  1. Installation and Use of the Universal Disc Structure
  2. ----------------------------------------------------

  4. Please read and understand the LICENCE document in this directory before
  5. proceeding.
  6.  
  7. This disc image is intended for use on a locally-booting system running RISC
  8. OS >=3.10. It is not suitable for use in booting discless RISC OS clients or
  9. NCs over a network connection.

  11. You will need approximately 42Mb of free space on your hard drive to perform
  12. the extraction and installation process as detailed below.
  13.  
  14. This disc image is derived from the image currently installed on J233 Risc
  15. PCs at manufacture time; various materials have been removed from the J233
  16. image to create this build, however placeholder directories have been added
  17. where appropriate.

  19. Installation
  20. ------------
  21. The following steps constitute a cast-iron method of installing the
  22. structure, which should work on just about any RISC OS >=3.1 system with
  23. enough spare hard disc capacity. Other methods of installation exist for
  24. users who don't mind moving subhierarchies around piecemeal according to the
  25. layout of their individual hard discs.
  26.  
  27. Make a new directory in the root of your hard disc; copy the BOOT/ARC archive
  28. from the CD into it.
  29.  
  30. Extract the contents of BOOT/ARC archive now resident on your hard disc into
  31. this new directory, using !SparkFS (if you have it), or !SparkPlug.

  33. If you do not have a copy of !SparkPlug, examine either ftp.acorn.co.uk or
  34. the copy of it elsewhere on this CD; you should find a BASIC program called
  35. dearchiv.bas (or similar) inside the riscos/releases directory. *settype this
  36. program to type BASIC if it does not have a BASIC icon associated with it
  37. already in your filer window, and run it. This BASIC program will proceed to
  38. extract a copy of !SparkPlug into your currently selected directory.

  40. Make another new directory on your hard disc. Move everything from the root
  41. directory of your hard disc, other than the directory which now contains the
  42. new structure, into it.
  43.  
  44. Reboot.
  45.  
  46. You should now find yourself running the new !Boot; your machine will start
  47. up as though it is an out-of-the-box J233.
  48.  
  49. Reconfigure your system using the !Configure application built into !Boot;
  50. double-click on !Boot to run it. Further configuration documentation can be
  51. found in the Manuals directory.

  53. You will subsequently need to move the applications you use at startup time
  54. into the new !Boot.Choices.Boot.PreDesk / !Boot.Choices.Boot.Tasks
  55. directories, and / or edit your !Boot.Choices.Boot.Tasks.!Boot file
  56. accordingly.
