  35. You may all be wondering why you are receiving this issue of ANS later than
  36. usual.  Well, due to a lot of competition matters being planned recently,
  37. both myself and Richard spending time away, me moving to London etc., and a
  38. series of technical hitches of near biblical proportions (!), we've simply
  39. /had/ to bring ANS out a little later than usual, as well as the fantastic
  40. news on the Competition.

  42. You may also notice that this issue has not been sent out by me, as my Psion
  43. is still not formatting e-mails 100%.  Since we like to provide ANS readers
  44. with an easily readable newsletter, Richard is sending out ANS until further
  45. notice.  BUT, I still edit it.  He just presses "send"! ;-)

  85. Directors at Acorn Group, the Cambridge-based onetime educational computer
  86. maker, are conducting a sweeping strategic review which could lead to the
  87. sale of some or all of its remaining businesses.
  88.  
  89. The company, which has been restructuring since 1990, said the high risk
  90. profile of its business meant that some or all would be better developed
  91. outside the public market "whether in the hands of their management or under
  92. third party ownership".
  93.  
  94. Stan Boland, who took over as chief executive after the resignation in June
  95. of David Lee, said the group would seek to focus on settop boxes for digital
  96. televisions and computers in which the memory is separated from the terminal.
  97. "Within two years we should be able to clean up the business but we will be
  98. open to offers along the way," he said.
  99.  
  100. No talks were under way over the disposal of peripheral activities, such as
  101. the Rise PC business and Xemplar, the educational computing joint venture
  102. with Apple. Acorn also announced plans to shed its remaining stake in ARM
  103. Holdings, the microchip designer it spun off in 1990.
  104.  
  105. Acorn's 26 per cent holding could be worth as much as UKP 130m, more than
  106. double the market capitalisation of Acorn. Possible bidders are rumoured to
  107. include Intel and Motorola, the US chipmakers.
  108.  
  109. Mr Boland said Acorn had come to be viewed as an investment vehicle for those
  110. seeking an interest in ARM. "Many shareholders would prefer to hold shares
  111. directly in ARM rather than indirectly," he said. "We need to find a way of
  112. uncoupling this investment, possibly by distributing the stock to our
  113. shareholders, in a tax efficient manner."
  114.  
  115. During the half year to June 30, a UKP 14.2m exceptional gain from the sale
  116. of 2.8m shares in ARM at flotation provided some respite from deepening
  117. interim losses. Pre-tax profits of UKP 9.5m compared with losses last time of
  118. UKP 1.14m. But the operating loss widened from UKP lm to UKP 5.6m.
  119.  
  120. Group turnover fell from UKP 14.2m to UKP 5.3m.
  121.  
  122. Sales of the group's Rise PC computers fell from UKP 8.5m to UKP 3m —
  123. depressed by weak demand and the expected launch of a new model.
  124.  
  125. Revenue from consultancy and licensing slumped from UKP 5.6m to UKP 2.3m,
  126. after the loss of a consultancy contract with Oracle's NCI affiliate.
  127. Development costs relating to Rise PC2 totalled UKP lm and UKP 700,000 of
  128. capitalised development expenses were written off.

  130. Analysts were disappointed by the lack of detailed proposals in the
  131. statement. "We were looking for some definitive steer, particularly with
  132. regard to the ARM stock," said Patrick Yau at Nomura.

  134. The shares, which peaked in 1996 at more than 300p, edged down a further 3.5p
  135. to l06.5p.

  187. 4) Alastair France visits New Zealand
  188.  
  189. Educational Software & Devices (ESD) in conjunction with Acorn Computers UK,
  190. held a nationwide NC roadshow in June.  This was a big success and now is the
  191. time for Acorn to grace New Zealand with their presence once more.
  192.  
  193. Acorn UK are sending out a well known UK figure in the form of Alastair
  194. France, Acorn's recently appointed NC Sales Manager, who will be touring New
  195. Zealand this August, along with Chris France of ESD.
  196.  
  197. At each location, a demonstration lasting up to half an hour will show NCs
  198. (Network Computers) running off an NT 4.0 server showing the running of RISC
  199. OS and Windows applications.  An explanation of NCs and their place in
  200. education will be given, after which people will be able to ask any
  201. questions.
  202.  
  203. Unfortunately it is unlikely that Alastair will be able to bring Acorn's new
  204. Phoebe, as the design team are presently waiting for some chips to be
  205. fabricated and are not enthusiastic about releasing machines out of their
  206. sight until this happens!

  235.  
  236. Some new pages have been added to the 'TechWriter Tips' site.

  238. These were prompted by the release of new versions (4.10) of TW/EW Pro,
  239. which now have extended capability to import/export Word files and HTML.  The
  240. new pages give detailed explanations of what version 4.10 can do in these
  241. areas.  They also describe some of the new capabilities which have more
  242. general uses.

  263. 6) Project Sunflower
  264.  
  265. Project Sunflower is a new project for Acorn computers running RISC OS 3.1/NC
  266. OS 1.0 or greater.  Its aim is to rejuvenate the Acorn games scene,
  267. especially freeware games.  They would all like to see more free games, and
  268. this is what Project Sunflower is all about.  The first stage is to create a
  269. module ('Sunflower') to manage aspects common to all games, this will use
  270. 'helpers' to plot objects on the screen and to play music (QTM could be such
  271. a helper).  Stage two is to develop a games DDE (Desktop Development
  272. Environment), so novice programmers, and even those with no programming
  273. knowledge at all, can make high quality games.  A free gfx/sfx library will
  274. be set up to assist people in the hardest part of game design - playability
  275. and user interface.  A Project Sunflower mailing list will be set up very

  526. 1) Delirium Version 2 Released
  527.  
  528. Delirium is a Screen Saver from coding group Kulture, using dramatic
  529. demo-style effects.
  530.  
  531. Delirium is designed specifically for high-spec computers, with many effects
  532. using full 24 bit colour.  A RiscPC with 2MB of VRAM and a StrongARM is
  533. recommended, although many effects will work (albeit a little slower), on
  534. lower spec. machines.

  558. variables that control the encryption process, and so is very secure.

  569. 3) IbarPatch 1.10 
  570.  
  571. The latest version of IbarPatch (v1.10), is now available.  IbarPatch is a
  572. replacement iconbar for RISC OS, and the new version contains a large array
  573. of options for customising the iconbar's appearance.  It can also patch the
  574. Pinboard module to take into account the changed iconbar height (and, as a
  575. bonus, change the Pinboard's background colour).

  577. While it is mainly a superficial change, IbarPatch does have some practical
  578. benefits.  It can save screen space, and cut down on scrolling if you have a
  579. lot of iconbar icons.  It also doesn't flicker like the WIMP's iconbar.

  614. ThermIIC is the main software item accompanying a series of articles
  615. appearing in Acorn Archimedes World.  Using DS1624 IIC thermometers, you may
  616. measure and log up to eight temperatures to a resolution of 0.03125 degrees.

  700. straight to the software author's web pages, so that you can download the
  701. latest versions of their software.
