%CO:A,12,72%%C%%H2%Demo PipeDream getting going file
This file contains instructions to help you get going with the demo
version of PipeDream 4.
%C%%H2%How to read this file
Read this file before you start playing with PipeDream. You can scroll
through the document by using the up and down arrow keys, the Page Up
and Page Down keys or clicking in the scroll bar on the right hand
side of the window.
%C%%H2%Once PipeDream is loaded
PipeDream is loaded when the blue 4 icon is visible on the icon bar at
the bottom of your screen. To start a new window click the left button
of the mouse on the PipeDream icon. Investigate
Pressing the middle, or Menu button, of the mouse whilst the blue
pointer arrow is over a PipeDream window will give you the top-level
PipeDream menu.
Pressing the Menu button on the PipeDream icon gives you a further list
of options with which you may experiment. One of these is New
Document. This provides you with a list of Templates which you can use
to create new documents. For example if you want to create a
spreadsheet you may fint it easiest to start from the Numbers template.
%C%%H2%Help
A short help file is available by pressing the F1 key. This will help
you to get started.
%C%%H2%Once you have a new window
When you have a new window, you can start typing. To type text, as you
would in a letter, just type away. To enter a number into the
spreadsheet, press the F2 key, and type in your expression. When you
press RETURN, the result of the calculation will be displayed in the
slot.
Use the left and right buttons on the mouse to position the caret in a
slot.
%C%%H2%PipeDream commands
PipeDream has three ways of accepting commands:
1.
2.
3.
%C%%H2%Long and Short Menus
When you start PipeDream, the short menus are switched on. This makes
the menus clearer and more readable. To access the complete range of
PipeDream commands, select long menus by clicking the left button of
the mouse on the "Short Menus" option in the "Files" menu.
On the long menus, the function key equivalent of the commands is also
shown, if there is one. In PipeDream 4 the short menus are
configurable so if you prefer to have a different set of commands on
the short menus, you can do this.
%C%%H2%Fonts
PipeDream 4 can use either the system font, which this document is
using, or the RISC OS proportional fonts. To select a font, use the
Font command (Ctrl-PFG) on the Print menu. If the font selector shows
only system font then that is the only font that RISC OS has available
to it.
We strongly recommend that you do not try to use the old "bitmap" font
manager with PipeDream 4. If you want to use fonts we recommend that
you use the newer "outline" fonts and the font manager version 2.42 or
later. This is especially true for using PipeDream 4's charts which
can use system font but which is happier using Homerton font. If you
do not have the later font manager and some fonts your Acorn dealer
should be able to advise on the best ways to acquire them. The
official Acorn way to do it is to purchase the Acorn fonts disc. There
are other ways, one is to purchase Beebug's Ovation demo disc which
comes with a few fonts.
The only RISC OS fonts which are used in the examples are Trinity and
Homerton.
%C%%H2%Facilities not available
The demonstration version of PipeDream 4 has the spelling checker, file
saving, printing and searching disabled. Charts are overlayed with a
banner saying 'PipeDream 4 Demonstration version'.
The LOTUS 123 to PipeDream converter program, the PipeDream to
Impression converter and the Z88 filing system are not supplied on the
demonstration disk. The release copy of PipeDream 4 also includes many
data files which are not supplied on the demonstration disc.
%C%%H2%The PipeDream pack
The PipeDream pack includes:
%C%%H2%Example files
There are several example files in the "documents" directory on the
demonstration disk. You can load a PipeDream file into PipeDream by
double-clicking on the icon of the file. PipeDream files have the
PipeDream icon displayed by their side.
Experiment with the example files: these will give you an idea of some
of the different types of document you can create with PipeDream 4.
To investigate PipeDream 4's charts look at the Rainfall file and
follow the instructions given in it. After looking at this, try the
pfamily file to investigate penguin graphics.
%C%%H2%A final note
When using the demonstration version of PipeDream, please remember that
you don't have the documentation available. The manuals include a full
step-by-step tutorial and a large reference section. There is obviously
no space here to explain the finer features and facilities in PipeDream
- you will only get the full benefit by working with the manual, but
the demonstration should give you some idea of PipeDream's impressive
capabilities.

Via the RISCOS menu system.
Using the function keys. A function key card is supplied
with the real version of PipeDream. The initial function
key layout is:
%H4%Note:%H4% Users of earlier versions of PipeDream can install
the old function key layout by copying
!PipeDream.Cmdfiles.PD3keys to !PipeDream.key
Using CTRL key sequences. Alongside the commands in the
menus you will a sequence of letters: you can give the
command without using the menu system by holding down the
CTRL key, and, whilst it is held down, pressing the letters
shown. Delete word, for example, is CTRL-T.
