<title>C-Kermit 6.0 - UNIX Binaries</title>
</head><body><h3>
C-Kermit 6.0 - UNIX Binaries</b></h3>
<b>As of:</b> 10 September 1998
<p>
<a href="#list"><b>GO STRAIGHT TO FILE LIST</b></a>
<p>
This is an attempt at providing a guide to the UNIX C-Kermit binary
executables. Remember, it is <i>always</i> better to
<a href="ftp://kermit.columbia.edu/kermit/archives/cku192src.tar.Z">
build your own copy from source code</a> than to try to run a binary that was
built on a different computer, especially if your UNIX version or release or
configuration are different. Even when they are the same, there is often a
mixup with shared (or even static) libraries, resulting in a refusal to load
or run. The binaries on this server are provided mainly for those who do not
have C compilers and development systems that allow them to build C-Kermit
from the source code.
<ul>
<li>This file might not be totally up to date or accurate, in which case
you should go have a look at the
<a href="ftp://kermit.columbia.edu/kermit/bin/">FTP site</a> directly,
after reading the <a href="#names">file naming conventions</a> just below.
</ul>
<p>
<b>Remember:</b>
<ul>
<li>To transfer all binary files in <b>binary mode</b>.
<li>To also get the accompanying <a href="ck60text.html"><b>text files</b></a>.
<li>To <a href="ckborder.html">order the manual</a> if you have not already
done so.
</ul>
<p>
<hr>
<b><a name="names">FILE NAMING CONVENTIONS</a></b>
<p>
UNIX binaries have names like:
<pre>
ckuker.<i>name</i>
</pre>
where <i>name</i> is the name of the UNIX C-Kermit makefile entry,
such as "ckuker.du40" (Digital Unix 4.0) or "ckuker.bebox"; or:
<pre>
ckuker.<i>name-osversion</i>
</pre>
where "osversion" denotes the operating system version, in case
it makes a difference, e.g. "ckuker.hpux100o-10.00" versus
"ckuker.hpux100o-10.10"; or:
<pre>
ckuker.<i>name-hardwaretype</i>
</pre>
where the same makefile entry can be used on different hardware
platforms such as i386 (Intel), sparc, powerpc, mips, etc; or:
<pre>
ckuker.<i>name-osversion-hardwaretype</i>
</pre>
<p>
<hr>
<b><a name="list">FILE LIST</a></b>
<p>
Some of these files are a bit dated but they are the newest ones
we have available for each platform. The C-Kermit version number is shown in
the right-hand column. If you can replace an obsolete binary with an
up-to-date one, or furnish binaries that are
not listed here, please <a href="mailto:kermit@columbia.edu">contact us</a>.
<p>
"6.0.192_RC1" means Release Candidate 1 of version 6.0.192, which is
substantially identical with 6.0.192 except for the herald and version text.
"6.0.192_Beta" indicates a Beta version of 6.0.192 which most likely has
bugs that were corrected in the final release. Any versions prior to 5A(188)
are development copies from the C-Kermit 5A development period.
<p>
After obtaining the desired file, rename (mv) it to "wermit" and then
read the ckuins.doc file (among the <a href="ck60text.html">text files</a>),
which suggests some tests. If it seems to work OK, follow the directions in
that file for installing it on your system.
<p>
<b>NOTE:</b> UNIX binaries have no conventional filetype, such as EXE, so
your Web browser might need some helpful hints about what to do with these
files. For example, when using Netscape and you click on one of these files
and its contents appears in your browser window, you'll need to Right-Click
on the file instead, and then choose "Save this link as..." in the little
popup menu.
If your Web browser can't be convinced to download the desired file in binary
mode to your disk, just capture the URL from your browser's "mouse echo area"
(or from "view source") and then use ftp in binary mode to GET the file the
Old Fashioned Way.
