TCPIP_New First time installation help
It is well worth reading the history files as these cover most of
changes in commands and use since v1.3x.
Installation
============
First Time
~~~~~~~~~~
Actually, first time installation is probably the easiest of the lot.
Before you carry out instalation, you will need to know the following:
Your machine's name, for eg "comptech"
The name of your domain, for eg "demon.co.uk"
Your IP address, for eg "158.152.25.231"
What serial port you want use, so that you can select
the required driver and speed.
The name or IP address of a news server that you are allowed to use if
you wish to recive news.
The name or IP address of a mail gateway that you are allowed to use if
you wish outgoing mail to be routed via a single machine (often saves
on online time, though of course !TCPIP can quite happily work without
a mail gateway.)
The name or IP address of a time server that you are allowed to use if
you wish to read network time and correct your computers clock with it.
The IP addresses of between one and three name servers if you are
connecting to the Internet, rather than a small private TCP/IP based
network.
It is beyind the scope of this to give expanations of the above.
There is plenty of literature around to enable you to understand news
servers, name servers, mail gateways, IP addresses, host names etc.
You should be able to find out all of the above information from your
Internet provider, usually with a quick phone call.
Assuming you have the above information, then create a directory
called "Internet", or "TCPIP" for example on your hard disc and unpack
the contents of this archive into it.
This should leave you with a directory structure as follows:
Internet.!TCPIP
Internet.!TCPIPUser
Internet.TCPIP_Doc
Internet.TCPIP_New
ReadMe (This file)
Now open the TCPIP_New directory and load the !Setup file into a text
editor and enter the details where indicated.
Once you have done this, save the !Setup file back to where is was.
In case your unpacked this with an archive filing system, I would
suggest that you now open the !TCPIPUser directory and double click on
the !Boot file so that you can be sure that the config program will
find the correct copy of !TCPIPUser.
Now double-click on the !Config file. This will Merge the configuration
information you have provided with a set of default setup files, leaving
you with a working setup.
Upgrading from v2.01
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The following files in !TCPIPUser have changed, or are new:
!Boot Path variable updated, including corrected FTP$Dir.
!Run Now only opens the Downloads directory.
Downloads The default place in which downloaded files are saved.
PathEnt Path processing control for the FTP client.
Menus.* A new set of menus to enable access to new facilties.
Config A new variable is required at the top of the file and
some new command options are available.
There are two options for upgrading, one is to do a fresh instalation as
above, or the other is to delete the menus.* files, and replace !Boot, !Run,
and menus from the Archive. Copy PathEnt out of the Archive into
!TCPIPUser, create a directory "Downloads" in !TCPIPUser and make a few
small changes to you config file as follows:
1. At the top, with all the set or setvar commands, add
set nsqserver "ns.{domain}"
This sets the name server used by the nsquery menus.
2. You may want to change the "attach asy ... ... slip ..." command
fromm "slip" to "cslip" to take advantage of the slight speed
increase CSLIP offser over SLIP. Check with your provider that CSLIP
is supported, and also check if you need to select a different
protocol at the initial login stage.
3. Finally, locate the "nntp xxx" commands and add "nntp trim 48".
This sets the maximum age of the NNTP ID History - yes it now gets
trimmed. ;-)
Upgrading from v2.02 (Not the later 2.02b)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would recommend that you update you menus and incorporate changes to
the Config file. All of the file changed since v2.01 have also changes
since the first v2.02 (dev) release.
Upgrading from v2.02b
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sorry, the ID history has reverted back to separate files for each
server, so you will need to copy the "History" file as "xxxHist" for
each server you use, where "xxx" is the abbreviation for the server.
Other than that, you only actually need the new !RunImage from this
archive.
It would be worth incorporating Config file differences outline for
upgrading from v2.01.
