DISCLAIMERS
───────────
id Software cannot and will not provide any support for GATEKEEPER.
The author of GATEKEEPER will not provide any help for any reason in the
unlikely event that GATEKEEPER destroys any software and/or hardware and
in turn does not accept responsibility for any of the occurances mentioned
here.
It is illegal to distribute a registered copy of GATEKEEPER to anyone
not noted in the DOOM launch screen without explicit permission from the
author and in turn the author reserves the right to demand retribution
for such occurances.
The author of GATEKEEPER reserves the right to add or remove any functional
portion or portions from the GATEKEEPER software.
START-UP
────────
If there are any command line parameters not supported by GATEKEEPER that
might appear in any future versions of DOOM/DOOM2, you can initiate them
at the DOS prompt. For instance:
C:\DOOM2>gate -file mypwad.wad
The extra parameters will be displayed at the bottom of the screen and will
be initiated when the RUN DOOM II button is pressed.
MAIN MENU
─────────
*EXTRA NOTE* You can press [C] in any menu to change the color of the boxes.
There are a possible 64 colors to chose from.
START POINT - This is the different levels provided by DOOM and DOOM II.
There are 27 levels provided for DOOM and 32 provided by DOOM II. Select the
level for which you want to start at and you will progress from that point.
If playing Modem/Serial play or IPX Network play, all computers must have
the same level selected or it will not work.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -WARP # # (DOOM 1 Episode, Level)
-WARP # (DOOM 2 Level 1-32)
PLAY MODE - Used to select the different play modes. Either Single Player,
Modem/Serial or IPX Network. GATEKEEPER will run the appropriate start-up
program according to which one of these options is selected.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: DOOM2 (Single Player)
SERSETUP (Modem/Serial play)
IPXSETUP (IPX NetworkpPlay)
MONSTER MASH - Determines whether or not you want to use baddies, use no
baddies, respawn baddies or have fast and aggressive baddies. In multi-
player modes, all computers must have the same baddies selections or it
will not work properly. NIGHTMARE is the equivalent of Ultra-Violence
with Respawning, Fast Baddies.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -NOMONSTERS (No Baddies)
-RESPAWN (Baddies respawn after 8 seconds)
-FAST (Baddies are really aggressive)
MATCH MODE - Determines which mode you wish to play in multiplayer mode.
However, GATEKEEPER gives you the ability to use DMatch and Alt DMatch in
single player mode. You cannot use Alt DMatch without DMatch and therefore
selecting Alt DMatch will automatically select DMatch. In Alt DMatch mode,
items will respawn after 2 minutes. Invulnerability and Blur Spheres do
not respawn.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -DEATHMATCH
-ALTDEATH
TIMED GAME - Sets a time limit in minutes to how long a level will last
before the levels ends automatically. Only works in DMatch modes.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -TIMER # (# = Amount of time in minutes)
SKILL LEVEL - Selects the difficulty you wish to play at when starting a new
game.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -SKILL # (# = 1 thru 5)
SAVED GAMES - Loads the selected game when the RUN DOOM II button is
pressed. Make sure the Play Mode is set appropriatly for the selected game.
MONSTER MASH, MATCH MODES and SKILL LEVEL have no effect when loading a
saved game. Selecting No Saved Game will in turn not load any of the games
saved on disk.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -LOADGAME # (# = 0 thru 5. 0 being the first)
TURBO - Enables turbo play factor from a 1% to 250% player speed increase.
This does not apply to monsters and moving contraptions. Turbo 100 is a good
turbo factor in my opinion. The only thing I don't like about this option
in multi-player mode is that DOOM keeps sending these annoying messages
saying "INDIGO: IS TURBO!" and so forth. I guess id Software was dying to
annoy us somehow!!! Congratulations id, mission accomplished!!!
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -TURBO # (# = 1 thru 250)
COMMS MENU
──────────
PROTOCOL - Selects which mode of communication you wish to make when Modem/
Serial mode is selected. Call Phone will call the number displayed in the
Phone List box over modem. Answer Phone answers the call from another
player. Serial Cable connects two computers via null-modem cable according
to COM Port setting and IRQ setting.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -DIAL ###-#### (SERSETUP only)
-ANSWER (SERSETUP only)
PHONE LIST - Allows you to make a phone list of up to 50 players. The first
line must contain the name of the player and the second must contain the
number. It is not neccessary to include the hyphon in the number as the
modem ignores it anyway. Using "*70," will disable Call-Waiting. It is
not possible for the Ansering party to disable Call-Waiting. Selecting ADD
will add a number to the list. DELETE will erase the entry displayed.
BAUD RATE - Selects the baud rate that your modem will communicate at. DOOM
will not support modems that have a data rate of less than 9600. Using this
setting makes GATEKEEPER over-ride the baud rate specified in the MODEM.CFG
file within the DOOM or DOOM2 directory. This option only works with SERSETUP
and is neccessary for Modem play and Serial play.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -# (# = Baud rate. 9600, 14400, 38400, 57600)
COM PORT - This will set your modem to communicate with the appropriate port.
This option only works with SERSETUP and is neccessary for Modem play and
Serial play.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -COM# (# = 1 thru 4. EX:-COM2)
UART - Determines whether or not you wish to use a UART 8250 or UART 16550.
The default value for SERSETUP is UART 16550.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -UART 8250 (To switch from the default value)
MODEM TYPE - This list contains modem INIT strings for 50 modem types
compiled by our friends at id Software. Find your modem on the list and
choose APPLY to make a new MODEM.CFG for your modem. If your modem is not
on the list, use the modem INIT string generator to a make a string (See
GENERATE INIT below).
IRQ - SERSETUP uses IRQ settings to communicate with your modem during Modem
play and Serial play. GATEKEEPER supports IRQ's 1 thru 9.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -IRQ # (# = IRQ number)
IPX NODES - Selects the number of players who are going to play in a multi-
player game on an IPX network. This option only works with IPXSETUP.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -NODES # (# = Number of players 2-4)
IPX PORT - Selects which port to use on the IPX network if your network
supports more than one port. If more than one port is supported, then more
than one group of players can play at one time. All players of a specific
group must have the same IPX port selected or it won't work. This option
only works with IPXSETUP.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -PORT # (# = Port Number. 1 to 5 ports are supported
by GATEKEEPER)
GENERATE INIT - Running this will initiate the modem INIT string generator as
specified in the STUDIO menu. The modem INIT generator provided with this
package is GATEGEN v1.1. The modem I use is included in the list provided
by id but when I run this string on modem play, I get very bad results.
When I ran GATEGEN, the string it provided me worked flawlessly as with all
the others who tried this method. I don't guarantee in any way that this
will be the case for you but in most cases, it will generate the string you
need. (Programmers see details in GATEGEN.DOC for specifications on writing
other DOOM modem INIT generators that will work from the GATEKEEPER environ-
ment.)
DOOM CFG MENU
─────────────
SFX VOLUME - Sets the volume of the sounds in DOOM and DOOM 2. Only
GATEKEEPER has the capability to adjust the volume outside of the DOOM en-
vironment. Selecting either ON or OFF will turn the sound effects on or off
accordingly.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -NOSOUNDS (Turns Sounds off)
-NOSFX (Turns Sound Effects off)
MUSIC VOLUME - Sets the volume of the music in DOOM and DOOM 2. Only
GATEKEEPER has the capability to adjust the volume outside of the DOOM en-
vironment. Selecting either ON or OFF will turn the music on or off
accordingly.
COMMAND LINE EQUIVALENT: -NOMUSIC (Turns Music off)
MOUSE SENSITIVITY - Sets the mouse sensitivity. Only GATEKEEPER has the
ability to adjust this option outside of the DOOM environment. There is
no command line parameter for this option.
CONTROL TYPE - Selects what type of control devices you wish to use in
order to control DOOM. Only GATEKEEPER and the SETUP.EXE program provided
with DOOM have the ability to adjust these options. There is no command line
parameter for this option.
CHAT MACROS - Here is where you can select the chat macro verbage you wish
to express during Modem, Serial or IPX multi-player modes. Click on the line
of text you wish to change and type in the new string being careful not to
exceed the right most side of the box. I would suggest having one of these
strings say "How many frags do you have?" for use in DMatch mode. To
activate a certain string while playing DOOM, type "T" then press ALT plus
the number of the string. Macros can only be changed by GATEKEEPER or you
can do it manually by editing the DEFAULT.CFG file.
MOUSE BUTTONS - Lets you select which mouse button will have what effect
while playing DOOM, that is if you like using a mouse while playing DOOM and
providing that KEYBRD+MOUSE is selected as your control types. Click on the
effect until the button you wish to use appears. Only GATEKEEPER and the
SETUP.EXE program have the ability to affect this option.
GAMMA - This adjusts the brightness of the screen while playing DOOM. OFF
indicates that no Gamma Correction will be used and thus turns the screen
dark. You can adjust this from within the DOOM environment by pressing
F11 to cycle though the different Gamma settings. Only GATEKEEPER has the
ability to adjust this setting outside of the DOOM environment.
MESSAGES - This determines whether or not messages will be displayed. This
includes messages sent via multi-player modes, when items are picked up and
when key doors are pushed. If OFF, you get no messages PERIOD! This can
also be set from within the DOOM environment under the OPTIONS menu.
DETAIL LEVEL - This is either High or Low. For slower machines, setting
the Low detail level option can increase speed. This can also be set from
within the DOOM environment under the OPTIONS menu.
STUDIO MENU
───────────
LMP RECORDER - Here you can select your options for GATEKEEPERS unique LMP
recorder. On PLAY, select a tape you wish to play back and press the RUN
DOOM II button to watch the tape. In PLAY mode, no other options within
GATEKEEPER will have any effect. On RECORD, select the tape you want to
record onto and any selections you wish to play at. In multi-player modes,
all players must be recording at the same time, on the same tape or it won't
work.
VIDEO LIBRARY - Here is where you will select the tape you wish to make your
recording onto. Under each tape is displayed the maximum file size of the
tape and how many minutes of game play will take place before the tape is
full. For instance, if you record on tape 2 which is a 30 minute tape and a
file size of 256k, but only play for 15 minutes, the file will not reach its
full capacity of 256k but rather only 128k. Use the tape required to hold
the amount of game play you desire. The descriptions on the tape indicates
whether or not it is EMPTY or USED. If used the tape will display the date
the recording was made and play mode it was made in. SP indicates a Single
Player recording, MP indicates Modem Play recording and NP indicates Network
Play recording.
EXTERNAL UTILITIES - GATEKEEPER has many areas devoted to utilizing outside
software. By clicking the area next to the description, you will be able to
type the name of the software used. Clicking the black line underneath, you
can enter any command line parameters required to execute the software. The
Modem INIT String Generator cannot be run from this area but in turn must be
run from the COMMS menu. All other utilities can be run by clicking the RUN
button next to the appropriate command.
PWAD's MENU
───────────
REPLACEMENT PWADS - This is where all the PWAD's you want to play will be
displayed. To enter a PWAD file in the list, select the level you want the
PWAD to replace and then select the PWAD. Once the PWAD is highlighted,
click it again to place it in the list. Clicking on CLEAR will clear all
PWADs from the list. PWAD files that contain more than one level must be
placed in the first level until the next version of GATEKEEPER is released.
I will add this later.
PWAD LIBRARY
────────────
This is the list containing all the PWADs you have in the current directory.
This list contains the name of the PWAD, the level it replaces, the size of
the file, number of levels contained in the PWAD and the type of PWAD either
an Original DOOM PWAD or a DOOM II PWAD. When you place the PWAD in a slot
other than the one displayed here, GATEKEEPER will automatically re-assign
the PWAD to the required level.
