Dear Sir
Lister, Converter and Cassinlay
In your April issue the letter from Elvin Rose struck
a chord with me as I have been frustrated by the above
three programs by Paul F Johnson.
The lack of WBModules is not the only problem with Paul
Johnson's programs for those of us with older machines. He
avowedly produces his programs on an RPC700 and makes use
of all its facilities.
He claims to provide 256 colour sprites but these are
incomplete in the versions of his programs I have culled
from Acorn User.
This means that his programs will not work as published on
(say) an A3010 and his templates are not appropriate for
those of us with those machines either as he works in a
screen mode which 3010s cannot match and uses outline fonts
in his windows.
That is the problem, now the solution:
1. Process his sprites through ChangeFSI into either mode
12 (16 colour) or mode 15 (256 colour). I have done this
and copies are on the enclosed disc.
2. For CassInlay it is necessary to work in modes 35 or 36
to get the full window displayed.
3. There is also a PD program called DeskFonts written by
Rob Davison a New Zealander which is available from APDL on
B184 and on CDROM PD1. This enables the use of outline
fonts on early machines. It allows the system font to be
replaced in the desktop and in this case improves the
appearance of the windows. This is also on the enclosed
disc.
It would be worth Acorn User's trouble to try out their
cover disc offerings on older machines for there must be
many of these around.
Yours faithfully
C W Seager
