Video Digitiser

Those of you who went to the PCW Show would have seen the impressive
demonstrations that Mike Harrison was doing of his Archimedes digitiser
which Watford Electronics are marketting. The basic resolution is 512 x
256, in 64 grey levels, though you can go up to 512 x 512 on a station
ary object. The speed depends on the resolution, but at 512 x 256 it
does approximately 10 frames/second and 128 x 128, 25 frames/second. The
low level software driver will be in ROM and will include frame
grabbing, previewing, scaling, rotation, X/Y flip, negative and pseudo-
colour images, printer dumps and data compression. These will all be
available via OS commands and SWI calls, so programs can be written in
BASIC or other languages with access to these facilities. Price is
öaround the ú200 markò and availability is öhopefully the first week in
Novemberò.

Logo devotees will be interested to know of two ways of getting Logo
going on the Archimedes. The first is LOGOsoftæs Master Logo. It will
run under the 6502 emulator and is available now. Ring Chris Squire on

For a Logo that will make best use of Archi-medesæ amazing processing
speed, you will have to wait for Logotronæs Archimedes Logo which uses
full native ARM mode.

Archimedes is excellent news for Logo users, and Logotron, whose Logo is
the standard for British school with over 50,000 users, now supplies it

Archimedes Logo has all the features of a mainframe Logo. It is the most
powerful debugging environment for Logo with a workspace of potentially
up to 16 Mbytes, the largest Logo workspace on a microcomputer. There is
a 132 column editor with 1024 x 1024 pixel graphics resolution.
Documentation for the new Logo indicates ways in which Logo users can
benefit from the power of the Archimedes.

The first generation of 8-bit educational computers was never able to do
full justice to the potential of Logo because of limited memory space
and relatively slow processors. öThese restrictions have limited the
take-up of Logo, but things will change rapidly when people see Logo on
the Archimedesò, says Logotronæs technical director, Christopher Roper.
The Archimedes Logo was developed jointly by Acorn and Logotron so that
it is functionally compatible with Logotron Logo and has all the
characteristic extensions.

Intelligent Interfaces who produced the IEEE interface podule that we
mentioned last month, have now launched an ARM second processor for the

We have a pre-release version of Artisan from Clares Micros Ö itæs a
very impressive art package using the WIMP environment. It has tremen
dous potential and looks as if it should come up to the standard of some
of the Apple Macintosh art software, but we are not going to review it
until we get the full release version. It is difficult to give a fair
review when a number of the features are still missing.

Å Those who are used to using our own Continuous Processing ROM with
Wordwise Plus will be pleased to know that it is now available in disc
form. The facilities are those of CP-ROM3, not CP-ROM2. We are making it
available for ú8 as an up-grade (i.e. if you already have CP-ROM 2 or 3)
and as a new purchase for ú18 including manual.

Å The Inter Series software (-WORD -SHEET and -CHART) from Computer
Concepts is now available but only on ROM, so you will need a back-plane
and a ROM-podule before you can get started. CC are producing their own
ROM podule (see below). If you already have any of the Inter-ROMs, you
can up-grade them to the Archimedes versions for ú11.50 per ROM but this
can only be done directly through CC, not through the Archive magazine.

Å Computer Conceptsæ ROM podule is to have 8 slots, like the Acorn
equivalent, but instead of having only two slots for RAM and the other
six slots for ROM, each of the eight slots can contain either RAM or ROM
and there will be an optional battery back-up available. The unit will

Å Acorn Languages Ö The full release versions of C, LISP and PROLOG are
all available now and PASCAL and FORTRAN77 should be available by the
time you get this magazine. A version of KERMIT is being tested at the

You need to be aware however that none of the compiled languages comes
with an editor. Acornsoft supply an editor separately Ö TWIN which can
also be used as a BASIC editor by using keywords TWIN or TWINO. The
editor, which is used almost exclusively by Acornæs own software

not yet decided what their up-grade policy is going to be when the full
release version of TWIN becomes available. Acorn say that the present

software package has been produced by Serious Statistical Software. The
package contains so many different facilities, none of which means
anything to me, that I wonæt even attempt to give a summary. If you know

then this package is probably for you! Price ú150, but they will give
7.5% discount if you quote your Archive number. We are intending to do a
full review of this in a later issue of Archive.

These are upgraded versions of the original BBC programs, making use of
the superior speed and facilities of Archimedes. (Upgrades are available
for existing users.) They include: Bank Manager (ú25) for handling
personal finance including a range of different accounts, credit
accounts, transfers, cash flow, bank reconciliation, reports, foreign
currency and lots more, Business Utilities (ú12) which works with
Manager and adds trials balance and spreadsheet analysis, suitable for
self-employed businessmen and professionals, Typing Tutor (ú15), Easy
Reader (ú12.50) (Iæll have to get Tim to review it!) and Madlibs
(ú12.50), öa hilarious game which also teaches English grammar.ò Contex

Å RESOURCE, the educational software publishers are to publish a set of
utilities to allow programmers to identify and cure problems in
converting software to run under the 6502 emulator. For example,
öBBCrunò creates an environment in which some öillegallyò programmed
software will operate as if on a standard BBC or Master. They are also
doing a Versatile Interface Podule which will allow sampling of analogue
data (up to 60kHz) via two A to D converters. 32 digital interface lines
are also available on this system. To work with this is EARS, a dual
channel digital recording system which can use the VIP to sample sounds
and then play them back through the computeræs audio system.

Å The first desktop publishing package for the Archimedes! That is the
claim of LTS Ltd, and no other company has yet informed Archive of a
similar package being available. Newsmaster has 34 fonts in sizes from 8
to 60 point with a variety of typefaces. Over 170 dotmatrix, inkjet and
laser printers are supported. The cost is just ú60+VAT but it needs
1Mbyte of ram and Acornæs IBM emulator which suggests that it might not
be as fast as one might hope on an Archimedes. When we get a review
copy, weæll let you know how good it really is.

version of Logo (i.e. it does not run under the 6502 emulator). It is
claimed to be over 10 times faster than BBC Logo, will use all Archi
medes graphics modes plus a 1024 x 960 pixel graphics resolution mode.
It gives program control over error handling so that the level of help
offered by error messages can be adjusted to suit studentsæ needs, it
supports the FPU and has a multiple screen turtle control mode. For ú60
you get reference manual, tutorial manual and example files. (Note that
extension modules written in 6502 code will NOT be compatible. Logotron
say that various Archimedes extension modules will appear during 1988.)

Å 4096 colour screen dump for Integrex 132 colour ink jet printer.
Musbury Consultants (!) have produced a screen dump which will cope with
the full 4096 colours that Archimedes can generate. A full screen takes
about 4 minutes to dump and the results are quite impressive from the
samples they sent us Ö even the aspect ratio is correct Ö circles are
circular! The full price is ú30 but they are prepared to offer a
discount through Archive magazine, so if you send your orders in to us,
you only need send ú25.

Å Maths Movies╔ Manchester Polytechnic has made some computer Émoviesæ
to help students appreciate the subtleties of things like fourier
transforms. The transforms of moving two-dimensional shapes are
calculated and re-played as slowly or as quickly as you like Ö up to 5
frames a second. Each disc, costing ú10, consists of two movies, each of
21 frames, of specific moving objects, e.g. growing squares, rotating
bars and grid patterns. The programs need a 1M machine and each disc
comes with a text file explaining the theory of the transform and
special points to note with the particular movies. For a full list of

Å Although not specifically for Archimedes, those of you with an
Archimedes and perhaps a BBC and who are rich enough to own TWO
printers(!) will like to know about a öCross Switchò by Data Switches
available from Datastore in Bromley. It has a single switch which swops
over the two printers between the two computers. It costs ú66.95, but
presumably you would also need to buy two Centronics-Centronics cables
to link to each of the printers.

Å Graphics Library. Micro Studio are launching a three disk set of
colour graphics pictures for inclusion in programs or for use with
Artisan or GraphicWriter. This first set of disks (ú21.95) should be
available by the time you read this and others will become available
through the year. The sample disc they sent had some very good animal
pictures and a few others that were very clever but a number of the
others were what I would call Éidiosyncraticæ, amongst which I would
include the head of a gentleman with a black beard and horns against a
red background! (To be fair, there was also a picture of Jesus, breaking
bread!)

tronics who specialise solely in Archimedes and aim to produce öquality
software at sensible pricesò. For just ú5.95 inclusive, you get
Mastermind, Sliding Block Puzzles and Solitaire as add-ons to your
desktop. All three have different levels of difficulty and you can use
your own pictures (created with Artisan, Paint etc) with SBP.

get the other utility that comes with it which enables you to enter *-
commands from within the desktop!

Å CJE Micros have a disc interface for an external 5.25ö drive Ö ú30,
quite neat, says one reader, has link settings so that you can swop the
internal and external drive identities, i.e. make the 5.25ò drive into
drive 0 Ö very useful with the PC emulator for running protected
software.

Å Ace Computing are about to launch ÉEuclidæ, their 3-D graphics
animation system. (End of March, hopefully.) The idea is to provide ARM
code routines which a relatively inexperienced programmer could access
from within BASIC. Objects can be built up from a library of simple
geometric shapes. Re-drawing, from the sample weæve seen, is extremely
fast (written in ARM code) so that you could get smooth animation of
simple shapes, zooming in and out and rotating around, even without
using shadow screens. It will come with a basic library of shapes and
users are encouraged to share the shapes they generate with other Euclid

Å Computer Concepts ROM Podule We havenæt actually got any ROMs to put
in it yet, but what we are getting excited about is the RAM filing
system which allows you to do all sorts of useful things.

The RAM filing system is like the ADFS in many ways though obviously you
cannot use *DRIVE, *FORMAT, *TITLE, *VERIFY, etc) Ö you can, however,
have directories, you can *COPY things and you can put your favourite
utility programs in it. Itæs great!

To copy between the ADFS and RFS, for example, you might say:

For me, the best facility is being able to have all my own special
little programs in the RFS so that they are always available Ö as if
they were in the LIBRARY directory on the current disc except that they
are always available even when you change discs. To set it up you have
to set the Éfilepath aliasæ so that the Archimedes looks in the RFS as
well as the ADFS library for files. You might think that you would
therefore have to set this up every time you switch on the machine Ö
perhaps by using a disc with a special boot file. Not a bit of it!

You can set the Archimedes to boot up in the RFS by altering the
configuration. The RFS boot program can then set up the filepath alias
(and other aliases that you use regularly or function key definitions)
and then return to the ADFS and continue as though nothing had happened.
That way you can have your RFS library and your own aliases permanently
installed as if they were part of the operating system. So even when you
do a <ctrl-break>, say after *configuring something, it restores all
your aliases and function key definitions!

The ROM podule with battery-backup is ú63 to Archive members and the 32k
ram chips are ú9.50 each (128k chips are not currently available.) The
podules are becoming available, but demand is far out-stripping supply,
so all dealers are being strickly rationed. If you want one, send in

Artisan users. Amongst other things, it provides 6 extra fonts, extra
colour fill patterns, an editor for changing the colour patterns on the

EX800, JX80, Fujitsu DL3400 and Star LC10 colour printers and a module
which provides a way of merging pictures (including a fastload module) Ö
you can make up a very impressive Artisan öslide-showò Ö and you get
four new sample screens to impress your friends. (In stock and available
through Archive for ú18) The Integrex screendumps are very impressive as
visitors to the Manchester M.U. Show will be able to testify, especially
when printed on the special paper which Clares Micros can supply for ú5
per 25m roll.

disc drive on the Archimedes from CJE Microæs╔ Firstly an interface
cable for ú30. Then there is a link-swapping switch for ú8 that will
allow the external drive to be :0 (or, more importantly, A: on MS.DOS).
Then thereæs a Drive Select Translation Cable for an extra ú9 which
allows you to leave the links on the external drive set to zero (so you
can swap the drive over with another computer, e.g. a BBC) and still
have it accessed from the Archimedes as if it were drives 1 and 2 (or
there is a version that makes it 2 and 3). If you canæt work out what
you need from that lot, give CJE a ring! Then there is some software for
ú15 that allows you to read (but not write) DFS discs using the
