  29.   Due to an increased workload and other commitments, it is sad to say that
  30.   unfortunately I have had to leave the ANS team.

  32.   James Sears, our Sub Editor has kindly taken over as Editor.

  34.   With OVER 700 members in just over a year, ANS is growing like never
  35.   before. Please support it and make it even more of a success.

  49.  1) RISC OS 4 technical briefing
  50.  
  51.   Barry Tompson <barry@WestonOnTrent.freeserve.co.uk> attended a meeting on
  52.   19th March, between RISCOS Ltd., dealers, developers, and user group
  53.   committee members. He has kindly provided ANS with notes on the meeting,
  54.   on which the following is based.
  55.  
  56.   Key improvements of RISC OS 4:
  57.     * Wimp: nested windows; keyboard navigation of menus, using cursor keys.
  58.     * Filing system: new filer with support unlimited number of files per
  59.       directory, file names up to 200 characters (limited by Wimp message
  60.       system); support for Mac disks; CDFS2.
  61.     * Misc desktop changes: confirmation is required to close down the
  62.       computer; fades when changing screen sizes; Boot to be enhanced;
  63.       incorporation of 3D patch, font blending, background textures.
  64.     * Printers: there has been little progress bin this area over the past
  65.       two years. A fair amount of work needs to done in this area by the
  66.       new programming team. Printers will not be in ROM.
  67.  
  68.   Other interesting points:
  69.    * Online manual will probably be in StrongHelp format. (Why not HTML?)
  70.    * Acorn has not attempted to document RISC OS 4, ie no PRM.
  71.    * Easy to use dial up Internet will be supplied as standard.
  72.    * RISCOS Ltd. will not get access to Acorn's Browse, Webserve, or Java.

  74.   The upgrade will be standard ROMs with accompanying CDROM. RISC OS 4 will
  75.   cost GBP120.00 including VAT, and should be available in May.
  76.  
  77.   After RISC OS 4 is released development will continue to remove dependency
  78.   on custom hardware, such as VIDC and IOMD chips, and to change to a 32bit
  79.   program counter to allow the use of new ARM processors (eg ARM10, SA2).

  81.   Also Richard Jozefowski <richard@millipede.co.uk>, MD of Millipede, talked
  82.   about his thoughts for a replacement RiscPC motherboard. Millipede are
  83.   trying to get a demo ready for the Wakefield show, and to be ready to ship
  84.   by the end of the year. Key points:
  85.     * Mechanically compatible with RiscPC.
  86.     * Up to 512MB SDRAM, no VRAM. 66MHz memory clock.
  87.     * Video monitor output 1800x1400 full colour.
  88.     * 256bit (4 times the bandwidth of Phoebe).
  89.     * StrongARM variant soldered to mother board.
  90.     * Enhanced IDE interface; fast Ethernet.
  91.     * Retention of present podule bus, no PCI or USB support.
  92.     * No custom chips (ie IMOD and VIDC), two FPGAs.
  93.     * Audio/Visual expansion connector.
  94.     * Commercial quality video out. MIDI in/out.
  95.     * Support for 16MHz x86 PC cards.

  97.   During the meeting Laurie van Someren, MD of Aleph One and secretary of
  98.   RISCOS Ltd., commented that 45000 x86 PC cards had been sold, and these
  99.   can only have been fitted into RiscPCs. It begs the question how many
  100.   RiscPCs are there in the field?

  103.  2) Arctic BBS closes
  104.  
  105.   Steve Pursey has announced that Arctic BBS (+44 181 9031309) will close at
  106.   the end of next month. Arctic BBS will have been online on an Archimedes
  107.   or RiscPC for over 6 years, from 1st Feb 1993 to 30th Apr 1999.

  122.  4) Acorn Expo 99

  124.   The Big Ben Club, the national Dutch Acorn User Group, is now preparing
  125.   for the Acorn Expo 99. The show offers exhibitions/promotions by various
  126.   companies, including Dutch, German and British Acorn dealers, 
  127.   demonstrations by club members, etc.

  139.   Micro Laser Designs have started a mail list discussion group for anyone
  140.   interested in the use of Acorn computers for printing & publishing. To

  149.  1) Update for Canon BJC7x00 drivers from Spacetech
  150.  
  151.   The Spacetech PhotoReal and plain paper driver for BJC 7x00 series
  152.   printers has been updated to provide additional functions, originally only
  153.   available via the Microsoft Windows driver, within the RISC OS
  154.   environment.
  155.  
  156.   The BJC-7000/7100 is able to handle a wide range of media, and can be
  157.   instructed to print at several different speed vs quality ratios. These
  158.   and other new features cannot be supported adequately by the RISC OS
  159.   printer manager, so a separate Extended Printer Control application has
  160.   been provided. This application also provides the necessary tools for
  161.   maintaining the printer, eg aligning the print heads, which must be done
  162.   whenever a cartridge is installed.

  164.   The upgrade will replace the existing PhotoReal driver for BJC7x00
  165.   printers for all future purchasers. Existing users will receive a free
  166.   upgrade. Sample printouts are available on request.

  173.   Jaffa Software are pleased to announce that the latest version of the
  174.   successful Desktop application environment, WimpWorks.

  177.   of exciting new plugins (WEMs) to be released in the near future.

  195.   Only available as an upgrade from 2.82 at the moment, this should be
  196.   treated as beta. It can now edit the compacted template format with shared
  197.   indirected strings as used by recent versions of Zap (but it can only save
  198.   in the old format with duplicated strings). It also has some ESG clashes
  199.   fixed in its own MultiIcon dialogue box.

  216.   Organizer version 1.36 is now available. Features of v1.36 can be seen at:

  219.     * Tone Dialling through speakers or modem.
  220.     * Printing.
  221.     * Improved Searching to include whole database, and a nicer interface.

  234.   Versions 1.09 of FTPc, a free Internet FTP client, is now available from

  245.  4) PsiFS - New freeware Psion<->Acorn connectivity package
  246.  
  247.   The first release of PsiFS, a freeware Psion<->Acorn connectivity package,
  248.   is now available.
  249.  
  250.   PsiFS is a RISC OS file system that communicates with a remote EPOC device
  251.   via the Psion Link Protocol (PLP). Hence, there is no software to install
  252.   or run on the remote device. Files can be manipulated as if they were on a
  253.   local harddisc, albeit a slow one, so copying is simply a matter of
  254.   dragging icons between filer windows.
  255.  
  256.   PsiFS supports any EPOC16 or EPOC32 device with a suitable serial link,
  257.   including:
  258.     * Psion Series 3/3a/3c/3mx
  259.     * Psion Series 5
  260.     * Psion Siena
  261.     * Acorn PocketBook I/II

  269.  5) StrongHelp 2.70 released
  270.  
  271.   The major (and indeed only) change in StrongHelp 2.70 is that you can
  272.   export a stronghelp page as a draw file. Once you have exported one or
  273.   more pages to a Drawfile you can then print it.

  275.   This is also Guttorm Vik's final StrongHelp release ever, as he is
  276.   preparing to leave or at least stop developing for RISC OS, so he has
  277.   uploaded the source too. If anyone fancies doing some more work on it they
  278.   are free to do so.

  283.  6) PDF version 0.73a
  284.  
  285.   The latest version of PDF is now at 0.73a. This version has some small
  286.   features added like: document and encryption information. The biggest
  287.   improvement is the rendering of bitmaps. This is as fast as it was in
  288.   version 0.72.

  290.   The sources of PDF are now also available. If there are any programmers

  339.  3) WACG Meeting - 7th April

  341.   The next Wakefield Acorn Computer user group meeting is on Wednesday 7th
  342.   April, and will feature the first visit by Jonathan Duddington of Speak
  343.   fame. He will be show visitors his Pluto email/text database package as
  344.   well as Speak.

  358.  4) Arche ACORN User Club meeting

  360.   The Arche ACORN User Club is a user group, which organizes a meeting in
  361.   Essen, Germany, every 2 months. Members and guests can exchange their
  362.   experiences and problems with the Acorn Archimedes and RiscPC.

  364.   Every Acorn user is invited to the next meeting on Saturday 10th April,
  365.   starting at 1pm. The meeting is held at: Haus des Sports (Hauptbad),
