  72.   AcornSite have added a free ads page for people to use to buy and sell
  73.   Acorn hardware and software. It uses a guestbook to display the free ads,
  74.   so your ad will appear as soon as you fill in the form.

  76.   Also the site of the month has been updated using the votes submitted last
  77.   month for users' favourite Acorn computer related site, so take a look at

  80.   The AcornSite Site Update is a way of letting people know about updates to
  81.   your site. Simply fill in the Site Update form at AcornSite when you want

  90.  2) Evolution Demo Competition announcement
  91.  
  92.   Following the shock news from Acorn the Rev 98 demo competition was left
  93.   without a venue (Acorn World) and without the main prize (a Phoebe).
  94.   Despite these set backs the organisers and competitors have got together
  95.   and have created a rescue plan - The Evolution Demo Competition.
  96.  
  97.   The competition will go ahead as planned, but will no longer be a party
  98.   event. All entry rules are the same as for Rev 98, but the deadline is now
  99.   1st December 98. Entries submitted by this date will be placed on a cover
  100.   CD and will form part of a Demo Special in the February issue of Acorn
  101.   User. Readers will then be able to vote for their favourite demo.

  103.   The CD will also feature the Classic Demos Archive, a large collection of
  104.   demos from the last 10 years, as well as a Techie section with source code
  105.   and mini fx contributed by coders.

  114.  3) Acorn StrongARM development boards for the Digital TV market
  115.  
  116.   Acorn recently announced that it is delivering development boards based on
  117.   Intel's StrongARM technology for the digital TV market. Acorn is expanding
  118.   its design services programme for StrongARM reference designs, as well as
  119.   adding to their broadband Digital Video Receiving devices roadmap. Acorn
  120.   is currently designing low-level system components and software for new
  121.   StrongARM digital TV applications.

  123.   Stan Boland, CEO Acorn Group said, "We are pleased to be working with
  124.   Intel as part of our ongoing commitment to StrongARM technology. With its
  125.   high performance and low power, the StrongARM architecture is ideally
  126.   suited to deliver the capabilities required for the emerging digital TV

  173.   ChiBER is one possible future route for RISC OS computers. The ChiBER
  174.   system will consist of a RISC OS compatible operating system (ChiOS)
  175.   running on a StrongARM processor on a standard PCI card, which can slot
  176.   into an off the shelf PC.

  181.  4) Cerilica and Astute Graphics loss of data

  183.   The main hard disk of a key computer used by Astute Graphics and Cerilica
  184.   Limited (Project Avante) has failed, resulting in the loss of all recent
  185.   e-mails back to the start of September. People who have contacted Cerilica
  186.   or Astute Graphics during this time should e-mail again.

  209.   Jaffa Software have just released v2.23 of their successful application
  210.   development tool, WimpWorks.

  212.   WimpWorks allows anyone with a knowledge of BBC BASIC to produce powerful
  213.   multitasking applications on any machine with RISC OS 3.10 or above.

  227.  1) Infestation
  228.  
  229.   Infestation is a new top view, four player game by David Stubbs. It is
  230.   sort of a cross between moon/marsquake, bubble-bobble and a few other
  231.   games.
  232.  
  233.   The basic idea of the game is that you must fight your way through a
  234.   series of levels destroying all the evil nasties on the way. You have
  235.   bombs, targeting missiles, mines, and a rather clever device which allows
  236.   you to spawn your own 'good' nasties.
  237.  
  238.   The final game will have 20 creatures with varying abilities. Each has 8
  239.   levels of intelligence so even old creatures can be suddenly dangerous.
  240.   There will be 100 levels in four different graphics themes, plus a
  241.   selection of head to head battle levels. There will also be a level editor
  242.   for creating your own masterpieces.

  244.   All this will fit on, and play from, the smallest of floppy disks and run
  245.   in less that 1MB of memory on even the lowliest (RISC OS 3) machines.

  251.  2) Squeak Smalltalk v2.20 now available for RiscPC
  252.  
  253.   Squeak version 2.20 is now available for the Acorn RiscPC with RISC OS 3.7
  254.   or later. See http://sumeru.stanford.edu/tim/pooters/squeak.html for

  257.   The download is about 5MB and expands to about 10MB on disc. You need
  258.   5/6MB of free RAM to run it, though it should be possible to configure it
  259.   to run down to a 4MB machine with some work.

  261.   This latest version has added a web browser, mail reader and web server,
  262.   but still lacks sound and serial port access. Offers of help most
  263.   gratefully received.

  265.   Squeak is a public domain Smalltalk system, the original object oriented
  266.   programming language and environment, from which most OSs have learnt
  267.   about windowing, pixel displays, menus and so on. You will need to read
  268.   about Smalltalk to make best use of it, since it is likely to be quite
  269.   unfamiliar to you at first.

  272.  3) BBC ticker 0.23e

  274.   The BBC News Online Ticker app (!Ticker) has now reached version 0.23e,
  275.   download from http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Lights/7724/ticker.zip

  277.   Ticker is a small application which provides scrolling news and weather on
  278.   the desktop. The stories come directly from the BBC WWW server, which is
  279.   updated regularly. Each item of news can be clicked on to open the full
  280.   story in your web browser. It is fully configurable to allow you to view
  281.   only the headlines in which you are interested. !Ticker requires an
  282.   Internet connection.

  322.   Translator 8.00 has been totally rewritten from scratch, in C++ and
  323.   assembly code. The highlights:
  324.     * Translator is now a proper editor
  325.     * It is fully up to date with the latest hardware and RISC OS versions
  326.     * Contains most features of the 'old' Translator and Creator & GreyEdit
  327.     * Multiple images may be loaded
  328.     * Employs its own 'virtual memory' for image storage
  329.     * Size and number of images only limited by hard disk
  330.     * Support for selections
  331.     * Proper scaling algorithms
  332.     * Numerous other improvements

  334.   Translator is a pixel image viewer, processor and converter, all in one.
  335.   It is able to read and write a wide variety of pixel image formats, while

  348.  8) AcornICQ Updates

  350.   A new version of AcornICQ, a RISC OS implementation of the ICQ Internet
  351.   person to person chat software from Mirabilis <http://www.mirabilis.com/>,

  354.   New features include a small patch to play an 'Uh-oh!' sound when you
  355.   receive a new message and a small fix that should prevent the machine
  356.   lockup problems some people have experienced.

  361.  9) Speak Freely port
  362.  
  363.   A RISC OS port of Speak Freely, a program to send and receive audio over a
  364.   network, is now available.
  365.  
  366.   This is only a first release, which lacks some of the features of the Unix
  367.   and Windows clients. The only way to send audio is to drag a sample (Sun
  368.   Audio format, .au) to the window, real time audio coming from a sampler

  375.   Torrey's New Topical Textbook
  376.   =============================
  377.   An index of 630 topics with over 30,000 Bible references. Topics are often
  378.   split into sub-sections with Bible references listed alongside. It has
  379.   been prepared as a PD HolyBible resource by Brian Scott. A review of this
  380.   product will be in the forthcoming Christian Acorn User Group Newsletter.

  384.   Easton's Bible Dictionary

  386.   Version 2 of this very popular resource is now available, and includes
  387.   improvements such as many more cross-links between articles and articles
  388.   tagged to relevant Bible verses. Purchasers of this resource are asked to
  389.   make a donation to their favourite charity in gratitude for the tremendous
  390.   amount of work done on this resource by Brian Scott. This resource comes
  391.   on 2HD or 4DD disks.

  409.  11) Bubble help goes PD: maintainer sought
  410.  
  411.   Miles Sabin, author of Bubble help, is in the process of disposing of his
  412.   Acorn hardware which means he will no longer be able to maintain the RISC
  413.   OS Help replacement. Rather than abandoning the code it will be released
  414.   into the public domain.
  415.  
  416.   The author is looking for a volunteer who is willing to take on
  417.   responsibility for the source and can host a download site for the
  418.   binaries, source and documentation.
  419.  
  420.   A prospective maintainer's job is likely to be fairly straightforward:
  421.   Bubble help has been used by many thousands of users for several years
  422.   now, without any bug reports or feature requests since about 1995. Bubble
  423.   help 'just works' and, apparently, does everything anyone wants. As to the
  424.   sources, BH is 100% ARM code, built using Acorns ARM assembler, reasonably
  425.   well structured and documented, split over several hundred source files.
