  1. Å   42M removable hard drives Ö Oak Computers are now selling a 42M
  2. removable SCSI drive for ú1185 + VAT (ú1190 inc VAT through Archive)
  3. including a SCSI podule. Remove the data cartridge for security reasons
  4. or for portability from machine to machine or for durability in transit.
  5. Extra 42M cartridges cost ú99 + VAT (ú105 through Archive). These are
  6. true hard drives, not the slow öBernoulliò type. More details in the
  7. SCSI Column on page 43.

  9. Å   512M SCSI drive Ö Oak Computers are now selling a 512M external SCSI
  10. drive for ú4085 + VAT (ú3990 inc VAT through Archive) including a
  11. podule. This is actually a 640M drive but Acornæs software can only
  12. access 512M per logical drive Ö but see SCSI Column on page 43.

  14. Å   A3000 memory prices down again. Morley boards are down to ú100 and
  15. ú265 for the 1M and 3M respectively and Atomwide are down to ú90 and
  16. ú365. The Atomwide 3M board has not gone down in price as much as we had
  17. hoped, as the price of the 4M bit chips is still staying fairly high at
  18. the moment.

  20. Å   A3000 memory boards Ö Computerware have now entered the A3000 memory
  21. board market with one which uses the same (excellent) philosophy as
  22. Atomwide. The idea is that it has 8 chips only. If you want a 1M
  23. upgrade, you put eight 1M bit chips in (same chips as A410/1 memory
  24. upgrade at ú60/Mbyte) but if you want a total of 4Mbytes in your
  25. machine, you use eight 4M bit chips. (Sadly, it does not give you a
  26. total of 5Mbytes because the internal 1Mbyte is disabled Ö the existing
  27. MEMC can only address 4Mbytes of ram.) The current Archive prices are
  28. ú35 for the unpopulated board, ú90 if it is populated with 1Mbyte and
  29. ú365 with 4M.

  31. Å   A310 memory upgrade prices are not falling at the moment except that
  32. we have some Watford boards we are selling off: 1M at ú290 and 3M at
  33. ú490. Ring if you want either of them.

  36. the memory upgrade ram for A410æs down to ú60 per Mbyte.

  38. Å   Alien Invasion Ö Alien Images, Dabs Pressæ games software arm has
  39. produced an Archimedes version of the classic space invaders game. The
  40. game play is identical to the original black & white game that I used to
  41. play on my 2k Acorn Atom but there are 1,000+ levels, a sprite editor,
  42. speed control, etc. ú14.95 from Dabs or ú14 through Archive.

  44. Å   ArcComm is back Ö After several months of being unobtainable, ArcComm
  45. communications package is back. It has some new features and a new price
  46. of ú29 + VAT (ú31 through Archive). Tim Saxton is having a look at it
  47. and I hope to have his comments in next monthæs magazine.

  49. Å   ArcLaser Ö A direct rival to Computer Conceptsæ Laser Direct is now
  50. available at ú899 (+VAT + P&P) compared with CCæs ú999 +VAT. It uses the
  51. same Qume laser engine, so the difference is in the podule hardware and
  52. the driving software. We hope to do a direct comparison soon. The price
  53. was ú799 but that was only an introductory price so when you add
  54. carriage (ú12.15 + VAT) you get a total of ú1047.82 which is getting
  55. pretty close to the allinclusive Archive price of ú1080 for Laser
  56. Direct. Unfortunately, Calligraph will not give sufficient dealer
  57. discount (unless I buy 10 at a time!) to offer a discount through the
  58. magazine so you will have to order direct from Calligraph.

  60. Å   CadMust Ö Complete design system for digital and analog circuits.
  61. CadMust Schematic provides schematic diagram drawing and CadMust PCB
  62. gives a PCB layout facility. Both are available from USARC in Amsterdam.

  64. Å   ChangeFSI Ö A new RISCOS version is available from Wild Vision for ú22
  65. + VAT. Their press release says that Acorn öhas decided against placing
  66. this program in the public domain and it is being distributed under
  67. licence from Acorn.ò

  69. Å   Deeva from Calderglen Computers Ltd is a sideways scrolling
  70. Éshootemupæ program for ú19.95 inc VAT.

  72. Å   EPROM Programmer Ö Racing Car Computers have produced an EPROM
  73. programmer for the Archimedes including multitasking interface software.
  74. It costs ú149.95 inc VAT, handles standard CMOS & NMOS ROMs from 2716 to
  75. 27512 and is available in two forms: an external box with its own p.s.u.
  76. that communicates at 19,200 baud via the serial port and a parallel
  77. version at the same price which takes the form of a podule with a ZIF
  78. socket on the end of a ribbon cable. They are also doing adaptor boards
  79. that will allow it to program microcontrollers.

  81. Å   Fan speed controller Ö Ray Maidstone, who has been investigating the
  82. idea of slowing down the fans on Archimedes computers to reduce the
  83. noise to an acceptable level, has come up with a circuit board which
  84. does just that. It fixes onto the fan powersupply connector and sits at
  85. such an angle that it also acts as an airflow deflector to ensure that
  86. the air which is drawn in actually goes to the parts of the board that
  87. need cooling. He has used temperature probes to research all this, so it
  88. isnæt just a madcap scheme. He will be selling them by the time you read

  92. Å   Hostages from Superior Software, ú19.95 (ú18 through Archive) is an
  93. action graphics adventure about╔ hostages.

  95. Å   Inertia Ö A new game from 4th Dimension ú19.95 (or ú18 through
  96. Archive). Explore two huge, colourful landscapes in your highly
  97. sensitive craft negotiating ramps, jumps and various hazards. Includes
  98. two soundtracks.

  100. Å   Interactive Video Ö British Nuclear Forum have produced three
  101. interactive video discs for use with the Archimedes. One of them has won
  102. a ÉNebbieæ award. (Itæs an award from an international interactive video
  103. disc organisation in Lincoln, Nebraska.) The idea is that you control
  104. the video by clicking on the screen with a mouse and the Archimedes
  105. controls the video disc. I played with an Apple Mac version of this sort
  106. of thing at the Science Museum in Amsterdam when I was there on my hols.
  107. It was great fun and has a lot of educational potential but until it
  108. gets going there is no incentive for producers to do the videos and
  109. until there are some videos thereæs no market for the video controllers!

  111. Å   Jiglet from 4mation is a junior version of Jigsaw at only ú29+VAT (ú30
  112. through Archive). Aimed at younger Archimedians, it gives a choice of 16
  113. pictures made up into 4, 6, 9 or 12 piece jigsaws.

  115. Å   Memory Magic is a game from Cambridge International Software based on
  116. an Indian game where you have to remember the contents of a dish having
  117. seen it for a certain length of time. (Kimæs game, we used to call it.)
  118. The price is ú15.95 (ú15 through Archive) and it is due for release at
  119. the All Formats Fair on August 4th.

  121. Å   MicciMouse is a mouseandicon driver front end for the Pineapple
  122. Digitiser, providing facilities for monitoring, capturing, manipulating
  123. and arranging images. The basic version is available for ú4 from
  124. Chessfield Software. An enhanced version with much more comprehensive
  125. facilities is available for ú21, also from Chessfield.

  127. Å   MicroDrive Ö a golf simulator (yes, another one!) from Cambridge
  128. International Software. Full 3D view, no power meter but a full use of
  129. mouse keys to control the swing. The price is ú19.95 (ú18 through
  130. Archive) and it is due for release at the All Formats Fair on August
  131. 4th.

  133. Å   NStore Ö National Curriculum recordkeeping and reporting for primary
  134. schools from HS Software (ú24.95) stores records on all the Statements
  135. of Attainment from levels 1 to 6. Provides various facilities for
  136. graphs, level summaries, ranking, etc.

  138. Å   Ovation demo disc Ö for ú5 from Beebug Ltd, you can get a demo disc of
  139. their new DTP package, Ovation. Itæs probably worth having anyway, even
  140. if you donæt want to buy Ovation because on it are Acornæs Outline Font
  141. Manager and a couple of Beebug fonts. The cheapest way to get the font
  142. manager otherwise is to buy Acornæs Font Starter pack at ú47! The fonts
  143. and the manager can then be used with !Draw (free) and FontFX (ú10) to
  144. very good effect for ultracheap semiDTP.

  146. Å   Shareware 31 Ö now available containing an editor for use with C,
  147. graph plotter, desktop magnifier, quacking good demo, funny mouse
  148. pointer, ÉSecret Gardenæ adventure, Taipei Chinese game, BASIC program
  149. compressor, DFS reader, complete DOS filing system, BASIC access from
  150. desktop, computer shutdown from desktop.

  152. Å   Shareware 32 Ö now available containing a whole load of lineart from
  153. various sources plus various utilities: sprite to GIF, sprite to TIFF,
  154. !Translator, Teletext to sprite, sprite mode converter, util to display
  155. info on screen modes, Impression key shortcuts, convert spooled text for
  156. Acorn DTP, Textonly printer driver, keystrip for !Draw, palettes to
  157. improve LC10 and Integrex colour output quality.

  159. Å   Snippet from 4mation is a screens workshop for ú29+VAT (ú30 through
  160. Archive). It provides loading, saving, printing, carouselling, etc of
  161. screens. It can add borders, change colours and do special effects.

  163. Å   WorraCad, Oak Computersæ precision CAD system, is here at last Ö well,
  164. it will be by the time you read this. Oak have gone through several
  165. rewrites of this software in order to really get it right as far as
  166. importing and exporting via multitasking are concerned. It will work
  167. properly with Draw, Paint, Impression, Euclid, Genesis, PipeDream, etc.
  168. It is objectoriented and uses floating point arithmetic to 18 signifi
  169. cant figures. It has tools for generating geometric constructions such
  170. as tangents and normals, and other facilities including hatching,
  171. dimensioning, scaling, mirroring and rotating. Even with all these
  172. features, it will run on an unexpanded A3000. From what I saw of it at
  173. the Econet Conference, it is a very impressive piece of software and, in
  174. my view, grossly underpriced at ú75 + VAT (ú80 through Archive). Mind
  175. you, they say that this is an öintroductory priceò although they give no
  176. indication of when it will be going up in price. The only bit of bad
  177. news, some would say, is that it uses a dongle (identical to the
  178. Impression dongle). If you have already got Impression, you can either
  179. put the two dongles together or send them back and get a single dongle
  180. that will work with both pieces of software.

  182. Å   XRun is a yet another vertically scrolling shootemup program from XFM
  183. Software (ú9.95). It is described as having ö20kHz sampled sounds,
  184. excellent graphics 18 levels, multiple powerups etc.ò Having tried out a
  185. review copy, it is very similar to YAIG on Shareware 16. XFM are
  186. offering a Éspecial priceæ to Archive readers of ú7.95 Ö just quote your
  187. subscription number.
