  3. Here are a few more hints and tips mostly from the editoræs dabblings in
  4. preparing the magazine...

  6. Å   Dashes Ö If you, like me, donæt like to see hyphens used where dashes
  7. should be used Ö i.e. in places like this Ö you will probably be sick
  8. and fed up of typing <alt-153>. (Note that the character in öalt-153ò is
  9. a hyphen, just in case you werenæt aware of the difference.) If you are
  10. importing text into Impression, occurrences of Éhyphen hyphenæ will be
  11. converted automatically by Impression into a long dash ÿ see what I
  12. mean. Personally, I prefer the shorter one so what I have done is set up
  13. the abbreviation dictionary with Éexpand as you typeæ and used an
  14. underline character to be turned into a dash. The only drawback is that
  15. itæs OK for things like the dashes earlier in this paragraph, but if,
  16. for example, you use dashes in phone numbers, as 0603Ö766592, the
  17. abbreviation technique does not work and you are back to  <alt-153>.
  18. Anyone any other ideas?

  20. Å   Find styles Ö If you want to find a style, get up the find/replace box
  21. with <ctrl-f4> and then click in the menu box to the right of the Find
  22. box and select the style you are looking for. This will come up as, say,
  23. öò. Type an ö@ò after this Ö which stands for öany textò Ö and then
  24. press <return>. This will highlight the whole of the first piece of text
  25. with that style or effect. Unfortunately, the facility to replace that
  26. style with another style is not yet working. If you do want to do any
  27. search and replace on the style names, export the text, with styles, and
  28. then use another WP such as !Edit to do the searching and replacing
  29. before returning it to Impression.

  31. Å   Rogue effects Ö Someone sent me a file in which they had used a
  32. particular font which I did not have so when I loaded the file,
  33. Impression told me it was changing it to Trinity.medium. I did an edit-
  34. style and looked at all the style definitions to no avail. Eventually, I
  35. realised that it must have been used as an effect, so how was I to find
  36. it and eliminate it or change it to some font I did possess? Because the
  37. font had been changed to Trinity.medium (i.e. the BaseStyle font) I
  38. could not pick it out with a visual scan so the first idea was to change
  39. the BaseStyle to, say, Zapf.Dingbats so that anything which was in a
  40. different font was obviously an effect or a style. Unfortunately, this
  41. didnæt reveal the offending effect. At this point, I became convinced
  42. that I had a non-existent, un-removable effect, i.e. a bug in Impres
  43. sion. So I sent the offending file to CC who informed me that the
  44. particular effect WAS in the text and they also showed me how to locate
  45. it... as follows...

  47. (Actually, the reason that I couldnæt find the effect was that I had
  48. already gone through the document adding extra styles and had covered
  49. this rogue font-change effect with a font-change style of my own. In
  50. other words, the style, because it was applied later than the effect,
  51. took precedence.)

  53. Å   Finding effects Ö In the same way that you can find styles (see above)
  54. you can also find effects as long as you tell Impression that you want
  55. effects to be shown on the style menu. To do this, locate the file öUKò
  56. in the Impression öResourcesò directory. Load it into !Edit and find
  57. öCnf1:ò and change it to öCnf1:Eò Ö thatæs a one, not a letter ölò. Save
  58. the file and shut down and re-start Impression. You then will have
  59. effects on your style menus and search on {öeffectnameò }@, as explained
  60. above.

  62. Å   Fast search and replace Ö There are a couple of very useful keyboard
  63. short-cuts not documented in the manual which speed up the search and
  64. replace. When the ötext foundò box is on screen, <ctrl-R> does a
  65. öReplaceò and <ctrl-N> moves to the öNextò.

  67. Å   Keyboard short-cuts Ö Apart from the ones listed on pages 119ff of the
  68. Impression manual, here are a few more: (some are mentioned on the menu,
  69. but not in manual)

  73. <ctrl-shift-H> produces a bullet i.e. a öÅò.

  83. Å   Page number justification problems Ö Some of you may have had
  84. difficulty getting correct centring or right justification of page
  85. numbers on footers. This is corrected in version 2.09 Ö well, almost!
  86. The footers on right hand pages were wrong last month, when I was using
  87. version 2.05, (in fact I didnæt even notice!) and the footers on the
  88. left hand pages would have been wrong this month (with 2.09) if I had
  89. not found a way round it. If you try to have left aligned page number
  90. with a right tabbed piece of text, the text suffers a left shift. Iæve
  91. solved it for now by splitting the footer text into two separate frames,
  92. one left aligned and the other right aligned. Itæs messy, but it works.
