This is a simple but very effective file scrambler. It works on the principle of scrambling the file against a password which is provided by the user. The same password must be used again to restore the file to its original state.
The scrambling system is very simple, but it is almost impossible to crack without the password.
To SCRAMBLE or UNSCRAMBLE a file.
=================================
The scrambling process is the same as the unscrambling process, so all that is necessary to do to unscramble to file is to scramble it again against the same password as it was originally scrambled against(!).
Double clicking on the !Cypher application installs the application on the iconbar.
Clicking SELECT on the Cypher icon opens the Cyper File dialogue box (see below).
Clicking MENU on the Cypher icon gives the following menu options:
INFO : - Copyright message.
CYPHER : - The option opens a dialogue box, into which the filename and password can be entered in.
QUIT : - Quits the application.
Alternatively, dragging a file from a directory viewer causes the dialogue box to be opened automatically, and the caret moved to the password field.
The Cypher File Dialogue Box:
This contains two fields, one of which contains the filename of the file to cypher, and the other contains the password to cypher it against (which is shown as a set of dashes). If a file is dragged froma directory viewer to the Cypher icon on the iconbar, or onto the filename field, then it is automatically inserted, and the caret moved to the password field.
The password field allows you to enter the cypher password, up to 12 characters which can be in the range 0-9, A-Z or a-z. The characters themselves are not shown, but dashes shown instead. Therefore, be VERY careful when you type the password in.
The OK box, when clicked with SELECT, pops a confirmation box, and if the action is confirmed (again by SELECTing OK) then cyphering takes place. The hourglass shows the percentage of the cypher completed.
The CLEAR box, when clicked with SELECT, clears all the fields, and places the caret in the filename field.
The CANCEL box, when clicked with SELECT, is like clicking the window CLOSE icon. Any filename or password previously entered is preserved for the next time the dialogue box is opened.
WARNING:
You MUST NOT abort coding once it has started, as all the data in the file will be irrovocably lost. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
SHAREWARE
=========
This is a piece of shareware software, which means that the copyright holder gives permission for it to be distributed freely, as long as no charge (above media and postage costs) is made for it, and all the files connected with it are distributed with it.
If you like what you see of !Cypher, then why not try and track down some of our other Shareware packages, or even better, drop us a line, or give us a call and see what other goodies we have. (We tend to specialise in Comms software and hardware, but don't let that put you off!).
If you would like to make a small donation (whatever you feel the package is worth) then that too would be very appreciated, as we are only a tiddly company, and its hard making ends meet (.. like buying Programmers Guides at £80 a throw.... ouch!.. Come on Acorn, I'm sure there are people out there itching to write software for this hoopey machine, but they can't afford the PRM's!!).
Finally, you can E-Mail me either on ORB (081-761-8220, Viewdata, 24 hrs) as "Nick Day" or via Janet to "pna@uk.ac.umist.electrical-engineering.ugh".
Keep Smiling

PS: This is a much improved version of the original !Cypher (version 1.02), so if you see an original, just replace it with this one, as functionally, they are much the same (same algorithm!).
