  760.                                     decreasing the MTU size
  761.                         Long desc:  [Archiver's note: I was under the
  762.                                     impression that, like in most OSes (Win9x
  763.                                     aside), OS/2's various TCP/IP negotiation
  764.                                     programs, including ppp.exe which this
  765.                                     would most likely affect, allowed the user
  766.                                     to change the MTU size as he or she sees
  767.                                     fit.  I know that ppp.exe takes mtu as a
  768.                                     commandline parameter, at least, though
  769.                                     the comment in the .cmd file indicates
  770.                                     otherwise.  In the meantime, to answer the
  771.                                     question posed in the text of the .cmd
  772.                                     file, the MTU specifies the largest sized
  773.                                     packet which the dialup server will send
  774.                                     your machine at a time.  A smaller MTU
  775.                                     doesn't increase the amount of bandwidth
  776.                                     available (it actually decreases it
  777.                                     slightly), it only decreases the average
  778.                                     latency which applies to multiple open TCP
  779.                                     connections and so web browsing *seems* to
  780.                                     go faster, since files can be downloaded
  781.                                     more in parallel.  It's akin to how in
  782.                                     most cases multitasking operating systems
  783.                                     don't really run multiple programs
  784.                                     simultaneously, it only switches between
  785.                                     several running programs really quickly to
  786.                                     give the effect that they're all running
  787.                                     at the same time.  A smaller MTU, in
  788.                                     effect, increases the speed at which the
  789.                                     TCP/IP stack switches between connections.
  790.                                     An MTU of 1500 is acceptable on a 10mbps
  791.                                     connection because that's only about 1.2
  792.                                     milliseconds per switch, but on a 28k8
  793.                                     dialup connection it's a more-noticeable
  794.                                     420 milliseconds.  An MTU of 576 (which is
  795.                                     an arbitrary value, really) means each
  796.                                     switch takes only 160 milliseconds on the
  797.                                     same connection, which is about the same
  798.                                     rate at which most OSes switch between
  799.                                     programs.  I hope this explanation is
  800.                                     helpful, even if it's in the wrong place
