  50. Enhanced RISC OS 3 printer manager
  51. ----------------------------------

  53. The enhanced printer manager is designed to run on RISC OS 3.10 or later, and
  54. requires at least 2Mbytes of RAM.
  55.  
  56. This new version comes out of many discussions with Acorn Education Dealers
  57. and Acorn Education Centres. We have taken into account many of the comments
  58. and we hope that the facilities provided by this new version will answer most
  59. of the points made.

  61. Please be aware that this printer manager is incompatible with releases of
  62. TurboDrivers prior to 1st April 1994 and it is not really worth upgrading
  63. !Printers if you only use TurboDrivers. If you do want to use this new
  64. printer manager, Computer Concepts can provide an upgrade to the
  65. TurboDrivers for £10 + VAT to registered customers. All versions of
  66. TurboDrivers after 3.05g will work. The version number of the TurboDriver
  67. can be found by clicking SHIFT+SELECT on the icon on the iconbar and looking
  68. in the titlebar of the window that appears.

  71. Installation
  72. ------------

  74. To support the modifications and extra functionality in !Printers it is
  75. necessary to provide some updated modules on the new disc.  !System contains
  76. an updated version of the ColourTrans module.  Use the !SysMerge application
  77. to update your current version of !System.  A new version of PDumperSupport
  78. and the associated printer driver modules are loaded automatically by
  79. !Printers when needed.

  82. What's new?
  83. -----------
  84.  
  85. The following changes have been made to !Printers:
  86.  
  87. 1. 'background' printing.
  88.    This very useful feature has been added to the printer manager. In effect,
  89.    this causes printing to be directed to a spool file for files in the
  90.    queue, after which the spool file is then sent to the printer as a
  91.    background activity. Since not all applications support queueing of
  92.    printing, this feature will not work with all applications. Background
  93.    printing is an option selectable in the 'Connection' dialogue box.
  94.  
  95.    It should be realised, however, that spooling printer data to a file can
  96.    result in very large files being created. This option should not,
  97.    therefore, be used when !Scrap lives on a floppy disc. It should be
  98.    treated as a hard-disc or network only option.
  99.  
  100. 2. Improved colour printing support.
  101.    Acorn has been working in conjunction with third parties to design and
  102.    develop new ColourTrans and PDumperSupport modules. In addition to better
  103.    colour rendition at the 256 colour level, the drivers now provide support
  104.    for 24bpp colour rendition through the use of a three pass system. This is
  105.    done transparently to the application and the user. Applications which can
  106.    make use of this include Draw and Artworks. !Paint, and other similar
  107.    sprite-based packages, will not print correctly in colour using 16 million
  108.    colours option. Sprites can be printed from !Draw if you want to print
  109.    using this option.

  111.    A substantial part of the colour printing flexibility comes from the use
  112.    of a printer palette file. This copy of !Printers contains a general
  113.    purpose palette file (!Printers.Palettes.0) which may not give quite as
  114.    good results as some printer drivers from third party companies which
  115.    have been produced for specific printers. New palette files can be
  116.    created using the !RePro tool available from Oak Solutions.
  117.  
  118.    Note that if you *do* create your own palette file, you should save it
  119.    with a palette file number of 10000 or higher to avoid clashes with any
  120.    commercially produced palette files. You will also need to edit the
  121.    graphics modes in the printer definition file so that they refer to your
  122.    new palette file rather than palette file 0.
  123.  
  124. 3. New and improved printer definition files.
  125.    We have a number of new printer definition files for colour and black &
  126.    white printers. Drivers for the Hewlett Packard Deskjet 500C, 550C and
  127.    1200C have been included; the 550C driver will also work correctly for the
  128.    Deskjet 310 colour. The BJC600 has been included as an additional PDF. New
  129.    black and white dot matrix PDF's have been included for various printers.
  130.    The Epson Stylus 800 has been included with its own PDF which will also
  131.    support the other printers in the Stylus range. The original PDF's
  132.    supplied have been improved to provide higher resolution colour printing
  133.    options. The lists of supported printers supplied within each manufacturer
  134.    directory have been significantly updated with information supplied or
  135.    verified in most cases by the manufacturers to include nearly 300 printers
  136.    in total.

  138. 4. Reduced disc swapping.
  139.    Single floppy drive users have suffered in the past from the overlaying
  140.    system employed in previous versions of the printer manager. For users of
  141.    dot matrix or Laserjet class printers, the necessity to re-insert the
  142.    printer driver disc has been removed. This should alleviate a lot of
  143.    problems for the floppy disc system users within schools. When printing to
  144.    PostScript printers it will, however, still be necessary to insert the
  145.    original printer driver disc.
  146.  
  147. 5. Sensible default options.
  148.    The PDFs will now load with more popular default options selected.
  149.    Printers that print in colour will now select colour and sensible
  150.    resolution options when they are loaded thus reducing the amount of
  151.    configuration required when the printer manager is first set up.
  152.  
  153. 6. PostScript printing.
  154.    Various changes have been made to PostScript printing, including
  155.    standardising the PostScript output.
  156.  
  157. 7. Printing with Acorn Access.
  158.    !Printers has been updated for use with the new Acorn Access package. A
  159.    new option from the Printer Control menu allows the 'Shared' option to be
  160.    selected if Acorn Access is installed. Please refer to the Acorn Access
  161.    notes for further information.
  162.  
  163. 8. New templates.
  164.    Both 2D and 3D templates are provided. Selection is dependant on the
  165.    setting of bit 1 of byte &8C in CMOS RAM. There is therefore no
  166.    requirement for the application to be updated with the sprites and
  167.    template provided by !NewLook.
  168.  
  169. 9. File Output.
  170.    It is now possible, when printing to file, for subsequent output to be
  171.    appended to previous output sent to the same file.
  172.  
  173. 10. Printing 'Output' files.
  174.     When printing 'Output' files created by printing with a dp class
  175.     printer, the problem whereby an address exception could occur at the end
  176.     of the print cycle has now been fixed.
  177.  
  178. 11. Paper size editing.
  179.     The 'Edit Paper Size' option now selects the paper type that is
  180.     configured for that particular printer driver.
  181.  
  182. 12. Cancelling a print job.
  183.     When the Escape key is used to stop a print job the printer manager will
  184.     now send a reset to the printer. It is therefore necessary to ensure that
  185.     the printer is online when escape is pressed.

  187. 13. Loading PDFs.
  188.     New PDFs loaded into the printer manager will now be automatically
  189.     installed onto the icon bar so the user does not have to specifically
  190.     make them active.
  191.  
  192. 14. Look and feel.
  193.     Various changes have been made to the printer manager to make it more
  194.     Style Guide compliant, eg the removal of dbox close buttons and the
  195.     addition of 'Cancel' buttons.
  196.  
  197. 15. New structure to !System.
  198.     !System has been enhanced so that it can now act as a container of
  199.     shared resources for both RISC OS 2 and RISC OS 3 applications. If
  200.     modules need to be released for specific versions of RISC OS (eg the
  201.     ColourTrans module released with this disc) then it should be placed in
  202.     the appropriate directory, ie !System.310.Modules for RISC OS 3.10 or
  203.     later, or !System.Modules for RISC OS 2. Note that if a module can be
  204.     used by all versions of the operating system, then it should continue to
  205.     be placed in !System.Modules.
