About this tutorial
This tutorial is intended to give a quick understanding of how to use both
components of Topographer. It refers to several of the example maps supplied on
the release disc, and should be worked through from start to finish if it is to be of
maximum benefit.
Part 1 - Constructing a new map
Load the Start map from the Tutorial directory into Topo2D in the normal
way. The idea here is to add to the Start map to form the Later map, which
is also present on the disc for reference.
Choose the Show coords option to bring up the coordinates window. This will
help you to position the pointer correctly. You will find it easier to position
features accurately if you set the mouse speed to Slow using the !Configure
application supplied with your computer.
The numbers in the grid coordinates window change as you move the pointer on
the map. You should see five digits in the Coordinates window, if not check that
you have the five digits option selected in the Map=>Grid window. In the
following instructions, positions on the map are referred to by a ten figure
coordinate. This ten figure number is made up from 5 figures for the Easting
position and 5 figures for the Northing position eg 00298 00459 means 00298
Easting and 00459 Northing. The first three numbers relate to the grid position as
shown on the map eg 00298 Easting means grid 002 on the horizontal axis and 98
divisions within the grid. From this you can see that Topographer allows you to
position things with great accuracy to within one metre.
Hint: To move about the map quickly, drag either scroll bar with Adjust in any
direction to scroll the document in both horizontal and vertical directions.
Note: When following this tutorial read each paragraph first before starting
to place the feature.
Choose the Show features option on the document menu to bring up the features
window. Choose the Bridge feature and draw the bridge from 00208 00450 to
00602 00207 by first clicking Select at 00208 00450 and then double-clicking
at 00602 00207.
Note: When drawing line features you can backtrack by clicking Adjust to erase
one point at a time.
Choose the Road wider than 4m feature (yellow) and start the road by
clicking Select at 00000 00690 move to 00208 00450 and click Select while
holding down Shift. Holding down Shift will ensure that the road goes over
the bridge! You need to do this at both ends, so move the pointer to 00602
00207 and click Select while holding down Shift again. Complete the road by
clicking select at 00750 00090 and double-clicking Select at 00999 00140.
Now choose the Secondary road feature (orange) and start the road at 00602
00999 and move to 00660 00690. We need to join these two roads neatly so
this time finish the road by holding down Ctrl and clicking Select once. A
neat junction should be formed.
Choose the Church with tower feature and place the church at 00636 00685 by
clicking Select.
Place a pub at 00664 00722.
Place a post office at 00634 00634.
Scatter a few buildings around the road junction.
Choose the (blue) river symbol and edit the field at the bottom of the
Features window to make the river 2 metres wide and then click on OK. The
river starts at 00740 00320 and runs through 00695 00350, 00675 00390,
00670 00470, 00650 00550, and 00973 00999.
Place a caravan park at 00700 00585 and a camp site at 00725 00600.
Draw a railway from 00000 00975 to 00700 00920 and to 00840 00999.
Place a station at 00565 00930.
Finally, place a level crossing at 00625 00920.
If you were working with the full version you would now do the following:
=========================================================================
Save the map in the normal way, and export it to Topo3D.
Once in Topo3D, you can choose from three pre defined viewing positions or
create your own. The first position giving a view of the village is already set up.
Click on Make view to see your creation.
To choose another viewing position use the menu item View library=>Recall=>
and select from Village, Station and Bridge by clicking on the required one. You
can then use Make view again to create your scene.
The map called Later in the Tutorial directory is a finished copy of the map you
have just created - so you can compare your map with how it should look.
You may like to experiment with the other maps supplied on the disc to gain
experience at using the various functions.
