  19. %L%What is PipeLine?
  20.  
  21. PipeLine is a User Group; it is mainly, but not exclusively, a support 
  22. service for Colton Software's PipeDream package.  It is a forum for 
  23. those want to share their knowledge, improve their techniques and 
  24. discover how others have done those things that might be considered 
  25. impossible with other packages!  Thanks to the recent reduction in 
  26. price of PipeDreamá4, the 'freebie' PipeDreamá3 and PipeDreamá4 
  27. packages and the reduced price of upgrading from PipeDreamá3 to 
  28. PipeDreamá4, the membership of PipeLine is still growing.
  29.  
  30. The 'support' which Colton Software can give to PipeDream users has 
  31. diminished since Robert Macmillan left them in the Summer of 1993.  
  32. With Robert went a great deal of expertise and knowledge about the 
  33. various uses of PipeDream.  Here at Abacus Training we are finding that 
  34. Colton Software are referring many users with PipeDream 'problems' 
  35. directly to us even if they are not subscribers to PipeLine!  Nearly 
  36. always we find that we, or one of our members, can help them - then we 
  37. do our best to persuade them to become members.

  39. The current version of PipeDreamá4 is 4.13.  In October 1993 I was told 
  40. by a senior member of Colton Software that, within a year, they would 
  41. be issuing an upgrade.  This is no longer the case; although I am still 
  42. trying to persuade Colton Software to upgrade PipeDreamá4, even if they 
  43. have to charge for it, in answer to my direct question they have 
  44. confirmed that there will be no more new versions of PipeDreamá4.  This 
  45. is sad because PipeDream has many features that Fireworkz doesn't.
  46.  
  47. When a supplier ceases to 'support' a product with upgrades then User 
  48. Groups become more important.  This too has contributed to the increase 
  49. in PipeLine membership.
  50.  
  51. Perhaps the most important benefit to members of the User Group is the 
  52. postal Technical Help service.  I regret that I'm not able to give a 
  53. telephone service; the reason is that I have a full time job as a 
  54. Lecturer at Swindon College so I'll probably not be at home if you 
  55. ring!  Anyway, if you send me your problem on disc then it does make 
  56. it much easier for me.

  58. The second benefit for members is that, each year subscribers to 
  59. PipeLine receive four discs which contain PipeDream applications 
  60. written for users by users.  The discs also contain articles which 
  61. might be of more general interest such as articles about RISCáOS, 
  62. booting, printing, viruses and the occasional review of packages we 
  63. think might interest you.

  66. What is ZLine? - What is FireLine? - What is ILine?
  67.  
  68. ZLine is another of our User Groups; in a similar way to that in which 
  69. PipeLine supports PipeDream, ZLine supports Colton Software's FireWorkz 
  70. integrated package.  FireWorkz includes Wordz the word processor, 
  71. Resultz the spreadsheet and Recordz the database.

  73. ILine is yet another of our User Groups; it supports users of 
  74. Impression Style and Impression Publisher.  The first disc was issued 
  75. in Januaryá1995; it was well received and, although (up to now) we have 
  76. advertised it only to members of our other user groups, membership of 
  77. ILine is growing rapidly.

  79. FireLine is another of our User Groups; it supports users of Fireworkz 
  80. for Windows on a PC.  We have put FireLine on hold until Fireworkz Pro 
  81. for Windows becomes available.  The earliest projected date for the 
  82. release of FireworkzáPro is June 1995.

  84. Since PipeLine, ZLine, ILine and FireLine subscriptions are the same 
  85. price, at any time you may convert the outstanding part of your 
  86. PipeLine subscription to one for ZLine, FireLine or ILine - or, if you 
  87. wish, you may subscribe to more than one of the user groups.

  89. Also, if you wish, you can convert any outstanding part of your ZLine 
  90. subscription to one for PipeLine discs - rather more subscribers than I 
  91. expected found that they prefer PipeDream to Fireworkz and have taken 
  92. up this option.  Now that Impression Style and Publisher exist I 
  93. believe that many of you PipeDream 'fans' will prefer the combination 
  94. of PipeDream and Style to Fireworkz.

  96. All of these developments auger well for the future of PipeLine.

  99. %L%What is our relationship with Colton Software?
  100.  
  101. Although we are completely independent of Colton Software we have an 
  102. excellent working relationship with them.  They will recommend us, our 
  103. user groups, our quarterly discs and our support service.

  107.  
  108. Yes!  Write to us with your hints, tips, criticisms, comments and 
  109. worked examples of using PipeDream.  If you believe that you have a 
  110. major contribution to make then let us know what it's about (so that 
  111. there isn't too much duplication) and we'll see where we go from there.

  113. It makes it easier for us to publish your comment (or your problems) if 
  114. you let us have it on disc.  If you send a disc then, if you can, 
  115. please include a self adhesive address label and return postage.  If 
  116. your contribution is published then you will receive a free copy of the 
  117. disc in which your contribution appears or, as is more often the case, 
  118. if you have paid in advance then we shall refund the disc price.

  121. %L%How do you find what you want?
  122.  
  123. Except for the first two files ([0thReadMe] and [1stReadMe]), the root 
  124. directory consists only of directories with descriptive names such as 
  125. Contents and OtherDiscs.  The Contents directory contains a file with 
  126. the same name as this disc which contains a description of the 
  127. contents.  I suggest that you open the Contents directory and read the 
  128. 'contents' file before you do much else.  Choose something which is of 
  129. interest to you and make a note of the directory name.

  131. In nearly every directory on this disc there is a [ReadMe] file - it 
  132. might be the only file in the directory.  Double click on the [ReadMe] 
  133. file to load it into PipeDream - it may be an article or it may contain 
  134. instructions about the use of the other files in that directory.

  136. To avoid screen display problems which arise if you don't have 
  137. particular fonts such as Acorn's Trinity, Beebug's Paladin or EFF's 
  138. French, all PipeLine's [ReadMe] files and nearly all the text files use 
  139. the System font.  A consequence of using the System font is that you 
  140. can print the [ReadMe] files quickly using a PipeDream printer driver.

  142. To print PipeDreamá4's charts you need RISCáOS printer drivers and to 
  143. print with RISCáOS drivers you need Acorn's outline fonts.  To make 
  144. these charts files available to the widest 'audience', for the present 
  145. at least, we are limiting the fonts used in charts to Acorn's Trinity, 
  146. Homerton and Corpus.

  151. The directory OtherDiscs contains contents files for other discs in the 
  152. PipeLine series which we can supply.  The OtherDiscs directory also 
  153. contains our current price list.

  156. %L%How did PipeLine start?
  157.  
  158. PipeLine started life in 1989 as a monthly column (called PipeLine) in 
  159. the Archive magazine.  I still write for Archive but under the heading
  160. of Gerald's Column.  In 1990, Robert Macmillan, one of Colton 
  161. Software's directors suggested that the material from the PipeLine 
  162. column should be made available to a wider readership.  With the 
  163. blessing of Paul Beverley (who runs that magazine) and with technical 
  164. support from Colton Software (the authors of PipeDream) I was 
  165. encouraged by Robert Macmillan to produce the PipeLine discs quarterly 
  166. for PipeDream users.  PipeLine rapidly became a User Group.

  168. Although it exists mainly to support Colton Software's PipeDream we do 
  169. not regard that as its only purpose.  We welcome contributions from 
  170. subscribers about the DeskTop, RISCáOS, printing, printer drivers, 
  171. Paint, DrawPlus, BASIC, multisync monitors, colour printers, general 
  172. reviews of other hardware and software, etc, indeed, anything which 
  173. subscribers may have in common or may wish to know about.
