<p>
<bf>ArcWeb</bf> is a World Wide Web browser for Acorn RISC OS computers.
Although ArcWeb does not provide any of the functionality required to fetch
documents (over networks or down a modem) itself, it acts as an integrated
front end to the user, communicating with utilities which perform document
retrievals and graphics format conversions using the RISC OS Window Manager
message system. Since ArcWeb would be useless without these
<em>fetchers</em> & <em>renderers</em>, three helper applications are
provided <bf>!ArcwebLcl</bf>, <bf>!ArcwebImg</bf> and <bf>!ArcwebTCP</bf>.
In fact, in order to view this document with ArcWeb, ArcwebLcl will have
retrieved it. <a href="arcweblcl">ArcwebLcl</a> may be represented by the
<img src="#!arcweblcl"> icon on the icon bar (unless the icon bar icon is
switched off) and is used for viewing files on the local filing system.
<a href="arcwebtcp">ArcWebTCP</a><img src="#!arcwebtcp"> is used for viewing
resources whose name space is within http, WAIS, gopher or FTP, with Acorn
TCP/IP. The first is supported natively, whereas the other three require a
<a href="proxy">proxy</a> such as that found at www.hensa.ac.uk.
<p>This is a <a href="index">hypertext</a> link to the test page. Under a
default desktop palette, the text is black and the hypertext is blue. This
can be changed, if you wish, in the configuration dialogue box, but not in
this version. You will notice a much higher quality of rendition if you use
a screen mode with 256 or more colours.
Most HTML tags are handled. The major exception to this is the
<tt>FORM</tt> element and its related elements.
You can try the <a href="index#normal">anchored jump</a> to the index page.
Let's test <a href="local://resources:/$/Apps/!Help">launching an application</a>

If you also have ArcwebImg loaded (may be represented by the <img
src="#!arcwebimg"> icon unless icon bar option is switched off) then below
you will see three GIFs displayed. If it is not, or it is configured not to
render GIFs, then you will see error messages.

This software is also supplied with the latest version of gif2spr, by Simon
Truss. This section tests whether gif2spr is working properly:<br>
