  1. Late Release Notes for XFree86/OS2 3.3
  2. (last updated: 3 Jun 97)

  4. This file contains latest information that did not make it into
  5. the documentation by the time the version 3.3 was finalized.
  6.  
  7. - Read the XOS2FAQ.HTM file which comes with this distribution.
  8.   This file is HTML code and is best read with a Web reader, e.g. explore
  9.   or netscape. It is located in the \XFree86\lib\X11\doc directory.
  10.  
  11. - I have once promised that "the next XFree86" version will be "completely
  12.   different" to current versions. Well, this referred to the version 4.0
  13.   which had to be deferred because of the approaching expiry date for 3.2A.
  14.   I have already had a working pre-4.0 alpha version, so these big changes
  15.   promised are not vaporware. As soon as 3.3 is out of the door, we'll
  16.   continue on this codebase.

  18. - A problem has been found shortly before the finalization of XFree86-3.3
  19.   with Matrox Millenium boards. If you have such a board, AND have installed
  20.   the OS/2 Matrox driver 2.11, the X server will fail to probe the
  21.   card correctly, and will fail entirely then. In this case, go through
  22.   the standard xf86config dialogue and select a Millenium as usual, but then
  23.   edit the resulting XConfig file with an editor and add the following
  24.   line in the "ServerFlags" section:
  25.     PCIProbe2
  26.   This should fix the problem, and the server will work again. Alternatively,
  27.   you can also return to previous (2.04 or older) drivers; however, I have
  28.   been told that the 2.11 drivers behave better concerning switches between
  29.   PM and X.

  31. - There has been rumor that "the next version" will contain OpenGL support.
  32.   While there might be some XFree86 servers for some platforms which can
  33.   load a special OpenGL runtime module, the XFree86/OS2 servers won't. "The
  34.   next version" again refers to XFree86-4.0, which will deal with such
  35.   a runtime module.

  37. - Xprt, Xnest, and Xvfb are broken in this version, and are not in the
  38.   distribution (XF33prt.zip, XF33nest.zip, XF33vfb.zip) even if some other
  39.   docs claim the converse. These three programs are not too interesting
  40.   anyway, IMHO.

  42. - I've got several reports that FP26 caused problems with XFree86 in 3.2 and
  43.   3.2A (server won't start up, even when no other configuration problem
  44.   exists, or crash intermittingly). Unfortunately, I can't reproduce the
  45.   effect, but you should be warned if you use Warp 3 with FP26. Going back
  46.   to an earlier FP (e.g. 17 or 22) or upgrading to Warp 4 has been reported
  47.   to cure the problem.

  49. - XF86SUP.SYS hasn't been changed since 3.2A, so if you upgrade from the 3.2A
  50.   version, you don't need a reboot.
  51.  
  52. - If you have a RageII+ card (not a normal Mach64 264GT), the following
  53.   might work for you. Add the following lines to the

  60. - As always, there is some goodie hidden in the distributed xinitrc.cmd file
  61.   which is not in the standard XFree86-non-OS/2 distribution.

  63. - Reporting bugs:

  65.   There is the official XFree86/OS2 bugs page <http://set.gmd.de/~veit/os2/xf86bugs.html> 
  66.   which is updated when new bugs are found (maybe even together with
  67.   a workaround). Please consult this page before reporting a bug.

  69.   Read the FAQ and ALL OTHER DOCUMENTS that are available before claiming
  70.   something is a bug.

  72.   Older versions, such as 3.2 and 3.2A are no longer supported, once 
  73.   XFree86-3.3 is available. I won't react to bug reports that refer
  74.   to old code (unless you find out that XYZZY worked with an old version
  75.   of XFree86, and now no longer does).

  79. - Commercial users: there is no warranty, nor do you have any title 
  80.   on getting an immediate fix. Read the file COPYRIGHT for details.

  82. - If you would like to write an article in a newspaper or magazine about this
  83.   system, please feel free to do this (but understand: you get what you
  84.   have paid for - it is usually considered as bad style to bash on software
  85.   which you get for free).
