  4. Because the filetype had to be changed for gzip'ed files,
  5. it's necessary that all files you have get the new filetype.
  6. To ease that task (I myself had alreay gzip'ed hundreds of
  7. files,and I did it by hand!),!Convert is provided, under the terms
  8. of the GNU public license,the NO WARRANTY ,NO CLAIMS part applies.

  10. The old filetype was 003,which is a !ArmSI benchmark result filetype.
  11. I found out just by playing,but in search for a new filetype,I used
  12. Mark Thompsons' !FileType application,that stores some 580 filetypes
  13. (in a version of 1 year ago),and found filetype 20h and 21h still unused.

  15. Albeit filetypes lower than &200h are for personal user use only,
  16. people tend to use them in distributed programs anyway (aehem),because
  17. they don't bother (:-) to go thru the Acorn bureaucracy to get a
  18. filetype assigned.
  19. The new filetype is 020hex ( 32 decimal) . Unix compressed files will
  20. have 021hex.
  21. What you do: copy the !Convert application onto the medium that contains
  22. gzip'ed files of filetype 003. DoubleClick it. The entire medium will be
  23. searched for type 003 files and ,if found,scanned for the first 3 bytes,
  24. and if it's really a gzip'ed file,it will be filetyped to 020h .
  25. That's it.

  27. Hopefully you dont have any directory structures mroe than 8 levels deep,
  28. or the BASIC program will/might have difficulties.
  29. Strange,it doesn't work with MemFS, this shouldn't be a problem,but
  30. MemFS seems to not properly react to OS_GBPB 9 queries, this is also true
  31. for the operation of !gzip and !cruncher,which means: it won't go
  32. recursively down the path,but only process the files/directory directly
  33. dropped on the iconbar icon.
  34. The program is slow,but will hopefully be seldomly run ,anyway.
