AMIGA POWER Issue #25 coverdisk (.ADF/PAL) May 1993

This month's coverdisk is a real peach. For your delectation we've
got two incredibly happening demos. In fact, it's *so* happening that
the word on the street is that Take That have been spotted with AMIGA
POWER coverdisks. No, hang on -- that's wrong...
Introducing Disk 25...
ENTITY
Loriciel's Entity, the everyday tale of a powerful girlie and her
bid to save the world, has been on its way for a while now. And,
erm, here it is! And not only do we give you a whole level to play,
but some preview shots of the other levels as well. We're too kind,
really.
BEAVERS
Grandslam's Beavers which, apparently, is a platform game with, erm,
beavers in it, has to be quite the cutest thing we've seen since,
ooh, Rodland or something. Play a level for yourself, but don't
come running to us if it makes you cry.

ENTITY
Publisher: Loriciel
If you're the kind of person who reads things from the back to the
front, you'll already have seen the review of Loriciel's Entity on
pages 38 and 39 (or, indeed, 39 and 38) of this issue. But then you
probably wear your clothes upside down and talk to cheese plants as
well, so we're not going to discuss it with you. What we ARE going to
discuss is the whopping great playable level of the game that comes on
this month's coverdisk.
THE PLOT
Now might be a good time to correct a mistake we made in the actual
review that we've only just discovered. The Entity, you see, is a
girl. We don't mean it's soft, we mean it's female. This demonic
dude-ette from another dimension was imprisoned in a giant stone
monolith aeons ago by Milgram the Wise after leaving the fridge door
open or some other heinous crime, but now she's escaped. Whoah,
scary!
In the full game, you have to battle through five levels to reach
the only weapon which can kill her, Erinwhe's magic boomerang (look,
we're not making this up), but in our demo you only need to worry
about, well, killing lots of dinosaurs. Hurrah for that, eh?
THE GAMEPLAY
Nothing too tricky here. Run around, shoot dinosaurs, avoid hazards.
The main point of the level is to collect three parts of Bismuth's
Sceptre, for reasons which, er, we've forgotten. You'll find clues to
where the sceptre parts are located on parchments dotted around the
landscape (pull down on the joystick to read them), but you'll have to
study them very carefully for them to make any sense. The only other
important thing to look out for is Billy The Dreamer's wand, which,
when activated, will create extra, temporary pathways which lead to
useful pick-ups.
THE SIZE
Oooh, it's a whopper, missus. How big? We're talking 60 screens wide
by four screens tall, and by our (admittedly tenuous) grasp of
mathematics that's no less than 240 big screens of dinosaur-bashing
action and japery.

BEAVERS

It's been a while since we first had a look at this original (ie. it's
not a licence) platformer from Arc Developments, but it's looking
better and better as time goes on. In it you play a beaver (surprise!
surprise!) called Jethro, and your predictable mission is to collect a
load of stars, for reasons which will doubtless become apparent in the
finished plot. But hey -- these aren't just boring old ordinary
platform game stars, oh no. Some of them are sneaky stars, which'll
duck out of the way when you try to collect them -- your only chance
is to creep up on them in a thoroughly sly and underhand manner and
catch them by surprise. Tch, it's practically Operation Stealth,
innit?
THE SCENE
So that's it, really. Platform game, collect stars, occasionally creep
around a bit. Unfortunately, there's still all this space to fill, so
let's have some waffle, eh? To finish this particular demo level,
you'll have to make use of the log pulley transportation systems (or
lifts) which you'll find up in the branches of the trees. Using the
log pulley transportation system involves nothing more complicated
than finding the log pulley transportation system switches attached to
tree trunks throughout the stage, and pulling them (by pressing up on
the joystick). Pulling the log pulley transporation system switches
will make the log pulley transportation system work, and hence
transport you around the level. On logs.
tHE BAD GUYS
There are some bad guys in the game. Ordinarily you'd be able to kill
many of them with your spinning beaver tail attack, but, tragically,
all the baddies in this level are too tough for your tail -- the only
thing you can do with it in the demo stage is burst the balloons which
some of the enemies float around on. But do it anyway, 'cos it's fun.
THE OBJECTIVE
Apart from collecting the stars, there's one other thing you have to
do in order to complete the demo. Lying around somewhere you'll find
a hunter's raccoon hat. You'll need to use the log pulley
transportation system (which I think we've covered in sufficient depth
already) to get to it, but I'm afraid that's the only clue you're
getting on this one. Collect the hat and go to the exit, and you've
done it, guv. Good, as they say, luck.

EXTREME VIOLENCE
As promised, it's the long-awaited 'secret level' codes for last
month's shareware coverdisk frenzy, Extreme Violence. Just go to the
title screen (the one with all the power-ups on it) and type either
DUNE, TERMINATOR or LAWNMOWER, followed by the RETURN key. The voice
will go "Bingo!" if you've done it right, and you'll then start the
game with an intriguing range of automatic power-ups. Stay hungry!

Note: I couldn't get the Entity demo to load correctly. Runs peachy
when transferred back over to the Amiga side (and booted up in
PAL mode on an NTSC machine), so it's not a copy protection
issue. Course, the full game doesn't seem to run so hot under
emulation, either. Tch.
