- Creating Article Lists
- ======================
-
- Article Lists can be created either by:
-
- a. Double-clicking on A Box in the Boxes window.
- This opens a list of the articles in that box. Note, that if the "Hide
- Read Items" option is set for that box, then only Unread and Locked
- articles will be shown initially.
-
- b. Shift-double-click a line in an article list. If that line represents
- a collection or group of articles (eg. a newsgroup, or a subject title),
- then a new article list window is created which contains just those
- articles.
-
- c. Choose "Subset" from the article list menu. This opens the "Make Subset"
- dialogue, which allows you to specify selection criteria for a subset
- of articles from the original list. For example, a subset could be
- created of just those articles which have a specified word in their
- title, or in their text.
-
-
- Article List Displays
- =====================
-
- Article Lists can be displayed in using various sorting criteria.
-
- Choose Preferences->Sorting from the icon bar menu to show a menu of
- the available display types. These can be edited from here, while
- Preferences->Sorting->AddDisplay allows you to add new display types.
-
- A Display Type specifies:
- - How many levels of sorting and on what fields.
- - The format of the lines in the article list for each sort level
- (what fields they show, and at what position along the line).
-
- A default Display Type is specified for each document box, and article
- lists which are created from that Box will open with that Display Type.
-
- The Display Type for an Article List can be changed by clicking on the
- Sorting field in the Article List button bar (this is the text field to
- the right of the button bar). Alternatively, choose "Sorting" from the
- Article List menu.
-
- For example, an incoming mail box may usually be sorted by Date. In
- order to sort by the senders, choose the "Author" display type.
-
-
-
- Status Icons in Article List Windows
- ====================================
-
- Red Envelope: Newly arrived, unread.
- Orange Envelope: Unread.
- Cream Square: Read.
- Blue Padlock: Locked - protected against expiry or deletion.
- Green Padlock: Marked.
-
- The Marked state is the same as Locked, but shows as a different
- colour (Green rather than Blue square). It is useful for marking
- articles which need further attention. For example, articles which
- need to be replied to.
-
- A Red right pointing arrow together with a Read, Locked, or Marked
- icon indicates that a reply has been sent to this article.
-
-
-
-
- Opening Articles
- ================
-
- Double-click on a line in an Article List.
-
- - If the line represents a group of articles (eg. a newsgroup, or
- a subject title), then the Article List will be expanded to show
- the contents at the next level of sorting.
-
- - If the line represents a single article at the lowest level of sorting,
- then the Article Viewer window will be opened to display that article.
-
- - Shift-Double-Click on a line which represents a group will create
- a new Article List window which contains just the articles in that
- group.
-
-
-
- Article List Button Bar
- =======================
-
- Delete (Bin icon)
- Moves the selected articles into the Bin box.
-
- Export (Disc icon)
- Allows you to save the contents of the selected articles as a text
- file. The Export dialogue allows you to specify whether headers
- (full internet header or a short header containing title, author,
- date) is to be included.
-
- In order to save a selection of articles in a form which allows them
- to be loaded back into Voyager, select the "Internet Hdrs" and the
- "#! rnews" options. This will produce a raw news or raw mail file.
- If the original internet headers have not been kept, then a short
- header will be created from the Title, Author, Date, and Source fields
- for the article.
-
- Lock (Blue/green padlock icon).
- Select: Sets all the selected articles to LOCKED state.
- Adjust: sets the selected articles to MARKED rather than Locked.
-
- Unlock/Read (Yellow padlock icon).
- Select: Sets all the selected articles to Unlocked and READ state.
- Adjust: Sets the selected articles to UNREAD.
-
- Expand List (Up/Down arrows icon).
- This toggles between hiding and showing Read articles.
- When Read articles are hidden, only Unread. Marked and Locked articles
- are shown.
-
- If the Display Type has more than one level of sorting, then groups
- of articles are shown if that group contains ANY Unread, Marked or
- Locked articles. The Read articles in the group are also shown.
-
- Clicking with ADJUST will show just Unread and Marked articles, but
- not Locked articles.
-
- Archive (Green filing cabinet icon)
- SELECT displays a menu of the available Boxes. The selected articles
- are moved to the box which is chosen from the menu.
-
- SHIFT-SELECT is similar, but the selected articles are Copied into
- the chosen box, rather than Moved.
-
- ADJUST moves the selected articles to the Archive Box which has been
- specified for this box.
-
- Sorting Type (text field).
- When selected, this displays a menu of the available Sorting Types.
- This can be used to sort the Article List in a different way.
-
- Sorting types can be edited, and new ones added
- from Preferences->Sorting from Pluto's icon bar menu.
-
- Write (Pen icon).
- This opens a Write Mail or Write News window to allow you to write
- a message to be sent.
