- History
-
- Everywhere in Cornwall the visitor can see the evidence of the county's
- mining past. At different times during the nineteenth century Cornwall
- produced more than half the world's copper and tin, as well as substantial
- quantities of many other metals. It was this activity which, because of
- its demand for trained engineers, led to the foundation of several mining
- schools in the county. As the mining industry declined most of them were
- closed; but Camborne survived, struggled through the depression of the
- nineteen twenties, grew and prospered. Founded originally in 1859, known
- for most of its history as the Camborne School of Metalliferous Mining, and
- renamed Camborne School of Mines in 1971, the School still has close ties
- with Cornish mining but it now serves the minerals industry on a truly
- world-wide basis.
