  3. Readme file for NotePager Net version 2.0

  8. Overview:
  9.  
  10. NotePager Net is a network Paging application.  It allows an unlimited number
  11. of workstations on a network to send messages to the NotePager Net paging
  12. server, which in turn sends the messages (via a modem or a direct cable
  13. connection) to your paging carrier(s) for delivery.  Your paging carrier will
  14. then send the message to the appropriate pager, phone, or paging device.  The
  15. NotePager Net GUI client application is one of several front-end interfaces
  16. available for the PageGate paging server.  It can be used alone, or in
  17. conjunction with any or all of the other interfaces.

  19. There are two separate components to the NotePager Net paging application:
  20. a server application, and a client application.  From here forward, the
  21. client portion will be referred to as NotePager Net, and the server portion
  22. will be referred to as PageGate.  Both NotePager Net and PageGate must be
  23. installed, setup, and running for messages to be successfully sent to a pager.

  26. on the capabilities and operation of NotePager Net and PageGate.

  29. Shareware Information:
  30.  
  31. NotePager Net defaults into a 'shareware mode' until it is registered
  32. (purchased).  Registration information can be entered into PageGate's Admin
  33. program by choosing the 'Register' menuitem from the 'Help' menu.  Both the
  34. NotePager Net client and the PageGate server application are registered there.
  35. The shareware version only allows NotePager Net to display the first five
  36. users in PageGate's user database.  In addition, the PageGate paging server
  37. application will only allow for the setup of two users, and will stop itself
  38. every 3-5 days.  PageGate's admin program must be used to restart the paging
  39. engine after this time period.

  44. NotePager Net and PageGate can be used with any network operating system 
  45. that supports Windows95, Windows98, Windows NT workstation, or Windows NT
  46. server computers as nodes.

  48.   PageGate (server) minimum requirements:
  49.     Pentium processor
  50.     Windows95/98:
  51.         16 Meg RAM minimum (32 recommended)
  52.     Windows NT server/workstation
  53.         32 Meg RAM minimum (48 recommended)
  54.     50 Meg free hard disk space (more for larger databases)
  55.     300 baud modem minimum or a direct cable connection to a 
  56.     paging terminal

  60.     486 DX2-66 processor (Pentium processor recommended)
  61.     Windows95/98:
  62.         16 Meg RAM minimum
  63.     Windows NT workstation/server

  72. If you have downloaded NotePager Net in a single file (npnetv2.exe or
  73. npnetv2.zip), use these instructions.  If you have a NotePager Net CD-Rom,
  74. see 'CD-Rom Installation Instructions'.

  76. If you have downloaded the executable install file (npnetv2.exe), skip to
  77. step #4.
  78.  
  79. If you have downloaded the zipped install file (npnetv2.zip), start with
  80. step #1.
  81.  
  82. 1)  Copy the downloaded file (npnetv2.zip) to a temporary directory (i.e.
  83.     c:\temp or c:\windows\temp)
  84.  
  85. 2)  Use an unzip utility such as WinZip or PKunzip to decompress the file.
  86.  
  87. 3)  The executable installation program will be extracted (npnetv2.exe)
  88.  
  89. 4)  Execute (run) the NotePager Net installation program (npnetv2.exe)
  90.  
  91. 5)  You will be presented with the 'WinZip Self-Extractor [NPNETV.EXE]'
  92.     window.  Click on the 'Setup' button.  Some temporary files will be
  93.     decompressed.
  94.  
  95. 6)  NotePager Net's installation 'Welcome' screen will be displayed. Click
  96.     the 'OK' button to continue.
  97.  
  98. 7)  The application installation choice screen will be displayed. Choose
  99.     'Server Install' to install PageGate (NotePager Net's paging server
  100.     application).  Or, choose 'Workstation Install' to install the NotePager
  101.     Net client program on this workstation.
  102.  
  103. 8)  The next screen will allow you to change the default installation
  104.     directory by clicking on the 'Change Directory' button.  When you are
  105.     satisfied with the installation directory, click on the large button
  106.     with the installation graphic on it.  This will copy the program files
  107.     to your computer and make all necessary system changes to run
  108.     NotePager Net.
  109.  
  110. 9)  The setup completion screen will appear, indicating a successful install.
  111.     Click on the 'OK' button to exit the installation program.
  112.  
  113. 10) NotePager Net's workstation or server installation is now complete.
  114.     Please note that the PageGate server application must be installed,
  115.     setup, and running before the NotePager Net client application can be
  116.     used.

  119. CD-ROM Installation Instructions:
  120.  
  121. If you have a NotePager Net CD-Rom, use these instructions.  If you have 
  122. downloaded NotePager Net in a single file (npnetv2.exe or npnetv2.zip), see
  123. 'Download File Installation Instructions'.
  124.  
  125. 1)  On most systems, the installation program will automatically start after
  126.     the Cd-Rom is inserted into the drive.  If the installation program
  127.     doesn't start, run the setup.exe program on the CD-Rom.

  129. 2)  NotePager Net's installation 'Welcome' screen will be displayed. Click
  130.     the 'OK' button to continue.
  131.  
  132. 3)  The application installation choice screen will be displayed. Choose
  133.     'Server Install' to install PageGate (NotePager Net's paging server
  134.     application).  Or, choose 'Workstation Install' to install the NotePager
  135.     Net client program on this workstation.
