  1. IMPACT ZONES ON JUPITER (JULY 18, 1994)

  3. This photo was obtained with the IRAC 2B near-infrared instrument at
  4. the MPI/ESO 2.2-metre telescope on July 18, 1994, 03:10 UT (05:10
  5. CEST; 23:10 Chilean time). 
  6.  
  7. It shows the plumes associated with the impacts of fragments A (below,
  8. left) and E (below, right) of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, as seen at a
  9. wavelength of 2.1 micron.  On this photo, the plume of the F-impact
  10. (to the right of the E-plume, under the Great Red Spot in the middle)
  11. is too faint to be well seen. The A-plume has just completed its
  12. fourth rotation since it was created by the impact of the A-fragment
  13. in the evening of July 16. The astronomers are surprised by the
  14. apparently long life of these new features.
