- FLASHBACK: THE QUEST FOR IDENTITY

- OPENING SEQUENCE
-
- Conrad B. Hart is running for his life. He is being chased by thugs of the
- Interplanetary Security Agency (ISA). As he runs through the corridors he
- hears the sound of a jet bike motor. He rushes toward the sound, dodging
- gun blasts, finds the bike and makes a bid for freedom.
-
- Conrad jumps on the bike and makes for outer space, but the ISA are
- pursuing in a large hoverboat. Dodging the hoverboat's laser blasts, Conrad
- heads into a jungle. A near miss knocks out the jet bike, so Conrad grabs
- the gun and jumps free before the jet bike crashes....
-
- Waking, Conrad grasps for the holocube and knocks it over the edge of the
- terrace.
-
- Now Conrad is under your control. It is up to you to find out why you are
- being pursued by the ISA...and save the human race!
-
- PURPOSE OF THIS WALKTHRU
-
- Instructions are given for each level. However, explicit step by step
- actions are not supplied. Solutions to specific problems are given, along
- with directions for finding vital articles which you need to progress. Note
- that this walkthru:
-
- 1. Assumes you are playing the game on the Easy setting. If you play the
- game on the Normal or Expert settings you will encounter many more enemies.
- Otherwise you should be able to use this walkthru as is.
-
- 2. Assumes you have read the game documentation thoroughly, and know how
- to perform all the necessary actions and how to avoid dying!
-
- 3. Recommends that you save at the save pillars in order to avoid
- replaying the same sequences more than necessary.
-
- 4. Recommends use of the FLASHBACK trainer (FBTRNS.ZIP in Gamers' Forum
- Action/Arcade Games Library) to maximize your shield count.
-
- LEVEL 1
-
- Fetch the holocube that you knocked off the terrace by climbing down a few
- levels. Climb back up and make your way to the right. When you see the
- guard, go down and kill him. Go left and continue until you find and pick
- up the Stone. Climb up and take the credits. There is a guard below and to
- the right of the Stone. Be wary of the motion detector to the guard's right
- which opens the gate he is next to. Kill him. Take the Magnetic Cartridge.
- Go down to the right, drop down as far as possible and continue right. Use
- the ledge over the Disintegrator Zone, continue right, jumping over the
- first Electrified Ground. Jump up and take the elevator up to the Energy
- Generator. Here you should view your Holocube, charge your Magnetic
- Cartridge and recharge your shield if necessary.

- Climb up to the left and kill the guard on the left. Continue climbing up,
- activating the elevator using the motion sensors as needed to get to the
- top. Then go right and down to the wounded man. He will ask you to find his
- Teleport. Retrace your steps to the left until you reach the Cartridge
- Lock. Use the charged magnetic cartridge in the lock, then make your way to
- the left.

- Avoid the first Electrified Ground and take the elevator up. Go left and
- climb up to the elevator activator. Use the Stone to stop the elevator on
- the level you are on. Fetch the Teleport from the elevator.
-
- Return to the wounded man, and receive an ID Card in place of the
- Teleport.
-
- Retrace your steps, to the left again, continuing on past the elevator.
- Use the save pillar and then go down and open the gate using the ID Card in
- the card lock. Go right, then jump down catching hold of a ledge to prevent
- falling to your death. Jump down and kill the two guards and avoid the
- blaster. Go right and meet the old man. He will offer to sell you an Anti-
- Gravity Belt for 500 credits.

- Return to the elevator that took you up to the Teleport device. If the
- elevator is "down," take it up, go left, drop back down one level and
- proceed to where the elevator was. Jump down and kill the two guards. Go
- right, and switch off the Disintegrator Zone. Continue right. Shoot the
- guard (after drawing his attention away by throwing the Stone to the right)
- and continue right. Pick up some small change in credits and a key along
- the way. Shoot the guard below the energy generator. Climb up to the
- generator and then up to the 500 Credits. Take the credits!

- Retrace your steps and return to the old man. Pay him 500 Credits in
- exchange for the Anti-Grav belt and use the Anti-Grav belt to descend the
- hole into the next level.

- LEVEL 2 (Code: COMBEL)
-
- On arriving on level 2, make your way up to the two guards and Ian. Kill
- the guards and then talk to Ian. Ian will recover your memory for you. You
- now know that you have discovered evidence that aliens have infiltrated the
- human population. The ISA then kidnaped you, but not before you had taken
- precautions by storing your memory in the holocube. Ian tells you to must
- win a ticket on the Death Tower game show in order to travel to Earth.
- First you must go to the bar and ask for Jack. Go right and find a fused
- switch. Go down to the right, kill the guard and retrieve the fuse. Mend
- the fused switch. Use the switch and take the elevator up to New
- Washington. Go left and obtain a map from the man at the checkpoint. Use
- this map to find your way around New Washington throughout this level. Go
- left and activate the elevator with the switch. Go down to the subway. Take
- a train when it arrives.

- Take the subway to America and go up to the Bar. Talk to the barman, then
- go right and up to talk to Jack. Jack needs 1500 credits for the false
- papers. He suggests you go to the Employment Office.
-
- Go left and back down to the Subway. Take a train to Europa. Go up and
- left to the Work Center. Here you are told to go to the Admin. Centre for a
- Work permit.
-
- Go right and back down to the Subway. Take a train to Africa. Go up and to
- the left to a desk where you will be directed up to the Admin. Center. Talk
- to the administrators at Windows A, C and B, in that order, and they will
- let you see the Boss. The Boss will give you a work permit in exchange for
- your ID card.
-
- Return to the Work Centre at Europa, going left to the Mission Screens.
- Accept a mission using the Work Permit and perform the mission. Repeat
- performing missions until you have 1500 credits, as follows:

- MISSIONS
- ========
-
- TAKE PARCEL FROM SPACE PORT (ASIA) TO TITAN TRAVEL (AFRICAN)
-
- Go to Asia. Go up and right. Speak to the woman at the desk and she will
- hand over the parcel. Go to Africa. Shoot the guard at the top of the
- elevator on the right. Go right to the man at the Titan Travel desk. Hand
- over parcel in exchange for 100 credits.
-
- CONDUCT A VIP SAFELY TO THE RESEARCH CENTRE
-
- Go to Africa. Go right and meet VIP. Go right and down to elevator. Bring
- it up to VIP's level and take it down again. The VIP will go with you and
- follow you but you will have to take side excursions to clear the route for
- him. Go right until the way is blocked. Leave the VIP and climb up and over
- to activate the gates. Continue right, climb up and jump over the bomb.
- Climb down and return left to pick up the VIP. Take the elevator down with
- the VIP. Climb up to the guard. Kill him and pick up the key. Continue to
- left, kill the guard and use the key in the lock. Continue left to the room
- with two robot laser blasters. Destroy the two robots with your gun and
- fetch the key from the top level. Return to the VIP, unlocking the final
- gate with the key. Take the VIP down to the Research Centre on the elevator
- and receive 300 credits. You are immediately teleported back to the Work
- Center.

- ANNIHILATE A RENEGADE CYBORG
-
- Go to the bar (America). Talk to a man at the bar and go to Restricted
- Area One and talk to the policeman. Return to the bar and go to the far
- left. Kill the guard, and talk to the man. Go back to the policeman and
- kill him. Fetch the key. Go back to the far left of the bar and use the key
- in the lock. Climb down and kill both cyborgs, earning 400 credits. You
- will Teleport back to the work center again.

- REPLACE COMPUTER BOARD WITHIN 90 SECONDS
-
- Teleport to the Computer Centre. Avoiding all the death traps and going as
- fast as possible make your way to the computer terminal. Run to the far
- right, and activate switch. Go down a level and run to the left. Go down
- both the elevators, then go right to the elevator shaft. Climb over ledge
- to activate elevator. Take the elevator down to computer room. Go right and
- repair terminal by taking a computer board from the first lower terminal
- position and using the board in the third position from the left. You will
- receive 600 credits and teleport back to the work center.

- CLEAR OUT MUTANTS FROM RESTRICTED AREA
-
- There are no real puzzles here. Explore everywhere. Be very careful. Avoid
- falls, be prepared to shoot a mutant at any time. Pick up the keys to
- unlock gates to other areas. Pick up some credits. Receive 600 credits for
- the job.
-
- Pick up a photo from the slot machine using your extra credits. Go to Jack
- and receive the forged papers in exchange for 1500 credits.
-
- Take the papers to the man at Death Tower TV show desk and enter the
- contest!
-
- LEVEL 3 (Code: ANTIC)
-
- The Death Tower is circular. There are eight levels; level 8 being the
- lowest, level 1 being the top. You must make you way around each level
- until you reach the elevator up to the next level. Of course, each level is
- fraught with enemies. Gun 'em down! When you kill the last enemy on level
- 1, you win the contest. You are awarded a trip to Earth. Several hours
- later you board the vessel that takes you to Earth.

- LEVEL 4 (Code: NOLAN)
-
- On arriving at the Earth space port, use the elevator on the right and go
- down to the man on the desk. Hand over your papers. Exit on the left via
- another elevator. Shoot the two guards. Take the elevator down to the exit
- of the space port, killing guards and robot laser guns and make your way to
- the taxi stand on the right. Take the taxi to the Paradise Club. To get
- into the club, make running jumps using the upper ledges. Break the glass
- at the club entrance with the gun. Go right into the club.

- Go down on the elevator. Go right and shoot the guard. Take the elevator
- up and climb up to the platform hanging by chains from the ceiling. Break
- the glass panel on the left by shooting at it. Jump to the left and pick up
- the key. Go right, shoot the guard and enter the bar. Go through the bar
- and use the key in the lock in front of the Disintegrator Zone.

- Go left and up, using the elevators, to the switch guarded by a rolling
- robot laser gun. This deactivates the Disintegrator Zone. Return to where
- the Disintegrator Zone was and take the elevator down. Jump onto the
- hanging ledge and wait for the elevator to arrive.
-
- Go down several floors. Climb up to the open gate on the right. Go through
- it and fight off a guard and two floating robot guns. Pick up the key and
- get out of there quickly, on the left. You can get trapped in here! Go down
- to the next floor and go right and operate the switch to turn off the
- Disintegrator Zone. Now go up to the top floor and activate the switch on
- the right. Go left and go down to the bottom floor. Go right and open the
- lock with the key. Take the elevator up.

- Go right and down. Go down on the elevator. Go left and up to the switch.
- Go right and pick up a key. Take elevator back up and open lock with key.
- Before going right, go back and make sure you use the save pillar in the
- trap door area to your right. It is tricky but by rolling in from the right
- you can get in to the save and recharge area. Go right, destroy a floating
- robot laser blaster. Continue right. Once you pass the mine you will have
- to run, shoot the floating robot laser blaster to open the door and roll
- out before the moving Disintegrator Zone kills you. (Alternatively, when
- you find you are being chased by the moving Disintegrator Zone, try a
- running jump over it, to the left, to get behind it. Once clear, continue
- right, destroy the floating robot laser blaster and the gate will open.
- Roll through the tunnel.)

- You will now witness aliens plotting to destroy the human population.
- Unfortunately, you inadvertently land in their midst, and get put in the
- dungeons!
-
- LEVEL 5 (Code: ARTHUR)
-
- Quick! Race out of the dungeon, before the guard kills you, and get the
- gun that is below, next to the save pillar. Kill the guard. Pick up the key
- just to the right of the save pillar. Go right, and up one level to operate
- the switch that opens the door on the lower level on the other side. Go
- down one level and open the lock with the key. Climb up until you see the
- moving Disintegrator Zone. Avoiding the "Zone" climb up behind it and run
- left and down to the guards. Avoiding an intermittent Disintegrator Zone,
- go left, kill the guard and pick up the Teleport Receiver and Remote
- Control. Once again avoiding the "Zone," climb up to the other guard, shoot
- him and pick up the key.
-
- Retrace your steps to the top level on the right, then throw the Teleport
- Receiver to the right. Activate the Teleport Remote Control.
- (Alternatively, quicker but riskier, perform a running jump from the top
- level to the right.) Use the key to open the lock to the right and down.
- Throw the Teleport Receiver down the chasm on the right, and activate the
- Teleport Remote Control.

- Destroy the flying robot laser blaster, and go left. Kill the Morph alien
- and pick up the Teleport Receiver. Go right, through the now open gate.
- Kill the Morph alien. Go left on the lower floor and through the gate
- beyond the save pillar. Moving left, avoid the moving Disintegrator Zone,
- and destroy the flying robot laser blaster. Climb up, then down and stand
- under the large Teleport device.

- Looks like you've been accidentally teleported to the Morph home planet!
-
- LEVEL 6 (Code: SHIRYU)
-
- Kill two Morphs. Go up and to the right and activate the switch. Go back
- to the left and down, and climb up to the right to the elevator. Take the
- elevator down. Get past the gun and go further down. Kill the Morph. Get
- the Stone on the floor at the far right. Place the Teleport Receiver by
- locked gate. Get the mechanical mouse. (This can be used to activate or
- and/or deactivate anything which is operated by a pressure pad. But I found
- no need for it.) Replace the mouse with the Stone to keep the Disintegrator
- Zone deactivated. Open the door using the far left activator below the gate
- and Teleport to gate.

- Go through the gate toward the man. Activate the switch above the locked
- gate. Shoot out the gate below the man. Activate the switch. The man will
- be wounded by a Morph. Collect the Atomic Charge from him and carry on to
- the left. Kill the Morph.
-
- Pick up the Diary and read it.
-
- Activate the elevator and take it down. Go to the right, kill the Morph,
- then run and jump to the ledge on your right. Take the elevator down. Kill
- the Morph. Go down past the colorful long-tailed and fast-moving creature.
- (You can kill this guy, but don't have to!)
-
- At the bottom, go left. Pick up a Stone. Continue left and up, through the
- upper gate. Then go down and right through the lower gate. Kill the Morph.
- Get the key. Stand under the green light and you will Teleport to the
- platform above. Return to the colorful creature. Wait for the right moment
- and climb up past it. Climb on up to the elevator and take it back up. Go
- right until you reach a locked gate. Use the key to open it.

- LEVEL 7 (Code: RENDER)
-
- Go right as far as you can. You will have to stop by a locked gate behind
- which is the entrance to a space ship. Remember this location.
-
- Return to the left and take the elevator, near the save pillar, up. Kill
- the Morph, then climb up on the left. Keep climbing, and then go right
- until you reach an elevator above a locked gate. Go up on the elevator.
- Don't touch the switches at the top, or you will cause the elevator to go
- down and you will get stuck here. Climb up, and dodging the automatic
- cannon (see alternative below), go left and down to the switch. Kill the
- Morph and operate the switch. Return to the elevator under the automatic
- cannon, and go down. (Alternatively, activate the switch to send the
- elevator down. This turns off the cannon. Continue as stated above and then
- return to elevator shaft. As the elevator has returned to the bottom, you
- have to carefully climb down the elevator shaft.) The gate at the bottom is
- now open. Go toward it, kill the Morph, pick up the key and open the lock.
- (You may have to try a different key in your inventory to unlock the gate.)
- Climb up to the elevator and go up on it. Climb up. _Stop!_ Take only one
- step past the save pillar. Watch the Disintegrator Zones carefully. You can
- get past them if you wait until each has gone off, then walk to the next
- one, wait, until you are past all three.

- Take the elevator down. Open the lock with the key. Throw the Teleport
- Receiver down the chasm, and activate the Teleport. Pick up the Teleport
- Receiver, kill the Morph and kill the auxiliary brain. Throw the Teleport
- Receiver down the chasm, and activate the Teleport. Pick up the Teleport
- Receiver. Go right and leave the Teleport Receiver by the locked gate next
- to the space ship. Go left until you can go no further except by taking the
- elevator down...down...down...

- Hope you enjoyed the ride! You are now near the planet core. Go right to
- the master brain. Kill two Morphs, then climb up to first platform on left
- and shoot the brain. Then kill another two Morphs, climb up on first
- platform on right and shoot the brain. Repeat this sequence until the brain
- is dead and no more Morphs are produced.

- Go right and operate the switch to bring the elevator down. Take the
- elevator up. Go right and down. Then go up and pick up the Exploding Mouse.
- Kill the Morph. Pick up the key and use the key in the lock. Take the
- elevator on the left down. Go right and kill the two Morphs. Now perform a
- running jump over the Disintegrator Zone and leave the Atomic Charge on the
- far right. Now operate the switch. If you want to make a dramatic exit,
- race back to the space ship the long way. Otherwise Teleport! Go to the far
- right and take the elevator up into the space ship.

- ENDGAME

- Conrad is safe, and has told his story, but he is in an uncharted galaxy
- far from humankind. He lays down in his cryogenic chamber expecting to be
- drifting in space for a very long time...
