  4. To install Messenger, copy the !Messenger application directory to the
  5. required location on your hard disk (e.g. with all your other Internet
  6. applications) and copy !Manuals to some location where it will be
  7. automatically seen by the filer each time you use your machine (e.g. in
  8. !Boot.Resources).
  9.  
  10. Please see the accompanying documentation for more information on installing
  11. and using Messenger. This can be accessed by selecting Help from the filer
  12. application sub-menu when the !Messenger directory is selected, or by using
  13. the Help... option on Messenger's icon bar menu.

  15. Messenger Pro
  16. =============
  17.  
  18. Messenger Pro is a commercial version of the existing freeware Messenger
  19. mail and news client. It consists of an enhanced version of Messenger, a
  20. new database engine and IMAP/NNTP support. It remains compatible with all
  21. popular Internet suites, adding support for Voyager for the first time,
  22. and provides all the features currently provided by the freeware version,
  23. as well as offering the following benefits:

  25. * Faster Processing
  26.  
  27. Messenger Pro features a new offline database manager which offers a speed 
  28. advantage over Newsbase in all areas, but particularly during debatch and
  29. expire operations.
  30.  
  31. In addition, much of the processing that takes place when viewing
  32. messages is now performed in memory rather than via disc, hence making
  33. overall usage appear much faster.
  34.  
  35. * Easier to Configure
  36.  
  37. Messenger Pro is designed to be easier to configure than any existing mail
  38. and news software. The installation process will ask for a bare minimum of
  39. details and will then configure itself, obtaining information from your
  40. existing software. Those users who have been intimidated by Newsbase's
  41. user interface in the past will find Messenger Pro's own database
  42. considerably easier to use.
  43.  
  44. Much effort has also been made to retain Messenger's multi-user support
  45. whilst at the same time removing some of the complexity of multi-user
  46. configuration. Messenger Pro defaults to a single user installation where
  47. the user installing it is given full system administration privileges
  48. without having to create the user himself. The user is then automatically
  49. subscribed to all groups, removing the need to subscribe once for the news
  50. feed and again for himself, as was the case in previous versions.

  52. * IMAP/NNTP Support
  53.  
  54. Support is provided for reading mail and news online via a connection to a
  55. separate mail and news server, thus removing the requirement to store all
  56. mail and news locally. The standard IMAP mail and NNTP news protocols are
  57. used to do this.
  58.  
  59. Messenger Pro can be configured for offline or online use and maintains
  60. separate configurations for each, allowing easy switching between them.
  61.  
  62. * Voyager Support
  63.  
  64. For the first time, Messenger now supports the Voyager Internet Suite, the
  65. software used by the majority of Argonet users. This is by means of a
  66. dedicated Voyager transport which enables the two pieces of software to
  67. work together.

  69. * More Powerful and Faster Search Facilities
  70.  
  71. The freeware version of Messenger uses a third party application,
  72. NewsFind, to perform message searches. Messenger Pro removes this
  73. dependency and performs all searches itself, utilising direct access to
  74. the database to considerably speed up the process.
  75.  
  76. Messenger Pro also offers more flexible search criteria to be specified,
  77. searching on up to four headers or in the body, together with size and
  78. date specifications. Attachments may also be easily found.
  79.  
  80. In addition, local searches for text in displayed messages may also be
  81. performed.

  83. * Reduced Disc Usage
  84.  
  85. Messenger Pro uses a more efficient technique of storing messages which 
  86. considerably reduces the amount of disc space wasted, and hence the
  87. overall amount of space used. In addition, all messages are held in
  88. compressed form and only decompressed when needed.
  89.  
  90. * Better Attachment Support
  91.  
  92. Messenger already has comprehensive support for attachments, but Messenger
  93. Pro extends this to enable identification of those messages with
  94. attachments from the group viewer, removing the need to open each message
  95. first.

  97. A strip attachments option has also been added which allows attachments to
  98. be deleted; useful if you want to archive your mail but don't want to keep
  99. lots of large files around.
  100.  
  101. When forwarding messages, attachments are now automatically copied across
  102. to the new message, removing the need to do this manually. Attachments are
  103. also now supported in news postings, although warnings are given for those
  104. groups where this would be deemed inappropriate.
  105.  
  106. * Queue Editing
  107.  
  108. Messenger Pro features full queue editing facilities; a task that was
  109. previously delegated to the third party QEdit application. This means that
  110. the outgoing mail and news queues can be treated just like another group,
  111. using the same user interface for displaying and manipulating queued
  112. messages. Messages are then edited using the existing editing facilities
  113. with which the user will already be familiar.

  115. * Editing of Stored Messages
  116.  
  117. Messages may now be edited and saved back to the database, allowing you to
  118. make permanent changes to the headers or the body, e.g. to correct a
  119. mislabelled Subject header, or to annotate messages.
  120.  
  121. Messages may also be used as the basis of an outgoing edit session, which
  122. is useful for correcting misaddressed mail or for sending another copy of
  123. a message which didn't get through the first time.

  125. * Compliance with the Good Net-Keeping Seal of Approval
  126.  
  127. Messenger Pro is the first newsreader on the RISC OS platform to be
  128. awarded the Good Net-Keeping Seal of Approval. This is a tough set of
  129. guidelines which requires that news posting software generate articles
  130. that properly adhere to Internet standards, and provide adequate
  131. protection for the user so that his postings don't annoy other users by
  132. exhibiting common mistakes made by beginners.

  134. Messenger Pro also complies with the latest draft of the USEFOR working
  135. group, who are currently defining the new standard for the format of news
  136. messages.

  138. * Provides More Information
  139.  
  140. Messenger now displays more header information in its message windows so
  141. you can easily see who else received a particular message, and where
  142. replies/follow ups will go to.
  143.  
  144. * Safer Deletes
  145.  
  146. Deletions are now deferred, which means that messages are marked for
  147. deletion and only removed when the user closes or refreshes the current
  148. group window. This also allows the user to change his mind and undelete
  149. them before this happens.

  151. Messenger Pro also has full support for a per-user waste basket, which
  152. automatically catches all deleted messages in the event that they may be
  153. required later or were deleted by accident. Messages are then
  154. automatically deleted from the waste basket after a configurable period of
  155. time.

  157. * A Tidier User Interface
  158.  
  159. Messenger's user interface has been redesigned with new sprites giving it
  160. a fresher and more professional appearance. The separate mailer,
  161. newsreader and folder windows of the original have been replaced with two
  162. windows which can display any type of group: one for the groups the user
  163. will use every day, and another for archiving or for groups that aren't
  164. accessed very often. These groups are now sorted to ensure that more
  165. focussed groups, and hence those that are more important, appear at the
  166. top of the display for easier access.

  168. Extra buttons have also been added to make commonly used operations such
  169. as folder filing much easier.

  171. * Improved Reply Tracking
  172.  
  173. Owing to bugs in Newsbase, Messenger's reply tracking often didn't work
  174. very well. Now, when used with the new database engine, a thread can be
  175. followed right back to the root message, by choosing earlier messages from
  176. a menu. Thus with two mouse clicks you can read the message that triggered
  177. the reply you're currently reading, and step back through the discussion
  178. one message or many messages at a time, regardless of where those messages
  179. are stored.

  181. * Better Handling of Important Messages
  182.  
  183. Important messages can now be marked as requiring attention, which will
  184. highlight them in group viewers and ensure that Messenger won't let you
  185. forget that they exist.

  187. * More Flexible Arrival Notification
  188.  
  189. Messenger now allows you to assign a sample to a person that will be
  190. played when mail from that person is received, or you may instead have the
  191. names of people who send you mail read out as you receive them (if you
  192. have the speech software). Notification of new mail via the chime can also
  193. be enabled on a per-group basis.

  195. In addition, Messenger's group list windows will now indicate which groups
  196. have had new arrivals since you last opened them.

  198. * Improved Keyboard Support
  199.  
  200. Messenger now has more keyboard shortcuts and tries harder to keep the
  201. input focus when it closes its windows, thus making it much easier to
  202. control via the keyboard.
  203.  
  204. * More Reliable
  205.  
  206. Messenger Pro employs better error recovery procedures, so in the event of
  207. a corrupt overview or configuration file, the file is automatically
  208. repaired or copied from a backup. All critical configuration files are
  209. backed up as a matter of course.

  211. * RISC OS 4 Compatible
  212.  
  213. Messenger Pro is fully RISC OS 4 compatible.
