewer. After a short period of disc
- activity, the applications will have been
- extracted, and can then be run as normal. You can
- do this for all our programs straight away, or you
- may choose only to extract the ones you are
- immediately interested in, and leave the rest for
- another time.
-
- Manuals for the Programs
- ------------------------
- Each of the applications has an on-line manual
- like this one. You can read it in two different
- ways, via the filer, or via the application
- itself.
-
- Filer help is obtained by selecting the
- application in its directory viewer, then clicking
- the MENU button on the mouse. Slide across the
- second option ('App !xxxxx ⇨') and then select
- 'Help' from the submenu.
-
- To get the on-line manual from a running Data
- Store application, bring up its main menu and
- slide across the first option ('Info ⇨') - an
- 'Info box' will appear, giving the name and
- purpose of the application, a copyright message
- and the date and version number. At the bottom is
- an icon marked 'On-line manual': if you click on
- this icon, the on-line manual will appear.
-
- You can try out the second method right now, by
- clicking MENU on top of this text, sliding across
- 'Info ⇨', and clicking on 'On-line manual': you
- will then be able to read !Manual's own on-line
- manual! In it you will find out how more about
- !Manual, including its search and print
- facilities.
