- MailLabel
- +++++++++
-
-
- MailLabel is the editor and printing program for MailLabelData files
- (FileType &010); you can use it to create new mail labels, edit old ones and
- print them.
-
- MailLabel is controlled from it's main editor window, though it does
- have a menu system for altering some of the variables.
-
- MailLabel is loaded in the same way as other programs: by first
- installing it's icon onto the icon bar, and then choosing the appropriate
- file. This procedure is described in the Risc OS User Guide under the
- section entitled Documents and their Editors in the Introducing the
- Applications Suite chapter.
-
- MailLabel's main window is designed so that the positioning of the
- fields is identical to that on the final printout (Risc OS Printer mode) but
- if you open the window by pressing Adjust on the MailLabel icon on the icon
- bar the window will appear with a description of the field in the space.
- This facility is automatically removed if you have already opened a
- MailLabel window. The main MailLabel window is opened by pressing select
- over the icon on the icon bar. If a file is loaded, then the details from
- the file will be filled into the fields, if not, the fields will be left
- blank.

-
- [ Load Sprite file "MainEmpty" ]
-
- There are two types of field in a MailLabel window. Firstly the
- white filled type; For a correct postal address, all of these must be filled
- in. (However the lower address fields may be left blank for short postal
- addresses.) Secondly, the grey filled type; These are optional. They may be
- filled if necessary, but you are not required to do so.
-
-
- The name field is meant to contain the name of the person to whom
- the letter / package is meant to be sent.
-
- The Address fields are meant to contain the postal address in the
- following order (Starting at the top and going down)
- House Name (where applicable)
- Number & Street name
- Village / District (where applicable)
- Town / City / County
- Country (where necessary)
-
- The postcode field is meant to contain the postcode. Please note that the letters in postcodes are in UPPER CASE.
-
-
-
- The Stamp Field allows the user to print any details about the stamp
- that he may require. This can be very useful if you do not do your own
- posting, such as in an office environment. The positioning of this field on
- the printouts is such that it can be obliterated by having the stamp stuck
- over it.
- Examples:
- 1 nrm For first class letter postage rate
- 2Pack Forsecond class postage of a parcel
- RecDel For recorded delivery postage
- and so on.
-
- The Warning field is designed to carry either a warning about the
- contents of the package, such as:
- WARNING: Do not bend
- *** This Way Up ***
- WARNING: Valuable magnetic Media
- and so on. The field can also be used for an internal address for the
- destination, for example:
- Complaints Department
- Attn: Sales Manager
- Free Gift Offer etc.

-
- => Laoding a MailLabelData file
-
- [ See sprite "FileLogo" and "File" ]
-
- There are several ways of loading a MailLabelData file into
- MailLabel:
- Double click on the file in the directory viewer
- (If MailLabel is not present, it will be loaded with the
- file unless it has not been seen by the filer, in which
- case it will give an error.
- Drag the file onto the MailLabel icon on the icon bar
- Drag the file into the main window.
- In each case, the main window will open with all the fields filled in from the file.
-
- For example if you load the file inside the MailLabel directory called
- Author you will see the following main window appear:
-
- [ See sprite "MainFull" ]
-
- As you can see, all the fields have been filled in, and the file is
- ready to be altered or printed.
-
- The currently selected printout mode will be shown on the main
- MailLabel window in the bottom left hand corner. To change this, move to
- 'Options' on either of the menus (to obtain the menus see the section
- "MailLabel's menus" later in this chapter) and the "Print Options" window
- will appear. The actions of the Print Options window are described overleaf.
-
- [ See sprite "PrintOpts" ]
-
- There are three areas on the Print Options window:
-
- Printout Type;
- This contains three buttons which control the type of printout
-
- Printer Codes;
- This contains three fields which contain the codes for your printer.
-
- Save Preferences;
- This button allows you to save the data in this window to disc.
-
- To change the Printout type, click over the button to the left of
- the printout style you want. (For a description of the printouts, see the
- section entitled "Printout Types" later in this chapter) Only one type can
- be selected at any one time.
-
- The Printer Codes fields allow you to change the codes to turn
- Normal Letter Quality (NLQ) print on and off. The codes shown are correct
- for Epson compatible printers.
- NB: If owners of different brands of printer, which need different codes,
- contact me if they find the correct code for their printer, I will include a
- file of these other codes in the Application.
-
- The "Save Preferences" button will save the data shown in the window
- to disc, so that it will be chosen automatically next time you use
- MailLabel.
-
- Having chosen the correct Print Option, you then set up the printer.
- Turn the printer on, and check that the paper is loaded correctly. If you
- are going to print out in either Draft or NLQ mode, then click over the
- "Print" button on the main window. If you want a Risc OS printout, you will
- have to load the fonts, create a font cache and load !PrinterDM
- (Applications Disc 1). Then you can press "Print"
-
- Standard (draft) print:
- Will produce a printout in the correct formula in your printer's
- typeface. 24 pin printers will only use 9 pins, and 9 pin printers
- will only run over the text once.
-
- Near letter quality:
- Will produce a printout in the correct formula in you printer's
- typeface.
-
- Risc OS print:
- This will produce a printout in full fonts, with boxes around the
- stamp field, and around the whole label. The Warning and Stamp
- fields will be in the bold font.
-
- To change the font used for bold and normal text, you will have to alter
- the variables set up in the run file. Load the !Run file that you will find
- in the MailLabel directory into Edit by dragging. Then change the variables
- MailLabel$BoldFont & MailLabel$BaseFont to the names of the preferred fonts.
-
- => MailLabel's Menus

- Interactive help feature can be turned off by setting the HelpWanted flag in

- chapter)

-
- To flick through the pages of the help file, click with select on
- the up and down arrows.
-
- => MailConv
-
- The versions of !MailLabel from 4.00 onwards support a new file
- format. To convert files created by older versions of MailLabel to this new
- format a converting program has been supplied. It can be found inside the
- Application directory of !MailLabel. (Shift double click the icon) To
- convert a file:
- Load the !MailConv program
- Drag the file onto the !MailConv icon on the icon bar
-
- This will convert the file to the new format. Error messages will
- occur if you attempt to load an old format file into MailLabel, and if you
- attempt to convert a new format file.
-
- For all notes on the versions and distribution conditions applying
- to MailLabel please read through the Application help.
