- Instructions
- ============
-
- This program is much like the famous Life program which is available on
- nearly every computer. The program must find the 'Palette', 'SetUp' and
- 'Sprites' files within the applications resources. An example SetUp file is
- included and the data necessary is fully explained (I hope).
-
-

- NAPOLEON - Napoleonic Battle Simulator
-
-
- Napoleon is designed as a tactical game based on historical
- battles of the Napoleonic era. As the commander in the field you
- can direct your army of infantry, cavalry and artillery.
-
-
- The Opponents
-
- The game can be played by two human players or one player against
- the computer. Players can select four complexity levels and the
- computer can play at three skill levels. The complexity levels
- allow new players to gradually learn the game rules in successive
- stages by a process of phasing in new concepts.
-
-
- The Battlefield Map
-
- The battlefield map window contains a scaled representation of
- the historical terrain including hills, villages, rivers, roads
- and forests. The window only shows a proportion of the whole map
- which may cover an area four or five times larger than the
- screen. A zoom option is included to allow players to get an
- overall view of the battlefield.
-
-
- The Armies
-
- Armies consist of units of infantry, cavalry, artillery and the
- headquarters. Each unit involved in a particular scenario is
- individually represented on the map positioned as they were at
- the start of the battle. Every unit includes its historical
- name, numerical strength, morale situation, formation, movement
- rate and combat effectiveness.
-
-
- Combat
-
- Combat between each unit is calculated by the computer. Factors
- taken into account include:- unit type and formation, terrain,
- range, combat effectiveness, whether units are stationary or
- moving.
-
-
- Movement
-
- The movement ability of a unit is affected by the type of unit,
- terrain type and the formation of the unit. Cavalry, infantry
- and artillery all move at varying speeds and a unit can move at
- maximum or half rate.
-
-
- Morale
-
- The morale of each unit is automatically updated as it fluctuates
- due to changing circumstances. Units are forced to retreat but
- may be rallied with the aid of the headquarters. A unit that has
- its morale broken may effect the morale nearby friendly and enemy
- units. The morale situation of the whole army is also taken into
- account.
-
-
- Visibility
-
- Players can only see enemy units that visible to their own
- troops. Units can be hidden in or behind buildings, hills and
- vegetation.
-
-
- Additional Features
-
- The program includes a host of additional features including:-
- play-by-mail option - fight your opponent through the post,
- turn the sound on or off, display a grid over the map, swap
- players at any time, limited or unlimited time to complete
- orders.
-
-
- Historical Scenarios
-
- Napoleon comes with two authentic historical scenarios - Maida
- and Waterloo. The Maida scenario is a small battle, perfect as
- an introduction or for a quick game. In contrast, the Waterloo
- scenario allows the player to become Napoleon or Wellington and
- command vast armies in excess 50,000 men over an area of 12
- square miles. Each scenario includes a description of the real
- historical events.
-
-
- The Rules
-
- The extensive rules are included in a comprehensive 70 page
- booklet which includes all of the information necessary to play
- the game.
-
-
- Machine Specifications
-
- The program multi-tasks in the RISC-OS Desktop environment. The
- simulator requires an Archimedes 310, 400 series or A3000 with at
- least 1MByte of RAM, RISC-OS and, preferably, a colour monitor.
-
-
- Scenarios Disc One
-
- Two additional scenarios - Borodino and Quatre Bras. Borodino
- was the decisive battle of Napoleon's disastrous invasion of
- Russia with an excess of 200,000 infantry, 50,000 cavalry and
- 1000 guns committed by both sides. Quatre Bras was one of the
- smaller battles of the Hundred Days campaign culminating at
- Waterloo.
