  8. Introduction
  9. ============

  11. AviFS is an extension of the RISCOS filing system that allows Replay to
  12. playback films of formats other than its own. (Only Video for Windows '.AVI'
  13. is supported in this version, but QuickTime '.MOV' is soon to be included.) 
  14. AviFS may be activated from the desktop by double clicking on the !AviFS
  15. application, whereupon films of supported alien formats can be treated as if
  16. they actually were Replay files: they may be double clicked to run them, or
  17. they may be dragged to any application capable of reading Replay files. 
  18. Alien films are distinguished from true Replay films by a difference in the
  19. appearance of their icons - the alien films have 'AVI' overlayed across the
  20. bottom half of the Replay icon.

  23. Installation
  24. ============

  26. The AviFS installation disc contains the !AviFS application and a directory
  27. called codecs. These can be installed as follows:
  28.  
  29.  * The !AviFS application may be copied to any convenient directory on your
  30.  hard disc.
  31.  
  32.  * The contents of the 'codecs' directory (i.e. the subdirectories Decomp600,
  33.  Decomp601, ...) must be copied to Replay's !ARMovie directory. To do this,
  34.  open the !ARMovie application, by double clicking its icon with the shift
  35.  key held, and then drag the new codecs to the open application window.
  36.  
  37. AviFS can access a file only if it has the file type 'AVI' (&FB2).  In many
  38. cases !AviFS will set the file type for you when you double click or drag an
  39. appropriate file, but it may be necessary to set the file type manually in
  40. some cases.  For playing movies from CD ROM, you will need to have a version
  41. of CDFS that correctly understands the DOSMAP conventions (AVIFS sets up an
  42. appropriate extension to filetype mapping for you). Unfortunately many
  43. versions of CDFS have a broken implementation of this, and must be patched
  44. with the !Filetypes application.
  45.  
  46. The !Filetypes application is supplied on the disc as a service to customers
  47. and in the hope that it will be useful. It however forms no part of AVIFS,
  48. and may be freely copied and distributed subject to the conditions set out
  49. in the !RunImage.

  52. Adjustments
  53. ===========
  54.  
  55. There are two commands that adjust the behaviour of AviFS, both offsetting
  56. memory usage against smooth play back.
  57.  
  58. * AviFsFillPeriod <decimal number between 0 and 500>
  59.  
  60.   This command sets the frequency at which Replay reads from a file: the
  61.   number specifies the time between reads in hundredths of a second.
  62.   Higher settings may produce smoother play back, but will cause Replay
  63.   to use larger buffers. The default setting is 200, which is sufficient
  64.   to read from CD ROM, but a smaller value of 100 may also be sufficient.
  65.   When accessing files from hard disc, 60 is perfectly adequate.

  67. * AviFsBufferSize [ 0 | 128K | 256K | 512K ]
  68.  
  69.   This command sets the size of buffers used within AviFS.  256K is the
  70.   default, and is probably the optimal value, although experimentation
  71.   is recommended.  If you have CDFast loaded then you may be able to
  72.   save memory by using a setting of 0.

  75. Using AviFs as a translator
  76. ===========================

  78. If an AVI film is double clicked with the shift key held then it will
  79. open as a directory that contains a Replay film named ARMovie.  This
  80. may be copied (by dragging) to any filer window.  Copies made in this
  81. way are directly useable by Replay without AviFS being loaded.

  84. Buying the full version:

  87. The full version costs £26.42, (inc P&P, no VAT to pay), available from the
  88. address below, and removes the restrictions on the length of the films you
  89. can play.

  92. Upgrades (for the full version):
  93. ================================

  95. As with all Warm Silence Software products, minor upgrades are provided free
  96. of charge, provided a formatted disc and a stamped self-addressed envelope
  97. are included. We reserve the right to charge for major upgrades, but we have
  98. never had to resort to this yet. If in doubt, please feel free to telephone
  99. or email first.

  102. but we accept no responsibilty for discs lost or damaged in transit, and we
  103. recommend you use padded "Jiffy" bags.
