  35. This is the second CD produced by Archive. If you are a regular reader,
  36. you may already have a copy of the first (1995) CD, so you will know
  37. roughly what to expect. The new CD is a complete replacement for the
  38. first. It contains all of the material on the previous CD plus Volume 9
  39. of the magazine and lots more of Paul Hooperæs multimedia. If you are
  40. not a subscriber to Archive magazine but have just Édiscoveredæ this CD,
  41. and do not know about Archive, here is a short description of what it is
  42. and what it does.

  44. Archive is a monthly subscription only magazine covering all aspects of
  45. Acorn computers. It first appeared in October 1987, shortly after the
  46. introduction of the first Archimedes computer. Unlike most other
  47. magazines, the contents are almost entirely written by Acorn enthusiasts
  48. and users, both professional and amateur. As it is normally only a few
  49. days between completion and distribution, you will often read the latest
  50. news in Archive a month or more before it appears in print elsewhere.

  52. Archive carries only a small amount of advertising, and does not produce
  53. any software or hardware itself, so you can be confident that reviews
  54. and articles about products are free of bias, especially as they are
  55. written by genuine users rather than professional journalists. It is a
  56. magazine written by Acorn users for Acorn users, so the contents are
  57. dictated by the interests and wishes of the readers.

  59. The magazine features news, reviews, readers hints & tips (very popular),
  60. articles for beginners, the latest technical information, free small
  61. adæs, help requested and offered, comments from readers, and much more.

  79.                         Why an Archive CD?

  82. When the first Archive CD was proposed in 1995 people asked what was the
  83. point of putting the contents of the magazine on a CD?  It is normally
  84. only available to subscribers to the magazine, so why would they want it
  85. when they already had the printed version?  
  86.  
  87. When it appeared  most saw how useful it is, and here are some of the
  88. benefits that have been discovered by people who bought the 1995 CD.
  89.  
  90. We know readers often treasure their back issues of Archive as a useful
  91. reference library. The CD lets you empty quite a bit of your bookshelf.
  92.  
  93. It's much quicker and easier to search the CD than trying to scan a
  94. printed page for a particular article or reference. You may have a
  95. problem or want information on an item and remember seeing it referred
  96. to somewhere in the magazine. With the CD you can find it in seconds.

  98. Another advantage has been pointed out by users who have poor eyesight.
  99. You can use a higher magnification to make it easier to read the text on
  100. screen, or you can print pages at A4 instead of the normal A5 size,
  101. which will make the text very much larger.

  103. Plus you will have all the programs on the magazine discs, the Archive
  104. Fact File (invaluable when you need the address or phone number of a
  105. supplier), and lots more, all collected together in one place.

  109.                         What's on the CD
  110.                        ==================

  112. This CD contains the entire contents of all the magazines since Volume 4
  113. issue 5 (February 1991) and the disc which accompanied each issue from
  114. the very first issue. It therefore probably comprises the single largest
  115. repository of information about the entire range of Acorn machines ever
  116. collected together. Some of the early material may concern products that
  117. are now obsolete, although still in use, and so the information may not
  118. be easily available elsewhere.

  120. For the first three+ years, Archive was compiled on Apple computers and
  121. cannot easily be made available. From Volume 4 onwards, the magazine was
  122. published entirely on the Archimedes using Computer Conceptæs Impression.
  123. These Impression documents are obviously rather large. Most will require
  124. a machine with 4Mb of RAM, and some may need even more.
  125.  
  126. The contents of the magazine are also provided as plain text. The text
  127. files can be found in the TEXT directory, and are supplied in several
  128. formats. For those with plenty of RAM, each volume is contained in a
  129. single large file to make it easy to search quickly for keywords
  130. relating to products or other items in which you are interested. For
  131. those with less memory, each issue is also provided separately.

  133. To make it even simpler to find items in which you are interested, there
  134. is a program called !TEXTFIND which will search these files and produce
  135. lists of file + line references for you to look up. Instructions are
  136. provided in the !HELP file inside the !TEXTFIND directory. (Hold down
  137. the SHIFT key and double-click on the application to open the directory.)

  139. One very popular section of the magazine is always the ÉHints and Tipsæ
  140. supplied by readers. This is so useful that it has been reproduced on
  141. its own, as a single large file covering all issues, as one file for
  142. each volume, and as individual issues. Similarly, PRODUCTS contains
  143. information on new products as they were introduced, upgrades, and other
  144. facts. As with Hints and Tips this is supplied in different formats.

  146. Also included is the Archive Glossary. This is invaluable for anyone who
  147. has ever seen a term or abbreviation that they havenæt understood. It is
  148. divided into two sections, Main and Internet, and each is provided as
  149. plain text, Impression documents, and Rich Text Format (RTF).

  151. As well as the magazine and magazine discs the contents of some other
  152. discs supplied by NCS are included. There are Utility discs containing
  153. useful Public Domain, Shareware, and other programs as well as many of
  154. the ÉSharewareæ series. Although no longer supplied by NCS, for many
  155. years they comprised a library of PD material. Some are obsolete or
  156. superceded by later versions, but it does provide a valuable collection.

  158. All of this is exactly as it appeared in or with the original issue of
  159. the magazine. It has not been updated, and later versions of programs
  160. have not been substituted. This was deliberate because it was felt that
  161. it would be wrong to change in any way what is, in effect, a historical
  162. record of the development of the Archimedes series of computers. For the
  163. same reason some special magazine supplements are also included, like
  164. the ones describing the introduction of the A5000 and RiscPC.

  166. There are two further collections. Directory DISCS.GERALD contains the
  167. programs which accompany Gerald Fittonæs regular column. This was
  168. originally devoted to Colton Softwareæs Pipedream program, but later
  169. expanded to cover Resultz, Fireworkz, Wordz, etc, as well as general
  170. topics. With material directly relating to the magazine column, there
  171. are often example spreadsheets and text files, frequently sent in by
  172. readers. These are all collected together here for your convenience, as
  173. well as appearing in their correct place on each monthly disc
  174.  
  175. Because you may not actually have one of these packages, we have also,
  176. with the permission of Colton Software, included the Édemoæ versions of
  177. PipeDream 4, Wordz, Resultz, Fireworkz and Fireworkz Pro. These will
  178. enable you to load and examine all of the example files. These Édemoæ
  179. versions are Éfully functionalæ, but you canæt Print or Save, and there
  180. are no spelling checkers. If you do use another spreadsheet program,
  181. this will enable you to load the example files and, perhaps, translate
  182. the methods used to your own program.

  184. Finally, there is a large amount of assorted multimedia collected by
  185. Paul Hooper. Much of this will be of interest for educational purposes.
  186. Some may not work from the CD but must be copied to a floppy disc. Parts
  187. of this material may not be very sophisticated as it was often produced
  188. by teachers for use in their own classes, or by pupils as a Éprojectæ.

  190. As many of these programs were produced using !Magpie or !Genesis,
  191. read-only versions of these are also provided.
