  47.  1) RISCOS Ltd Millennium compliance statement
  48.  
  49.   In order to be Millennium compliant, RISC OS must conform to a set of
  50.   requirements laid down by the British Standards Institute. Acorn initially
  51.   made a statement of compliance which can be found at

  54.   To comply with this, two OS Word calls have changed slightly in their

  70.   The mailing list for users of Acorn's Browse web browser, announced in the
  71.   last issue, has moved to an automatic majordomo list, meaning that it will
  72.   be much quicker to process commands and distribute messages.

  81.  4) Comic Relief auction and Kosovo CD update
  82.  
  83.   Paul Johnson reports that the Acorn related projects he has organised to
  84.   raise money for various causes have collected almost GBP10000 between
  85.   them.
  86.  
  87.   The next event planned is to raise money for Steve Turnbull's MENCAP bike
  88.   ride. This will be bigger than the other two, and some of the prizes will
  89.   blow you away! It is in an advanced stage of planning between Paul and
  90.   Steve, ANS will keep you up to date with developments.

  98.  5) The GCC for RISC OS initiative
  99.  
  100.   Lack of modern compiler technology was often cited as one of the reasons
  101.   for the lack of software on RISC OS. With the latest version of GCC, the
  102.   latest C++ features and compiler optimisations will be available to the
  103.   RISC OS community.
  104.  
  105.   To ensure the future development of GCC, the GNU C/C++/Fortran/Pascal
  106.   compiler suite, the GCC for RISC OS initiative was founded. In order to
  107.   get the latest GCC ported, a StrongARM Risc PC was donated to the original
  108.   GCC 2.7.2.1 porter, Nick Burrett. To finance this RiscPC, there are still
  109.   donations needed - please contact organiser Steffen Huber if you are
  110.   willing to donate any money to help.

  116.  6) Equinox BBS back online
  117.  
  118.   Paul Vigay's BBS, Equinox, is back online again after the death of the
  119.   serial port in his A5000. Now connected to a 28.8Kbps modem, it is one of
  120.   the few Acorn BBSs still online.
  121.  
  122.   Equinox is online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 01705 871531 (8N1) and
  123.   registration is free. It hosts several thousand Acorn files, in addition
  124.   to UFO and paranormal, and suppressed government information files.

  129.  7) RISC OS 4 installation in the "north-west"
  130.  
  131.   The Manchester Acorn User Group is north-west England's largest RISC OS
  132.   user group, and is more than happy to offer advice and assistance to users
  133.   who need help with RISC OS 4 upgrades.

  148.  
  149.   Teletext cards with Teletext+ software are now available at the new low
  150.   price of GBP125 from Octopus Systems. These are Computer Concepts teletext
  151.   cards (no longer available from CC) supplied with additional advanced
  152.   Teletext+ software.

  154.   Teletext+ software displays teletext pages on the computer screen but
  155.   works much faster than a television as pages and sub-pages are cached for
  156.   fast access.

  238.  5) Important Announcement from Circle Software
  239.  
  240.   John Skingley of Circle Software posted the following on August 4th:

  242.     I am very sorry to announce that Circle Software has ceased trading,
  243.     as of 31st July 1999.
  244.  
  245.     I regret this decision, which has been made for purely personal
  246.     reasons, and has nothing to do with the demise of Acorn. In fact, I
  247.     expect the RISC OS market to remain buoyant as RO-4 becomes freely
  248.     available, and pick up during the Autumn when several new machines
  249.     will be launched.

  251.     Upgrades to Impact-3 version 3.13 may still be obtained by returning
  252.     master discs with five pounds p & p, for a limited period.

  268.  1) New Family developer wanted
  269.  
  270.   Family is a useful RISC OS application for editing and printing family
  271.   trees, developed by Denis Howe. The latest version is 2.18
  272.   (http://foldoc.doc.ic.ac.uk/acorn/denis/).

  274.   Sadly, Denis's development of Family has virtually stopped due to
  275.   a family, FOLDOC (http://foldoc.doc.ic.ac.uk/), work
  276.   (http://www.linklaters.com/), games (http://www.dungeonkeeper.com/),
  277.   AI (http://www.clickshop.com/pdkb/pdkb.html), and sleep
  278.   (http://www.newtechpub.com/phantom/articles/guide.html)
  279.   taking priority over Family.

  281.   Denis is therefore seeking a committed programmer to take over
  282.   development. The code is complex but well commented, and it is just a
  283.   BASIC WIMP program so no special tools are required. There is some work in
  284.   progress, a long to-do list and a steady stream of suggestions from many
  285.   enthusiastic users.

  290.  2) SSHProxy: A secure shell client for RISC OS
  291.  
  292.   SSHProxy is the first and only secure shell client for RISC OS, allowing
  293.   connection to remote computers using the SSH 1.5 protocol. This protocol
  294.   is similar to telnet in some ways, but encrypts all data sent through the
  295.   network - telnet sends all data 'in the clear', which leaves passwords and
  296.   other sensitive data visible for anyone listening on the network to
  297.   intercept.
  298.  
  299.   SSHProxy will work alongside, rather than instead of, your favourite
  300.   telnet client. This means you do not have to get used to the quirks of yet
  301.   another terminal emulator, and it can provide this facility to a number of
  302.   machines connected via secure links (eg tamper proof serial cables).

  304.   Currently, SSHProxy is in an early stage of development, and is of alpha
  305.   quality. The core functionality works, although there is a fair amount of
  306.   work still to do. It is being released as developer Theo Markettos will
  307.   not have much time to work on it in the near future, and is looking for
  308.   help with the project. It may also be useful to some people in its current
  309.   form.

  315.  3) CVS: a RISC OS port of a version control system
  316.  
  317.   John Tytgat has ported a popular version control system to RISC OS.
  318.   It is called CVS and more information about CVS itself can be found at:

  321.   Using CVS, you can record the history of your source files (eg source code
  322.   of your programs, or contents of your web site). The CVS database can be
  323.   stored on your local harddisc or accessed via network. Source code of many
  324.   popular programs (like Zap) can be accessed from your RISC OS machine via
  325.   the Internet using this CVS port.
  326.  
  327.   The CVS program is normally a command line utility but a simple GUI
  328.   interface has also been provided.

  334.  4) SiteMatch - Beta release
  335.  
  336.   SiteMatch is a utility to synchronise your web site with a local copy. It
  337.   is not an FTP program and will not upload or update your site for you,
  338.   although it will tell you what files have been added, changed or deleted
  339.   since you last updated your site.

  341.   This is a beta release, which still requires some work, although it is
  342.   stable in its current form. Feedback and suggestions are welcome.

  470.  3) Essex Acorn User Group - August meeting
  471.  
  472.   This month's regular EAUG meeting will be at 7.45pm on Tuesday 10th
  473.   August 1999.

  475.   On this occasion EAUG hope to see some of the more interesting features of
  476.   Ovation Pro. This presentation, by the editor of the group's newsletter,
  477.   is particularly appropriate following the good news that this important
  478.   application is now owned by its author, David Pilling, and further
  479.   development is already in hand following months of uncertainty resulting
  480.   from Beebug's marketing shift.
  481.  
  482.   Ordinary membership increased in May (first time for years) from GBP15 to
  483.   GBP16. Student and Family membership remains at GBP10 and GBP20,
  484.   respectively (unchanged).

  486.   Non-member visitors are now charged GBP2 for the evening, but for this
  487.   they receive a copy of the current newsletter, and will also be sent a
  488.   copy of the next newsletter, in time for the following meeting.

  490.   Meetings are held in the centre of Essex: The Library in Witham Town
  491.   Centre, starting at 7.45pm. There is some off-road parking, plus
