  38. my Psion 5 e-mail program made a mess of the ANS header.

  120. The ICQ pages have been fully redesigned, splitting the site into many
  121. smaller pages so if you're just looking for the latest version of mICQ you

  134. 1) iSV Products support interruption
  135.  
  136. Due to a long term programming contract, the iSV Products offices will be
  137. shut from the afternoon of August the 6th.  They will re-open on Monday the
  138. 24th of August.

  141. email will be replied to during this period.

  144. 2) New touchpad from Stuart Tyrrell Developments
  145.  
  146. Stuart Tyrrell Developments have announced the immediate availability of
  147. their new "touchpad" input device.
  148.  
  149. The touchpad is a mouse replacement, similar to pads found on some portable
  150. computers, which may be operated with either a pen-style stylus (supplied),
  151. or the tip of a finger.  It is an excellent desk space saver, having a
  152. footprint of just 110mm x 120mm, and is provided with a cushioned wrist
  153. support pad (150mm x 250mm) for comfortable prolonged use.
  154.  
  155. The touchpad supports "tap-gestures", which enable clicking, double-clicking,
  156. and dragging operations to be performed using the pad alone, without pressing
  157. buttons.
  158.  
  159. The SSTD touchpad may be used with all RISC OS machines, via their PS2Mouse
  160. or PS2Mouse+ adapters.  These adapters allow PS/2 devices to be used with
  161. Acorn machines through the standard mouse port. PS2Mouse+ is additionally
  162. fitted with a "through" port which enables the standard Acorn mouse to remain
  163. connected.  The touchpad may be connected directly to A7000 series machines,
  164. and drivers are provided for these computers.

  166. It costs 34.95 ukp, or just 29.95 ukp when purchased at the same time as
  167. PS2Mouse or PS2Mouse+.  PS2Mouse costs 24.95 ukp and PS2Mouse+ costs

  185. 3) Linked lists in WimpWorks
  186.  
  187. Jaffa Software have uploaded a new article continuing the series of
  188. application notes on programming WimpWorks to their web site at:

  193. them, implementing them and using them.

  195. Although aimed at users of WimpWorks, the information is not that specific
  196. and may serve as a useful example to anybody interested in linked lists (one

  205.  
  206. Uniqueway are now planning the 4th Edition of the RISC Disc CD-ROM.

  208. As with previous editions they welcome any software, shareware/freeware/PD
  209. and commercial demos.  If you want to promote your software or your company
  210. then let them know.  There is no charge for commercial promotions on the CD,
  211. and all private contributors will receive a free copy of the final CD.

  214. may be limited at that time, the more likely date is just before Christmas to
  215. give everyone a chance to make any necessary changes to their software in

  225. 5) Abuse for RiscOS now available from RCI
  226.  
  227. The top arcade action game, Abuse is now available from RCI.
  228.  
  229. Some of you may have played the cut down demo which was floating around on
  230. the net last Christmas, but now the full commercial version has been
  231. released, with all the "bells and whistles":
  232.  
  233.   - Lots of additional levels, with many much larger than the originals
  234.   - An awesome array of weaponary, including beam weapons, flamestrikes,
  235.     and missiles
  236.   - Loads of new monsters and graphics
  237.   - Extra powerups, including a jetpack
  238.   - RISC OS version supports up to 1024x768, and desktop play
  239.   - Desktop level editor included, with RISC OS menus and windows, and
  240.     full manual
  241.   - Full sound and (MIDI) music, with additional effects over the original
  242.   - Multi-language support for English, French and German
  243.   - Support for add-on levels and total conversions
  244.   - Stunning lighting and palette effects
  245.   - 4 skill levels, and many additional traps, and tough new enemies
  246.   - Huge full-screen explosions ;->

  248. Abuse is best described as a cross between Aliens, Doom and Flashback - a
  249. hugely atmospheric 2D shooter, with masses of insane weaponry, and massive
  250. explosions.  Interactive scenery gives way to bonus sections, packed with
  251. extra goodies.

  253. Abuse is priced at 25ukp, and requires an 8Mb RiscPC to run.  It comes on
  254. several high-density discs, and requires 10Mb of hard disc space.

  261. 6) Browse Notes from Octopus Systems
  262.  
  263. To complement their popular Java page, Octopus Systems have now added some
  264. useful notes on Browse to their website:

  269. Browse now includes the HTTPS protocol, which enables Acorn users to access
  270. secure sites that are commonly used for banking transactions and credit card
  271. orders.  This is an important feature which is only available in Browse, so
  272. it seems likely that many Fresco users will use Browse alongside Fresco.

  274. The notes explain HTTPS in more detail, and also explain how to set up Fresco
  275. and Browse to work through WebServe.

  282. 7) New releases from Skullsoft
  283.  
  284. Skullsoft have released a new version of JPEGTrans (v1.15) and a new version
  285. of their shareware game Arya: The Dragon's Quest (v1.04).

  294. Arya: The Dragon's Quest
  295. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  296. Arya: The Dragon's Quest is a shareware graphical/text adventure costing only
  297. 6.50 ukp to register.  It has pictures to add to the atmosphere of the game
  298. along with a few interactive puzzles that must be solved along the way.  It
  299. comprises over 320 locations, characters you can talk to, and who move around
  300. independently.  The new version updates the toolbar graphics so that it looks
  301. much better than in previous versions.  Some simple CD control options have
  302. also been added to allow music CDs to be controlled easily from within the
  303. game.
  304.  
  305. An unregistered version (without pictures) can be downloaded from the
  306. Skullsoft website (630k).  The pictures can be downloaded separately, or not
  307. at all.  The unregistered version represents only about a third of the game.
  308. Registering will give you access to the whole game, including more
  309. interactive puzzles and location pictures.  There is also a 32,000 colour
  310. version of the full game available on registration.  See the website for more
  311. information.

  313. A patch to upgrade the previous unregistered version (1.03) to 1.04 is also
  314. available (170k).
  315.  
  316. Registered users can contact Skullsoft by email or snail mail (giving their
  317. registration number) for details on how to upgrade to the new version.

  319. JPEGTrans
  320. ~~~~~~~~~
  321. This is a frontend for the 'Jpegtran' utility.  It allows you to create
  322. progressive and/or optimised JPEGs from JPEGs.  This new version (1.15) fixes
  323. a few bugs, and also adds the ability to automatically create a RAM disc on
  324. start up if it is set up to use that instead of the !Scrap directory.

  327. 8) TraxSequencer
  328.  
  329. Following the release and initial success of TraxSequencer, the multi-track
  330. object-oriented sequencing package for Acorn 32-bit computers, work on the
  331. next version is well under way.  Adding to TraxSequencer's already impressive
  332. range of features, such as:
  333.  
  334.   * Flexible, object-oriented song structure
  335.   * Playback with real time effects
  336.   * Powerful phrase editors
  337.   * Studio clock
  338.   * Intuitive user interface
  339.  
  340.   (And so many more, but I don't have the time to write them all out! Ed.)

  357.  
  358. Alsystems have announced the release of their Parallel Zip PLUS driver.  It
  359. has many features including:

  387. 1) AntUtils v1.11
  388.  
  389. AntUtils v1.11 is now available for download from:

  393. A few minor bugs have been fixed since v1.10, and a major new feature has
  394. also been implemented:

  396. AntUtils will now automatically create an HTML index page, containing a table
  397. of thumbnail images, for any directory containing image files.  This allows
  398. you to use your favourite web browser to view your image files.
  399.  
  400. A number of options are available, such as including a background image, how
  401. many thumbnails across the page, the size of each thumbnail, as well as
  402. whether each image has it's own link to the 'actual size' image for rapid
  403. viewing.

  406. 2) WebGet
  407.  
  408. WebGet is an application that allows you to queue web pages to be
  409. subsequently downloaded, and can also optionally download images and frames,
  410. and follow links within the pages - all are user configurable when you
  411. request the URL to be fetched.
  412.  
  413. WebGet also has a mode where it will capture URLs broadcast by mail/news
  414. readers (for example, when a URL in a news post is double clicked on), which
  415. can then be fetched later.
  416.  
  417. Once WebGet has fetched a set of pages, it will go through them rewriting any
  418. links within the pages so they can be browsed locally.
  419.  
  420. All pages transferred and errors that occur during a fetch are written to a
  421. HTML log file which is automatically displayed at the end of a fetch.
  422.  
  423. The pages themselves are stored using Richard Atterer's raFS, inside an raFS
  424. disc within the main application - !raFS 1.13 is included inside the WebGet
  425. archive.

  452. 4) CDViewer 1.00 beta 2
  453.  
  454. At long last, the new version of CDViewer is out!
  455.  
  456. For those of you who don't know, CDViewer is a replacement for Acorn's
  457. CDFSFiler.  It provides a built in CD player with all the usual functions, it
  458. will recognize CDs as soon as they are put in the drive, and lots more.
  459.

  470. 5) Dreamscape and ObeyExtend - new versions
  471.  
  472. The latest release of Dreamscape, version 1.20, is now available.
  473.  
  474. Dreamscape is a C++ class library for RISC OS, and includes classes for most
  475. Toolbox objects and gadgets, as well as for file transfers and rendering
  476. graphics amongst other things.
  477.  
  478. Some components are usable from C, such as the Wimp/Toolbox event handling
  479. libraries, which are better than those provided with Acorn C/C++ and are
  480. worth using even if you don't use the C++ classes.
  481.  
  482. Dreamscape can be compiled and used with Acorn's C++ compiler. 
  483. Unfortunately, it isn't possible to use it entirely with free tools yet,
  484. since to write Toolbox applications you will need a resource editor, Acorn's
  485. ResEd being the only one at present.

  492. ObeyExtend is a module which extends the Obey module so that Obey files
  493. starting with #!foo are passed to command `foo' instead, Unix-style.

  495. cfollow is an alternative to Obey written in C, and allows command lines of
  496. over 256 characters, as well as providing some Unix shell-like features and
  497. allowing interactive use.

  522. 7) Change of WinEd's licence

  524. WinEd is now freeware, but users are encouraged to send an amount equivalent
  525. to the previous registration fee, instead of it being compulsory.

  527. The source code is also available under the GNU Public Licence.

  529. Registered users of version 2.81 need not "upgrade" to 2.82 - the only
  530. difference is the removal of the registration code!

  543. mICQ, a free ICQ client written by Angelo Melis, is now in version 0.07.

  545. ICQ shows you when friends are online and allows you to send and receive
  546. instant messages.  mICQ for RiscOS is compatible with versions on other
  547. platforms, so you can message your PC friends easily.

  584. 2) Arche Acorn User Club
  585.  
  586. The Arche Acorn User Club is a user group which organizes a meeting in Essen,
  587. Germany, every 2 months.  Members and guests can meet and exchange their
  588. experiences and problems with the Acorn Archimedes and Risc PC.  All Acorn
  589. uses are invited to the next meeting on Saturday 8th August, at 1pm.  The

  609. 3) SARC - IRC
  610.  
  611. The Suffolk Acorn Risc Club (SARC) have announced that, starting on Tuesday
  612. 1st September 1998, they will be operating a weekly IRC chat session on the
  613. WolfChat server:

  617. The aim of the project is to provide the means for individuals and members of
  618. clubs who use Acorn computers to meet online and discuss topics of mutual
  619. interest.  To develop the project, SARC will be working in association with
  620. the Welwyn & Hatfield Computer Group (WHCG).

  622. Unlike existing channels such as #acorn and #argonet which appear to cater
  623. primarily for social chat, the new #SARC and #WHCC channels will be devoted
  624. to serious discussion aimed at establishing and maintaining interaction
  625. between the various clubs and individuals who are users of Acorn machines.
  626. To that end, SARC and WHCG hope to arrange for "special guests" to come on
  627. line to talk, and answer questions about their hardware/software products.

  629. To launch the project, and start the ball rolling, they have arranged for
  630. Paul Vigay (author of !AntUtils and other applications) to be the first
  631. guest, and it is hoped that many Acorn users will join in.
