  5. This demonstration version of Chameleon may be freely distributed.

  9. Chameleon is a Drawfile utility which allows you to change the colours in
  10. Drawfiles easily.
  11.  
  12. Use the Interactive Help application which is provided in the Archimedes
  13. Applications suite to provide help on Chameleon's facilities.

  18. Operating Instructions
  19. ======================
  20.  
  21. To use Chameleon:
  22.  
  23. 1. Load Chameleon by double-clicking on the !Chameleon icon.
  24.  
  25. 2. Drawfiles can be loaded into Chameleon by dragging them onto the
  26.    Chameleon icon on the icon bar.
  27.  
  28. 3. Use the toolbox and/or menu to select the operation to be performed.
  29.  
  30. 4. Clicking on an object in the picture will apply the current operation
  31.    to that object.
  32.  
  33. 5. Clicking on an object with Adjust will take the colour from that object
  34.    (where you clicked) and use it as the current replacement colour.

  37. The Toolbox and Colour Selector
  38. ===============================
  39.  
  40. If the toolbox is not displayed, move the pointer into the Chameleon window
  41. and press F6.
  42. If the colour selector is not displayed, click on the colour box in the
  43. bottom right corner of the toolbox.
  44.  
  45. Changing colours
  46. ================
  47.  
  48. Make sure that the tool on the left hand side of the middle row in the
  49. toolbox is selected. Choose a colour from the colour selector. (Use the 256
  50. colour palette if you are in a 256 colour mode.)
  51. Click on an object in your picture and its colour will be changed. If the
  52. object has no fill colour, select the fill tool at the right hand side of
  53. the bottom row of tools. This allows you to change the fill colour and leave
  54. the line colour unchanged. The outline tool (next to the fill tool) allows
  55. you to change the line colour whilst leaving the fill colour unchanged.

  57. Fountain fills
  58. ==============
  59.  
  60. The four tools on the left hand side of the bottom row in the toolbox
  61. provide fountain fills. When you select one of these tools, an arrow appears
  62. on the colour box. To select a start colour, click on the left side of the
  63. box and then choose a colour. To select an end colour, click on the right
  64. side of the box and then choose a colour. Fountain fills give a range of
  65. shades between these two colours. Even a 256 colour mode, however, is
  66. incapable of displaying the complete range of colours although RISC OS 3
  67. machines are capable of displaying more than 256 colours by using a
  68. dithering technique.

  70. Drag an arrow across the object-to-be-filled and then click on the object to
  71. implement the fill. There is a different arrow for each tool.
  72.  
  73.   Linear fill: an arrow with a start point and end point. The fountain fill
  74.   extends from the start point to the end point.
  75.  
  76.   Band fill: an arrow with 4 movable end points. The fountain fill extends
  77.   in both directions between the two pairs of end points. Moving the inner
  78.   end points sets the width of the start colour band.
  79.  
  80.   Radial fill: an arrow with 2 movable end points. The fountain fill extends
  81.   from the inner circle to the outer circle.
  82.  
  83.   Elliptical fill: two arrows, one with 1 end point and the other with 2. 
  84.   The fountain fill extends from the inner ellipse to the outer ellipse.
  85.  
  86. The arrows can be moved to a different position by holding down Shift and
  87. dragging one of the points.
  88.  
  89. If you hold down Ctrl whilst moving the arrows, movement is restricted to
  90. steps of 15°. This also allows arrows to be perfectly horizontal or
  91. vertical.

  93. Other tools
  94. ===========
  95.  
  96. The tools in the second row (from left to right) have the following
  97. functions:
  98.  
  99. Replace: changes the line and/or fill colour to the current colour
  100. Change hue: changes the colour to the hue of the current colour
  101. Make grey: changes the colour to a shade of grey
  102. Brighten: brightens the colour by decreasing the amount of black
  103. Darken: darkens the colour by increasing the amount of black
  104. Weaken: weakens the colour by increasing the amount of white
  105. Strengthen: strengthens the colour by decreasing the amount of white
  106.  
  107. Target area
  108. ===========
  109.  
  110. The top row of tools allows you to define the target area affected by the
  111. colour-changing operations. The tools (from left to right) have the
  112. following functions:
  113.  
  114. Local: only the object beneath the pointer is affected
  115. Global: all objects having the same colour as the object beneath the pointer
  116. are affected
  117. Within box: a box may be dragged into position, colour changes apply to all
  118. objects which are entirely enclosed by the box
  119. Beneath box: changes are applied to all objects which are wholly or
  120. partially enclosed by the box
  121. Not within box: changes are applied to all objects which are completely
  122. outside the box
  123.  
  124. Keyboard shortcuts
  125. ==================
  126.  
  127. Shift     Affects the outline:
  128.  
  129.           When the colour of a thin line is to changed, it may be difficult
  130.           to position the pointer accurately. If Shift is pressed at the
  131.           same time as clicking Select or Adjust while the pointer is over
  132.           the object, the operation will act upon the line.
  133.           The effect is the same as when the outline tool is selected.
  134.  
  135.  
  136. Ctrl      Affects the fill:
  137.  
  138.           When an object has no fill colour, or the filled area is very small,
  139.           Ctrl should be pressed at the same time as clicking Select or Adjust.
  140.           The pointer should be moved as close to the line as possible.
  141.           The effect is the same as when the fill tool is selected.       
  142.  
  143.           For Text objects, and text areas, pressing Ctrl during a click will
  144.           treat those objects as if their bounding boxes were solid colour.
  145.  
  146.           For Sprites, pressing Ctrl will ignore any mask.
  147.  
  148. Arrow     The arrow keys move the pointer in steps of one pixel.
  149. keys
  150.  
  151. Ctrl F2   Closes the current window.
  152.  
  153. F3        Save the current picture.
  154.  
  155. Shift F3  Save the current picture as a directory containing four drawfiles,
  156.           one each for the four standard colour separations C,M,Y,K.
  157.  
  158. Ctrl F3   Save the current picture as a directory containing one drawfile
  159.           for every colour present (up to 64 separations).
  160.  
  161. F5        Toggle Full view on and off. Note that zooming is not available
  162.           whilst Full view is on.
  163.  
  164. F6        Toggles the toolbox on and off.
  165.  
  166. F7        Toggle the "lock" on and off. When a window is locked, its picture
  167.           cannot be altered by clicking Select on it.
  168.  
  169. F8        Undo the last colour change.
  170.  
  171. F9        Redo the last colour change that was undone.
  172.  
  173. Page Up   Zoom in on the point where the mouse pointer is.
  174.  
  175. Page Down Zoom out from the point where the mouse pointer is.
  176.  
  177. Home      Restore the zooming factors to 1:1
  178.

  180.           Select the options from the top row of the toolbox.
