  4. Have you ever wished you had a simple program that would secretly
  5. store things like PIN numbers and other private bits of information
  6. you can so easily forget?
  7.  
  8. Well, here it is!
  9.  
  10. I hope it is so easy to use that it needs very little explanation, but
  11. just in case ...
  12.  
  13. When you double-click on the Secrets icon, the application loads onto
  14. the icon bar in the normal way. Click on this icon to open the main
  15. window.
  16.  
  17. The Secrets window has two writeable icons. The first allows for a
  18. description of the item, and the second for the secret data itself.
  19. Buttons below these icons marked <back> and <next> allow you to move
  20. one record at a time backwards and forwards through the items. The
  21. buttons either side move you to the first or last record respectively.
  22. You can save up to 50 records in any given file.

  24. When you enter new data, it is not recorded unless you click on the
  25. <add> button. To delete the record currently displayed, click on
  26. <delete>.

  28. None of this data is saved, of course, until you click on <save data>.
  29. Clicking on this button opens the encoding window in which you enter
  30. your code of up to 8 characters. Press return when you have done so,
  31. and a Check Code window opens. Repeat the code to ensure you have
  32. entered it correctly. If you press <RETURN> this time nothing will
  33. happen. This is to ensure you do not overwrite existing data by
  34. mistake; you must chose to auto save, or to create a new file in some
  35. other location.

  37. Auto save will give your data a standard name, and save it to the
  38. application directory. If you prefer to store it away from the
  39. application, wish to save a backup, or if you have more than one
  40. Secrets file, then click on <enter filename> to save in the standard
  41. manner. A fictitious file is included with the password 'acornusr'.

  43. To recover your data, you must, of course, enter the same code word.
  44. Click on <load data>, enter the code, and if it was auto saved press
  45. <RETURN> and the data will be loaded and displayed. If it was not auto
  46. saved, then enter the code but this time click on <enter filename>.
  47. Now drag the file onto the Load window (or enter the full pathname if
  48. you really must), and the file loads. The code is not saved in any way
  49. with the data. If you enter the wrong code, it will just load
  50. jibberish.

  52. The encryption system is simple, and you cannot corrupt data that has
  53. already been saved. It is saved in coded form, and will only be
  54. decoded as it is loaded. It is nevertheless sufficiently secure to
  55. make it extremely difficult to crack provided you don't use a very
  56. obvious code. Obviously any system is only as good as the code word
  57. used - don't use your partner's name for example, nor your telephone
  58. number!

  61. and distributed provided due acknowledgement is given and no files are
  62. altered or removed from the application. The author cannot however
  63. take responsibility for any loss of data or damage to other
  64. applications arising from the use of Secrets, however they may occur.
