%C%Printing PipeLine Files

One of the other files in this directory is called something such as
[4PL9502]. It contains a brief description of the contents of other
directories on this disc. The 4PL indicates that this disc is
primarily for use with PipeDreamá4. The numbers 9502 indicate that the
disc is the PipeLine disc for the 2nd month of the year 1995.
%L%Smart Quotes and Ligatures
Some of the files on this disc contain smart quotes such as É & ö (you
can enter the first by holding down the <Alt> key and tapping the
number keys 1 4 4 on the numeric key pad). If your screen shows rather
strange characters and not smart quotes in the first line of this
paragraph then double click on the file [Standard] in this directory.
This will install a 'newer' version of the System font screen drivers
than you have in your ROMs. Ligatures such as ₧ and ƒ are used in
places instead of separate fi and fl characters. If your screen
display does not show the ligatures then double click on [Standard].
The reason why the smart quotes have appeared in some of these files is
that they originated in a different package (such as Impression Style
or FireWorkz) where smart quotes seemed more appropriate. These
characters may cause some problems when printing using PipeDream
printer drivers (see below) in that they might not translate to a
suitable printed character. If this happens to you then you can modify
the PipeDream Printer Driver file so that É is printed as ' and that
the other smart quotes and ligatures are translated appropriately.
Alternatively you can drag the PDCmdFil called [NoTopBit] into the file
you want to print and it will convert all the smart quotes to 'unsmart'
quotes and convert all the ligatures back to separate characters.
%L%Printing PipeLine Files
You can print out the files on this disc in one of two ways.
The first way of printing is to use PipeDream's own printer drivers.
This is fast because it uses the fonts resident within the printer. I
recommend it to you.
In PipeDream 4 the Printer type and PipeDream printer driver is saved
with the file. I have saved the Printer type as 'Parallel' and the
PipeDream printer driver as 'PipeLine' with every [ReadMe] file on this
disc. You can either select your own printer driver before printing as
described in the next paragraph but a simpler way is to make a copy of
your preferred printer driver and call it PipeLine.
You can select PipeDream's printer drivers through the Print menu. Use
<CtrláPD> (Printer Driver) to open the menu. Click the select (left)
mouse button on the arrows to the right of Printer type until the word
Parallel appears in the box. In the next row you will probably find
the name of a PipeDream printer driver file such as PipeLine.
Alternatively this is how you make a copy of your PipeDream printer
driver. Load any PipeDream file. Place the pointer in the file window
and execute <CtrláPGD>. A window called Edit printer driver will open.
Use the up and down arrows to select your preferred printer driver.
Click on the OK box. Place the pointer in the new window and click the
select (left) mouse button. Tap <F3> to open the Save dialogue window.
Change the name of the file to PipeLine and click on the OK box. A
copy of your preferred PipeDream printer driver is created with the
name PipeLine and is saved into your !PipeDream.PDrivers directory.
The page length has been set to 0 and the left margin to 4 characters
(see the Print - Page layout menu accessed with the key
short cut <CtrláPY>). Justify has been turned off (Files - Options
menu). The page width has been set to 72 characters (this just fits a
mode 12 screen). This set of options is suitable for most printers
using PipeDream printer drivers. If you have problems such as a very
narrow left margin or text spilling over the right hand side of the
paper, then you may have to adjust these values.
I do not recommend using RISCáOS printer drivers for printing out the
[ReadMe] files but, if you prefer RISC OS drivers you can use the
Printá-áPrinter font menu to select a font of your own choice. You
will probably have to reformat the text afterwards using the block
reformat command <CtrláEFB>. Printing is much slower using RISC OS
drivers such as the RISCáOSá2 !PrinterDM or RISCáOSá3's !Printers but,
if you have outline fonts, then you will get a more pleasant result.
Using RISCáOS printing you will probably find that a left margin
setting of 4 is too small (try 8 characters) and you will have to set
the page length to about 60 lines. You can change the left margin and
page length settings through the dialogue boxes in the Print - Page
layout menu; Justify may be turned on through the File - Options menu.
