  1. Hello! You have found the latest version 3.2 of XFree86/OS2.

  4. This version is the PUBLIC RELEASE of XFree86/OS2. It does not have
  5. any expiry date imposed, so it may may be used in production environments
  6. without limitation. There is also now the full source code available.

  8. This also means, though, that the past alpha and beta versions, even if they
  9. still function, are no longer supported, and bug reports to anything else
  10. than XFree86/OS2-3.2 will no longer accepted. Please update to the
  11. public version, and check if the bug you think you have found is still
  12. present there.

  16. This file is a condensed version of the file README.OS2 to be found in
  17. somewhere else here.
  18.  
  19. The purpose of this file is to give you a SHOPPING LIST of things you
  20. should obtain. The whole distribution in this directory is about 50 MB 
  21. archived, but you by far won't need everything. The following list describes 
  22. what the files contain and what you must have (marked REQUIRED) and what you 
  23. might get as well (marked OPTIONAL). Save net bandwidth and your money and do 
  24. not overload the FTP servers with things you hardly ever need - don't do an
  25. uncritical MGET.

  27. Note for users of a previous alpha or beta version:

  30. It is generally not recommended to copy a public version over a beta 
  31. version, although it might work in many cases. If you want to do this, 
  32. please ensure to install at least the following archives:
  33.     XF32base.zip
  34.     XF32bin.zip
  35.     and the appropriate X server archive.

  37. How to install:
  38. ---------------
  39.  
  40. Before ANYTHING ELSE, get the following files:
  41.  
  42.     XF32base.zip    (REQUIRED)
  43.     EMXRT.ZIP    (REQUIRED, this contains emx09c patch level 1 or later,
  44.                        not needed if you already have it installed)
  45.  
  46. The XF32base file contains a test program for your video card. If this
  47. fails or reports a non-supported video card *which is VGA compatible*, it is 
  48. usually only possible to run the VGA16 X server with a lousy 640x480x16
  49. resolution, which might not be what you really want. In some cases, the
  50. SuperProbe program might erroneously detect a wrong video card. *In this
  51. case*, please read the accompanying file \XFree86\lib\X11\doc\README if
  52. your hardware is supported despite of the possible misdetection. If this
  53. file does not mention it (or specifically says it is unsupported), game is
  54. over for you.

  56. If the test was okay *or you really know what you are doing* (most people
  57. don't), select among the following archives:

  69. Note every server comes in two flavors: the full-featured server containing
  70. PEX, XI, XIE support, and a smaller server without these special support.
  71. You probably want to have a small server.
  72. The full-featured servers are called 'XF32*.ZIP', the small servers are
  73. 'S32*.ZIP'.
