Editorial
=========
Welcome to another issue of ANS. Unfortunately, there has ben a lack of
news items being sent in, and therefore it is smaller than it has been. Many
of you who are subscribed work for Acorn companies, or produce programs for
the Acorn. As soon as you have updates or have an interesting piece of
news, please send it to us. You can do this by sending e-mail to
ans@acornusers.org
[Please consult the website for submission guidelines - WebMaster]
There is a great amount of Acorn news which is not posted in c.s.s.a or
other places like this. This can sometimes be small news items, eg. a new
release of a popular PD program. We want ALL Acorn news items. Don't worry
if they are small or big, or may have already been sent in. Send them in,
and let other people benefit.
When I sent out a small e-mail about my mail server being changed, I had
about 20 e-mails bounced back to me. PLEASE, when you change your e-mail
address, inform ANS. It is not bad having a small e-mail bounced back, but
having 20 copies of ANS bounced back which can be as large as 20k can be
slightly annoying! ;-) Please remember to help us, so we can help you.
Please keep putting ANS links on your websites. Special thanks must go to
Norwich Computer Services. They put an ANS link on their website, and many
registrations have come through that.
[Thanks also to everyone on the Archive team for the 'plug' in the April
issue! - WebMaster]
The report of the RPCII meeting of the BAUG is certainly very interesting.
Enjoy this issue, and we hope by next issue, people will send in many news
items, making ANS the place to find Acorn News on the 'net!
Thanks,
Eytan Abrahams,
Editor

SmallRTV a RiscTV - TV only front end
-------------------------------------
SmallRTV is a TV only front end for Irlam Instruments RiscTV card. It is
currently at an early stage and has only been tested on the developer's
system - so this is also a call to find people to beta test this program.
Currently SmallRTV provides access to all 40 channels, audio and video
controls. The main window automatically resizes itself to the size of the
current screen mode. SmallRTV currently only requires 40K of RAM, and
doesn't eat up large numbers of NULL polls as the RiscTV application seems
too.
To try out SmallRTV you can download it from:
http://www.ukc.ac.uk/php/lptw1/ or http://www.brighteyes.u-net.com/
The archive contains details on how to send your ideas and bug reports etc.
to me, and hopefully SmallRTV will develop into a fully featured TV front end
program.
Bubble Impact now available in the UK
--------------------------------------
Owl-Art Un-Ltd. have now acquired the UK distribution rights for "Bubble
Impact" by the Moving Pixels team. This means that UK users can buy the game
without having to worry about changing their money into German Deutschmarks,
or about sending cash through the post.
Bubble Impact is a fast moving arcade-style game. You must clear the screen
of bubbles by firing extra coloured bubbles up to the top of the screen. If
there are more than two of any colour bubbles adjacent to each other they
will explode and fall off the bottom of the screen. The more bubbles you can
cause to fall down, the more you score!
Bubble Impact has been improved to give faster game play and a new
"Challenge" game-mode. The updated demo game is available to download from
the Acorn Arcade website at:
http://www.acornarcade.com/
The full version of the game, which has 100 levels, more background graphics,
saveable hi-scores and a two-player (human vs. human) mode is available from
Owl-Art Un-Ltd. by sending a cheque or postal order for ukp4.50, payable to
"A.M.Conroy", to:
Owl-Art Un-Ltd.

Please state whether you have downloaded the demo version (which can then be
unlocked), or whether you require the full game to be sent on disc.
Statement from Sheridan Williams - Managing Director of BEEBUG Limited
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Since 1982 BEEBUG has always reacted quickly to a changing market. 1998
is no different from the many previous years when we have restructured.
RISC User
---------
RISC User magazine continues, and under the helm of Richard Hallas improves
and matures. Sarah Shrive continues to do a splendid job as Production
Manager. Distribution has changed to a new agency. The magazine is now only
identified by its volume and issue number. Subscribers will continue to
receive 10 issues per year roughly monthly.
Retail
------
The operation has been streamlined, and is now under the management of Andrew
Read. We have dropped products that sell in very small quantities and are
available elsewhere. Higher selling products are now more competitively
priced. We now sell many products cheaper than high street outlets. We
continue to provide one year's written support on all products we sell
including computer systems. Our support is where we score highly compared to
larger box-shifters.
Hours are 9-5pm.
We continue to sell and support PCs as well as Acorns as we have done for
many years.
Shop
----
This will be closed from 27 March, and will not re-open. Personal callers are
welcome at our rear entrance (off Blandford Road) any day except Saturday. It
is advisable to confirm by phone.
Networks
--------
This area of our operation has been expanded significantly. BEEBUG are
experts in multi-platform networks running Acorns and PCs through an NT
server. We can install AUN Level 4 and Access for Acorn-only networks. We
provide a complete solution, supplying Acorn computers, PCs, and can install
the cabling including fibre-optic links to external buildings. We can
integrate Internet/Intranet and Email into our network design.
Software
--------
We are completely committed to continuing the development of Ovation Pro.
Sleuth 3 (OCR) is under development although no release date has been
finalised. There will be an upgrade path for users of Sleuth 2.
Summary
-------
As you can see BEEBUG has "down-sized" in some areas, and expanded in others.
We are confident that customers find that this restructure gives them a far
better service. BEEBUG are one of the longest surviving microcomputer
companies having been in business for over 15 years, and fully intend to
remain on the scene for a long time to come.

CDFSFiler replacement
---------------------
PEP Associates have announced the first beta release of their latest
product, CDFSFiler. This application has been designed as a drop-in
replacement for Acorn's CDFSFiler, whilst providing additional functionality
at the same time:
* Better support for mixed-mode CD-ROMs (i.e., access to both data
and audio)
* Sophisticated control over audio playback, not limited to just drive 0
* Ability to share audio CD catalogue information with SmartCD+ users
* Local caching of files retrieved from CD-ROM to provide better
performance with applications such as encyclopedias and other
data-intensive products
* Direct control over VirtuaCD drives
* Easy to use configuration front-end
* Support for sharing CD-ROM drives through ShareFS
* Support for mounting and dismounting CD-Net drives
[Please note that the last two features are not currently available in
the beta release]
The application dynamically loads code accessed by the user, thus minimising
the amount of memory used.
The audio playback control provides the usual features (stop, play, pause,
next track, previous track, fast forward, fast rewind) plus the ability to
play introductory snippets from tracks, play tracks in a random order or play
tracks in an order defined by you.
One of the design goals of the product has been to make the most of what
the user wants from the computer, so some of the more esoteric "audio"
features such as tape inlays have not been included.
The beta can be downloaded free of charge from the web site:
http://www.pep-assoc.co.uk/
The software can be used until the end of May.
PD/Shareware News
=================
dBoxTools
---------
dBoxTools 0.00d has been uploaded to the ARMage web site. As implied by
the version number, this is still very much a beta release of an incomplete
implementation. However, there is enough done for it to be useful, so it is
being made available. You can find it at:
http://www.armage.demon.co.uk/software/dB000d.arc
It does for the toolbox what FrontEnd does for templates. Actually, it does
rather a lot more that that. It will be useful with both WIMP applications
and command line programs.
The archive contains the program, the manual and the source. It can be used
freely, but please read the copyright information in the manual.
Acorn Filetype Program Updates
------------------------------
The following programs have been updated:
TypeInfo v1.71 - massive filetype database, nearly 1000 filetypes supported.
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/4119/typeinfo.htm
TypeFind v2.10 - superb filetype analyser, that guesses a filetype from the
file's contents. More than 200 types supported, taken up by myself after Ben
Schofield let the project drop, and so is now freeware not shareware.
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/4119/typefind.htm
MapIt v1.3 - DOS extension to Acorn filetype convertor, more than 200 types
supported.
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Park/4119/mapit.htm
All 3 have major new features, including TypeFind and MapIt's ability to
access TypeInfo's vast database.
Superb Sega Master System emulator released
-------------------------------------------
You can find the new "Miracle" SMS emulator at:
http://www.willothewisp.demon.co.uk/SMS/
Release of ARpM
---------------
ARpM (A Road performance Model) is now available at:
http://www.armage.demon.co.uk/software/ARpM/ARpM.htm
ARpM allows detailed examination of vehicle performance, as affected by the
engine torque-rpm, transmission ratios, final drive ratio, frontal area, tyre
size and so on.
It provides 'on-road' performance prediction accounting for acceleration
through the gears, cruise at speed etc, to predict performance versus time,
and fuel consumption versus time.
All output data should be easily loaded into a spreadsheet for further
examination and Tau style files are provided to enable Draw files to be
produced.
ARpM is in its early stages, but should be usable. If you are interested
how various vehicle parameters affect performance then you should give it a
try. The web page gives a good explanation, in fact it is the current !Help
file.
DMPA
-----
DMPA, the MPEG layer-3 audio player, has been updated. it now runs very fast.
You can find it at:
http://stekt.oulu.fi/~osi/
bascat
------
Version 1.2 of bascat, a BBC BASIC file viewer for UNIX, has just been
released. Download it from:
ftp://ftp.barnet.ac.uk/pub/Acorn/bascat-1.2.tar.gz
bascat features:
* Optional line numbering
* Optional keyword highlighting
* Output to default or customisable pager
* Use as a filter
bascat is Copyright (c) Matthew Wilcox and Mark Wooding. It may be
freely redistributed under the terms of the GNU General Public Licence.
Great Things are planned for version 1.3 including syntax colouring,
use of ncurses 4.2 instead of termcap, and possibly tokenising. But don't
hold your breath!
DeHackEd RiscOS port for Doom
-----------------------------
R-Comp Interactive is pleased to announce the availability of a freely
downloadable port of DeHackEd, the Doom executable editor. You can download
this from the RCI web site:
http://www.rcomp.co.uk/
You can find DeHackEd in the downloads section of the Leisure pages.
DeHackEd will only work with the official RiscOS version of Acorn Doom,
available from RCI and all good dealers. Please note that RCI have no plans
to facilitate its use with illegal or pirate releases of Doom for RISC OS.
For those of you unfamiliar with DeHackEd, it allows you to create patch
files which alter various aspects of Doom which are hardwired into the main
Doom executable. These include weapon damage, monster attributes (hit
points, animation etc.), and much more. The RiscOS version of DeHackEd
includes a WIMP front end, and allows the use of original PC DeHackEd
patches. Our thanks go to Luke Graham for his work in porting this, and to
the original DeHackEd author by whose permission this is available.
Please note that DeHackEd is released completely as is. RCI cannot be held
responsible for any damage resulting from its use with Acorn Doom. Any
comments should be forwarded to Luke Graham, the author of the port.
Organizer
---------
Organizer version 1.31 has been released, and can be found at:
http://www.arcsite.de/hp/chrismorison/
This version of Organizer is Shareware, so if you keep using it then you must
send in the registration fee (details come with Organizer). Registering this
version will give a discount on future commercial versions, and you _will_
make a saving.
Squeak Smalltalk v1.31 now available
------------------------------------
Smalltalk is the original object oriented programming language and
environment from which most OSs have learnt about windowing, pixel displays,
menus and so on.
You will need to read about Smalltalk to make best use of it, since it is
likely to be quite unfamiliar to you at first. The nearest widely known
competitor is Java, but Smalltalk is to Java as a 747 is to the Wright Flyer.
Squeak Smalltalk is a public domain version of this seminal language and
environment, available for Acorn, Mac, PC, most Unix variants and OS/2. The
license is very simple and liberal - basically you can do anything, including
make money from it.
There is an active and helpful user community based around a mailing list, as
well as the more general comp.lang.smalltalk newsgroup.
This version comes in a ~2.5Mb Zip archive suitable for !Spark, and occupies
around 4Mb unpacked. You will need 8+ Mb of RAM to get maximum advantage, but
it is possible to run in 2Mb with some work. It can make use of sockets if
you have any of the usual internet systems loaded.
See this address for downloads:

...and...

BAUG
-----
David McDowell kindly sent in this report for the Acorn Computers Preview
RISC PCII visit, at the last Bottisham Acorn User Group meeting. It is very
informative, and for those of you who have not been to any user group
meetings about RiscPC II, it will be very interesting. I certainly found it
very enjoyable. Thank you, David.
--
Acorn's Russell Scoates and David Walker visit
Bottisham Acorn Users Group (BAUG)
on Tuesday March 10th 1998
Preview of Acorn RISC PCII and Acorn NC
A little background to BAUG: we are one of the longest standing (if not the
oldest) of Acorn User Groups, formed in 1982, and we normally meet in Room 47
(Acorn computer room), 1st Floor, Design and Technology Building, Bottisham
Village College, Bottisham, Cambridge. Bottisham is about 5 miles east of
Cambridge on the A1303, off the A14. For those of you who know not of the
quaint Cambridgeshire ways, a Village College may sound grand - but is just a
large Secondary School!
We meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays in the month from 19:30 to 21:30 (in term
time) in room 47 (which is now the 'only' - there used to be four Acorn
computer rooms) - which is quite cosy, so we have alternative arrangements at
the College if we get 47 people or more coming.
Here is a brief synopsis of what was covered in the talk:
Russell and David did a joint presentation on 'Pheobe' a.k.a. Risc PC II (no
final decision yet on the name - it's still open to suggestions from Clan
members) with Russell emphasising on the marketing sales and advertising
side, and David the Engineering and Technical aspects.
Russell talked about:
- the latest round of changes within Acorn, which is back to three main
divisions again, the new appointments and some redundancies.
- Xemplar and the education market, and why Acorn's emphasis has broadened
into technology supply and away from direct involvement in the loss-making
education side. Xemplar are now profitable.
- Acorn's target markets. Why the need for technology 'show pieces', and
concentration on the enthusiast market for RISC PCII?
- New developments. Digital TV set-top boxes, Online Cable Media, satellite
broadcast, second generation digital boxes, Web TV.
- Acornsoft's delayed launch explained - now June/July. Plans for lots of
commissions for software from existing developers. Acorn gaming as well,
conversions and original games.
- NCs, Internet 'kiosks', NCs in shopping centres, and other plans to expose
the public to the delights of Acorn. Promotions in conjunction with Tesco
Computers, etc.
David's technical run through, covering all aspects:
- RiscPC II hardware, tower case, motherboard run through using lots of
strange acronyms (IOMD/PCI/BLT). I knew that last one - 'Bacon Lettuce and
Tomato'! :-)
- RISC OS, new filecore enhancements, long filenames and unlimited files
(well 80,000 anyway - more than that slows things down!)
- Performance enhancements. EIDE, fast 2Gb drives, Java, 32MB SDRAM
(main memory) standard, 4MB fixed VRAM (fast video memory), approx. 4x
speedup initially over RiscPC I with same 233MHz StrongARM, with more to
come! Graphics performance exceeding a Silicon Graphics workstation, with
30Mb graphics files in PhotoDesk!
- Galileo OS to come in 1999, and multiple ARMs?
* Questions and Answers
Lots of these, some questions even quite sensible! :-)
Both Russell and Dave were prepared to answer questions during and after
their presentations. They were very frank about what Acorn will and won't be
doing. Obviously, things covered by Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs)
couldn't be answered, if they had been, they would have had to kill us all
immediately after! ;-)
Russell also ran a quiz / Q&A session on us to find out what machines we had
now. This is very useful from their point of view, as they can get feedback
from the enthusiast market at which RISC PCII is targeted, and also find out
how many RISC PCII's we were going to buy each! ;-)
A very enjoyable, informative evening - if only the RISC PC II could be seen
working! We will have to wait 'til Wakefield for that - I'm ready with my
deposit money for RISC PCII!
GAG CD 2
--------
The German Archimedes Group are happy to announce their second CD-ROM, called
GAG CD 2. It will be available in mid-1998, featuring:
* Issues 1-36 of the German Acorn magazine "GAG-News", with the cover discs
for these issues and a full-text based, normalised search index for
efficient retrieval
* Quite a bit of software - mainly bigger things which do not fit onto a
floppy disc (suggestions are welcome)
* ARM Linux - not in an image file, but with the full, long file names!
This is possible thanks to CDBurn from Steffen Huber, available from
Warm Silence Software
The price is DM 49,- inc. VAT, ex. P&P.
For orders reaching them by 1st April 1998, the price is DM 40,- inc. P&P and
VAT in Germany, DM 45,- elsewhere in Europe.
