For inclusion in your Shareware series:
Zansi.sys is a replacement for Ansi.sys in MSDOS. It
is a driver which will speed up screen response when
you use your PC emulator. It will also work on most
PCs as well.
I have benchmarked the screen reponse using Zansi.sys,
and have found that with it the Arc's emulated screens
are actually faster than an 8 Mhz AT!
Not all DOS applications will respond with a quickening,
but those that generally will are those that use DOS in
writing to the screen.
As you can see from the documentation supplied with it,
Zansi is public domain.
Included with it are More.com and View.com, which both
use either Zansi.sys or Nansi.sys to write, using 'raw
mode', much faster to the screen than would normally be
possible. More.com can be used in place of the DOS 'type'
command, and View can be used just like a text editor,
in viewing files, but without the ability to actually
write. So you can do searches, page up and down, etc.
without having to use an editor to do so.
To install Zansi.sys, put it into your config.sys on
your boot up disc, whether that be your MSDOS floppy
system disc or your hard disc. The line to include in
config.sys could be, for example,
device=a:\zansi.sys (for floppies)
or
device=c:\dos\zansi.sys (for hard discs)
And then remember to put Zansi.sys in either your root
directory or DOS directory, as per above. Zansi.sys will
then be installed whenever you boot up MSDOS after
first running the emulation program.
For ease of sending, I have sent these DOS files as
Arc files, using !PCDir. Please remember to first
convert them back using !PCDir, or the translation
programs included on your MSDOS boot disc by Acorn.
Remember to rename ZANSI_SYS to ZANSI.SYS in DOS
when you convert the file, and VIEW_COM and MORE_COM,
to VIEW.COM and MORE.COM.
I have included a sample config.sys for your information.
Please note that any references to Nansi.sys are to
another utility, for which Zansi.sys is actually
faster. I have included it here, however, for
comparison and reference purposes.
