ArcWeb 0.19 Release Notes
=========================
IMPORTANT NOTE: In order to use ArcWeb via any TCP/IP networking software at
all, you also need the fetchers appropriate to that networking software.
There are several HTTP fetchers for KA9Q's !TCPIP on ftp.demon.co.uk. One
(ArcWebK9Q) is included on the CD-ROM in this archive.
I have included in this distribution a beta version of ArcWebTCP for use
with Acorn TCP/IP version 2 only and NOT KA9Q.
If you run into trouble during installation or use, PLEASE read all the text
files in the root of this archive, particularly Problems and Instruct.
This is a beta test version. ArcWeb is available (via HTTP) from:
http://louis.ecs.soton.ac.uk/~snb94r/arcweb.arc
It is also available for FTP from: ftp.demon.co.uk as
/pub/archimedes/www/arcweb_0.19.arc
and from: micros.hensa.ac.uk as
/micros/arch/riscos/c/c135/arcweb.arc
You also require the DrawFile module available from ftp.acorn.co.uk as:
/pub/riscos/releases/drawfile.arc
I highly recommend that you look at the ArcWeb home page (go to my home page
[shown below] and follow the link to it) if you have already have http:
capability.
This release was made on 17 February 1995.
For conditions of use, please read Terms. For help on how to use and
configure ArcWeb, please read the Instruct file. If you have problems, read
the Problems file.
Bugs Fixed & Improvements since 0.18
====================================
ArcWeb now uses + instead of & as a space substitution in <isindex> searches
ArcWeb now types the files that fetchers have fetched if the fetcher returns an
ArcWeb extended type (like ArcWebK9Q does, I think). This means that when a file
is picked up from the cache, it will still be recognised as HTML or plaintext.
ArcWebTCP now reads INetDBase:Hosts before attempting a DNS lookup on host names.
This means that putting IP address of frequently accessed hosts will greatly
improve performance during the DNS lookup.
ArcWebTCP uses the XSocket_ SWIs to trap errors rather than allow stack backtraces
when an internet error occurs. These errors should now be reported correctly to
the user by ArcWeb.
ArcWebTCP intercepts mailto: URLs and opens an Edit window for you to compose an
email message. When you have finished, save the file to the ArcWebTCP icon bar
icon and the email will be sent. You must have set up your mail gateway and user
id on that gateway in the ArcWebTCP configuration window. (There is no need to
have launched the editor from ArcWeb - any email can be sent provided it starts
with the necessary To: header)
Fixed bug which causes crash if a line of text in a plain text file is longer
than 240 characters after tab expansion.
Known Bugs
==========
Known bugs can be found at http://louis.ecs.soton.ac.uk/~snb94r/arcweb.html
Parser is still slow - the filter technique used to parse and render the
page is logical but requires two passes through the source hence the lack of
speed.
