This version of Pluto has a new automatic setup procedure to transfer
you data across from Voyager. It replaces the procedure described below.
Copy the !Pluto application directory out of the distribution archive and
into an ordinary directory on your harddisc.
1. Run Voyager.
2. Run Pluto.
3. Select Misc->Import_Voyager from Pluto's icon bar menu.
This will:
a. Set up the Domain and User names that you had in Voyager.
b. Set up standard, save, and log boxes for each User.
c. Copy any stored mail and news articles from Voyager into the
appropriate Pluto Boxes (you are asked to confirm the transfer
of each Box).
d. Copy your address book and distribution lists into Pluto.
e. Set up Voyager to run Pluto when you click on the News and
Mail buttons on Voyager's button bar.
Note: in step (e) Pluto replaces the Voyager run files
!Voyager.Apps.News.!Run
!Voyager.Apps.Mail.!Run
The original run files are renamed !Run_old (in case you want to
restore them to their original state).
End of installation.
(Read the "Header Only News Fetches" section below if you want to
use NewsHound in place of the Voyager news fetcher).
Note that if you want Voyager's News and Mail buttons to run Pluto,
Pluto must have been "seen" by the RISC OS Filer. One way of ensuring
this is to put the !Pluto application in the same directory as the
!Voyager application.
Manual Installation
===================
Run !Voyager (so that Voyager's green telephone sits on the RiscOS
icon bar). This is necessary so that Voyager sets up various system
variables which say where files and directories are.
Copy the !Pluto application directory out of the distribution archive and
into an ordinary directory on your harddisc.
From the !Pluto iconbar menu, select Preferences->News.
Click over the box to the right of "News Transport" and "Mail
Transport" and select "Voyager" from the menu. This will look at
the system variables which Voyager has set up to indicate where the
News and Mail incoming and outgoing directories are.
Once this has been done, then it can find them even though Voyager
is not running.
Set Up News Details
===================
Set the "Domain" field to "argonet.co.uk".
Set the "U.name" field to your Argonet logon name. This will be
something starting with "arg", of the form "argxx99". It can be found
from Voyager, by following Preferences->User, and looking at the
"User Name" field.
Click OK.
Set Up User/Mail Details
========================
From the !Pluto icon bar icon, select Lists->Users.
This should bring up a Users list which contains one user name - Fred
Bloggs. Adjust-Double-click on this to bring up the User dialogue
box.
Change the "User Id" to your user name. This is the name that
precedes "@argonet.co.uk" in your email address.
Type your full name into "Name".
Make sure that the "In Box" and "Log Box" fields are set to
the document boxes into which you want incoming and logged-outgoing
mails to appear.
To set up a signature file for this user, click on the "Edit Sig"
button. This brings up an editor window into which you can type
your sig. If you already have a signature file somewhere, just drop
it into this text window.
Click OK.
If you have additional email addresses, these can be added by
clicking the Add button (black Plus sign icon) on the Users list
window.
You may want to use different "In Box" and "Log Box" for each email
address, so you may need to create additional document Boxes for
these. See below.
Transfering Stored News From Voyager
====================================
Look inside !Voyager.Apps.News.!NewsAgent.
Drag the directory "Articles" onto the !Pluto icon bar icon.
This will load all the files (recursively) into the article data
base. They will be placed in the document Box which is specified in
the "In Box" field of the Preferences->News dialogue.
If you have a lot of news articles stored, then this will take some
time.
Click with Select on the !Pluto icon bar icon to open the list of
Boxes. The numbers on the line for "News In" indicate the number of
unread and read articles respectively in that box.
Double click on the "News In" line to open the "News In" box. An
empty window, titled "News In" should appear. It's empty because
the News In box is set up to show only unread articles.
Click on the Up/Down arrow button (last on the right on the button
bar) to toggle between showing all or just unread articles.
Transferring Stored Mails From Voyager
======================================
Open a Voyager email list window (eg. the "Standard Mail Box" list).
Click on "Select All" from this Mailbox's menu, to select all the
emails.
Use the "Extract" option from the Voyager Mailbox menu to save all
the emails to a file. Leave the "Strip Header" option unticked, so
that the headers are saved with the text. This produces something
which looks like a raw mail file, including the #!rmail headers.
Drop this raw mail file onto the !Pluto icon bar icon.
A dialogue box will open asking you for a Box name where you want
the emails to be put. If you leave this blank, they will be put
into incoming mail boxes depending on the To: Cc: or Envelope-to:
fields in their headers.
If you are transferring a Mail Log box into Pluto, then select the
"Is this a Log of O/G Messages" option. This will use the To: field
rather than the From: field to be displayed in article lists.
Repeat this procedure for each of the mail boxes (Standard, Store,
and Log) for each of your email addresses.
Debatching Incoming News and Mail
=================================
Run !Voyager to fetch news and mail from the Internet.
Click on the "Debatch" button of !Pluto's Boxes list window to debatch
the news and mail articles from Voyager's incoming news and mail
files.
Header Only News Fetches
========================
The Voyager news fetcher cannot perform header-only news fetches but
Voyager users can use the public domain news fetcher/sender NewsHound
instead. NewsHound version 1.30 or later will integrate with Voyager.
Download NewsHound and SysLog (which it needs) from:
http://www.ping.demon.co.uk/acorn/
Put the !NewsHound and !SysLog applications in the same directory as !Voyager is.
Replace !Voyager.Apps.Transports.!NNTPFetch.!Run with a new !Run file which just contains the line:
<newshound$dir>.!Run -noicon -voyager -flashled
This will run !NewsHound rather than the Voyager news fetcher. The -noicon parameter causes NewsHound to quit when it's finished sending and fetching news.
In !NewsHound.Config.demGroup change the line which follows
# News server hostname
to the Argo news server, eg.
news.dial.pipex.com
Run !Pluto and set Preferences->News->News_Transport to NewsHound.
You can then use the "Header Only" option in Pluto's NewsGroup Edit window.
