  18.    INTRODUCTION
  19.  
  20.       This file describes the features specific to the OS/2 port. It is
  21.       suggested that you read the general README file prior to this one.

  24.    SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  25.  
  26.    16-bit version:
  27.  
  28.       *  OS/2 version 1.2 or higher, or Windows NT v 3.10 or higher.
  29.    For OS/2 systems:
  30.       *  A 80286 or higher CPU.
  31.       *  512K of free memory
  32.    For Windows NT systems:
  33.       *  1024K of free memory
  34.  
  35.    32-bit version:
  36.  
  37.       *  OS/2 version 3.0 with Fixpak 25 or higher
  38.       *  A 80386SX or higher CPU.
  39.       *  1024K of free memory (512K for each subsequent  instance after
  40.          the first one has been started)
  41.       *  IBM LIBC and Unicode runtime  support (installed by default as
  42.          a mandatory component)

  45.    IMPLEMENTATION ISSUES
  46.  
  47.       *  External garble modules are provided as OS/2 DLLs. You may not
  48.          use DOS  modules  with  ARJ/2, or vice  versa. The  encryption
  49.          algorithm  is  the  same, so  ARJ/2 garbled  archives can   be
  50.          processed under DOS.
  51.  
  52.       *  ARJ/2  sets  the  "Host OS" to  "OS/2"  on its  archives. When
  53.          extracting  any such  archive with ARJ  for DOS,  some unusual
  54.          behavior  may  occur. Versions  of ARJ  prior to 2.50  convert
  55.          high-ASCII  characters in  filenames to  7-bit  characters  by
  56.          ignoring the  high  bit. So, the  filename  "▒TEST▒"  will  be
  57.          converted to "1TEST1" on extraction.
  58.  
  59.          ARJ/DOS also strips high  bit from  archive comments, but only
  60.          if the archive  was created  by ARJ/2. Archives  created  with
  61.          ARJ/DOS  and  then  processed   under OS/2  are not  affected.
  62.  
  63.          Beginning  with version  2.72, ARJ/DOS considers  the ARJSFXJR
  64.          archives created  under OS/2 to be hostile  to the DOS version
  65.          of ARJSFXJR and  therefore cannot  modify them. In such cases,
  66.          it's advised to use the "-2d" switch under OS/2.
  67.  
  68.       *  ARJ/2 uses the  default OS/2 error  handler that will normally
  69.          display  pop-up menus  prompting  for action.  The  -&  option
  70.          installs batch error and  exception handler (new feature since
  71.          ARJ/2 v 2.62.08). Remember  that the  ampersand  character  is
  72.          used  in OS/2 to start  two  processes  consequently, so  this
  73.          switch will actually split  the command line. Type -^& instead
  74.          of -& to install the error handler.
  75.  
  76.       *  ARJSFXJR  archives will  display  ANSI sequences  if the  ANSI
  77.          support is enabled  in the  current OS/2 session (it's enabled
  78.          by default in OS/2).
  79.  
  80.       *  By default, ARJ/2 stores extended attributes among with files.
  81.          To  disable  EA  storage  and thus revert  to  the traditional
  82.          header format, use  the "-2e" option. See  a special dedicated
  83.          section in the main README file for details on EA handling.
  84.  
  85.       *  "-2p<n>:<d>" can be used to adjust the  priority of ARJ/2. The
  86.          knowledge  of OS/2 scheduling system  is required to  use this
  87.          option. It can dramatically increase performance but slow down
  88.          other processes. The <n> can be equal to 1, 2, 3 or 4:
  89.  
  90.           1 = idle-time priority
  91.           2 = regular priority
  92.           3 = time-critical priority
  93.           4 = fixed-high priority
  94.  
  95.          Priority delta values can be given in <d> (defaults to 0). The
  96.          range  for <d> is -31 to 31.  So, "-2p2"  corresponds  to  the
  97.          regular  process  priority, and "-2p3:31"  gives  the  maximum
  98.          time-critical priority.
  99.  
  100.       *  ARJSFXJR does  not  support  long filenames  under Win95  DOS.
  101.          ARJSFXJR in ARJ/2 supports OS/2 long filenames.

  104.    KNOWN PROBLEMS
  105.  
  106.       *  On FAT volumes under Windows NT, both long filenames and short
  107.          filenames may be used to specify a filename. If you refer to a
  108.          file  with its  short name (e.g. "ARJ a lntest LONGFI~1.TXT"),
  109.          the short filename will be stored as entered from console. So,
  110.          no LFN equivalent is placed  into the  archive, and if  a file
  111.          with a  similar long  filename exists in the  archive, it will
  112.          not be replaced.
  113.  
  114.       *  REARJ/2 may  behave incorrectly  if  the  command  interpreter
  115.          (specified   with  COMSPEC=   environment  variable)  is   not
  116.          compatible with CMD.EXE. It's also unwise to  rename REARJ.EXE
  117.          since  it  calls itself recursively  when  converting archives
  118.          within archives (/a).
  119.  
  120.       *  No LIBC is supplied with fixes prior to XR_W032. For use  with
  121.          32-bit ARJ/2, the  LIBCS.DLL, LIBUNI.DLL and UCONV.DLL  may be
  122.          obtained in the OS/2 v 4.00 release (9.023). XR_W032 and later
  123.          CSDs do not require any special action.
